arsenal_fan
I laugh at the idea that young drivers are more dangerous. Every time you see a car drive through a building or going the wrong way on the freeway, who's driving? An old lady. I lol'd because this is so true! I hate the sexism about the woman drivers too, I mean my gran is such as sexist, prejudice you name it. When she drives she either balmes it on a young person, a woman or a different race, i really try to help her their and correct her, i mean she even calls afro-britanians coloured people, gettin' old i think. I find old drivers much more dangerous than young people yet young people get criticised more. One time this old lady drove through a yellow light and it turned red when she was in the middle so she stopped rather than just driving on. You could see everyone in their cars looking at each other like 'Why the f*ck didn't she just go through'. Then this car came along and obviously didn't see her car in the middle of the intersection and swerved to avoid her and then crashed into a pole. Everyone got out of their cars and rushed to the car and it was a guy and his girlfriend, they had pretty bad cuts and the girl broke her hand but they were okay. The next thing I couldn't believe though was when the light went green, the old lady drove off, even though she was responsible for the car crash and everyone was yelling for her to come back. Thankfully someone got her plate number down, I've never seen someone so oblivous to what is happening around them, I rekon someone high on drugs would have known what they had done. epoxi
Much to my annoyance when I buy insurance, young drivers are statistically much more dangerous. From school, I know one kid who wrote off his Rover hitting a lamp post, one who wrote off his Clio rolling it upside down, one who wrote off his brand new Polo and the brand new Mercedes he crashed into because he didn't give way, another who crashed his Fiesta into a fence, another who wrote off a Ka, one who went joyriding 100mph in a residential area in his mum's C-Class (but surprisingly nothing happened ) and one who crashed a Merc CL500 into a wall (I think that went to the scrapyard too). I don't personally know any senile old drivers. Plus, old people generally get involved in low-speed collisions: thus are more likely to just damage the cars as opposed to the people. Damaging cars runs into the £1,000s...damage people and the claims can easily go into the millions. Edited October 31, 2010 by epoxi
Tsar_Smirnoff
I got to experience first hand how horrible motorists are around here. About 4 weeks ago, I was going through a 4-way stop sign on my motorcycle. I was almost through the intersection when a young high school aged girl ran through the stop sign and slammed into my back shock/tire. Of course I high-sided and flew off the bike where I broke my left wrist, sprained the right, damaged my right knee ligaments, and got some pretty nasty road rash. The worst part is that she f*cking drove off afterwords! I could have been f*cking killed, and she would have just continued on to class.....luckily a train stopped her. Apparently, hit-and-runs are very common around this place. Also, tractor trailer drivers are just colossal assholes. No matter how much room they have to get in the left lane, they simply refuse to budge when you're trying to merge over onto the interstate. It was no ones fault though because the suspension on that truck broke on one side causing him to turn uncontrollably.
dice
My country just accepted some stupid law for young drivers needing to take courses about safety on the road and redoing them in a period of one year. They charge everything 200€ plus 4 additional hours of driving (~90€) with your instructor, so he can sign that piece of paper which grants you rights to do the second part of the course, where you drive 4 laps around a track filled with cones and voila, you're a 'safe' driver. Considering that you spend around 1000€ to get a drivers license here and now need to pay an additional 300€ for proving you're a safe driver, is imo total bull. I mean, you can pass that test with A grades and then continue getting your adrenaline on the road. The whole system needs to wastly improve, the most effective method would probably be a series of phsicological and/or physical tests which would determine your driving capabilities. There's a somewhat similar scheme called Pass Plus here in the UK. Once you've got your licence (typically a few hundred pounds after lessons and tests) you can do the PP course with your instructor where you do stuff not covered in the main test like motorway driving and other such things. I think it takes about 4-6 hours total and costs about £70. This is all done with your instructor as your assessor as well though, so you are guaranteed to pass unless your instructors an arsehole. To be honest though, it doesn't make too much of a difference to your insurance, maybe £100 at most. I didn't bother myself.
JakeTheHuman
Young drivers do not always equal bad drivers, for example, I'm 15. I got my learners 3 weeks ago, and I can only drive on Saturdays, so I have only driven twice. I have to drive a Stick, and my first time driving, I got used to the car, used to its turning radius, when to shift, its acceleration, things like that. Saturday, my second day driving, I drove ~100 miles, with an average speed of 50. I drove on the interstate, a highway, to 4 local towns, parked in numerous parking lots, went through many red lights/stop signed intersections, and only stalled once when I was on a back road and let the clutch out a little too fast. Now I did happen to come across someone who happened to be a bad driver or had road rage. I was exiting a Publix parking lot on a road that intersected a main road. I was waiting for a break in traffic, I could see clearly the traffic passing in front of me, but the flow of traffic I was trying to get into came from up-hill, so I had to be careful about when I went. So a person pulls up behind me, and we sit there for maybe 30 seconds, and there is a break in the traffic in the lane I had to cross, well I didn't take it and the guy behind me immediately honked his horn at me, and guess what? A car came up over the hill, so if I would have went I would have been rear-ended at 45 MPH. Shows how good some "veteran drivers" are at making decisions... Also, it's a pitty you guys don't live in the US, our biggest fee is $10 to get the initial license, you have to take a road test to get your license but you don't have to have drivers ed, which is free in High School by the way, to get your license at 17, you do if you want to get it at 16 though. agent17
Z0MBIEStheyN0MBIES, fees to get your permit very greatly from state to state. Here in upstate New York I believe it cost me $75, although that was quite a few years ago, the fees could have changed by now. The cost of taking drivers ed also differs from school to school. It cost me $50 to take the class over the summer, but if you pass the class you get your $50 back. So it is basically free, unless of course you somehow fail. In New York state you also have the option to take a 5-hour course or Drivers Ed in order to be eligible for your license. I would advise taking the latter of the options, Drivers Ed is an invaluable experience, it is one of the best ways to get driving experience. If you are serious about becoming a safe driver, then Drivers Ed is the way to go.
OysterBarron
well in the first place if someone was right up my arse and driving dangerously switching his high beam on and off i would slow down to about 15 miles an hour to ensure a safer stopping distance for the car behind! and let them over take! If they dont overtake and are just targeting you in some sort of road rage then keep them interested and ring the police while your driving in order for them to dispatch a unit and intercept you! with both you and your girlfriends statments he wouldnt be able to drive a car for long! well thats my answer anyway if they really want to be knobs and tailgate you then i would prefere to do it at a safe speed rather than edging my speed up just cuz theres an inconsiderate c*nt behind me! *MURDOC*
They just got this 84 year old lady on video doing 50mph on the wrong side of the highway around here. Also, its not really a crazy driver but some guy in a Benz got his car egged and jumped out and fired 10 shots, 2 hit a 17 year old in the neck and leg or something, and he died on the way to the hospital. That last ones right out the newspaper.
nlitement
There's some gay ass homo fa**ot not far from here who the SECOND DAY in a row is f*cking around, already. Same car, same guy, checked the license plate and found out his name. Cuts me in a turn today, then does 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, and yesterday when I changed lanes left (for a purpose, unlike that cock sh*t with his little Mercedes-Benz A 170), he took the right lane and accelerated to 70 km/h (50 km/h zone once again) when the lights just changed to red 200 m in front of him. Then he stopped. Wow, so impressive, dipsh*t. He should have a bomb planted in his car.

nlitement
Haha, sorry. You see though had it been just one of the two events, I would have shrugged it off. People make all kinds of mistakes in traffic. But this was the same guy on the same road two times in a row. I was thinking of calling the cops but then I didn't bother. His kind of idiots who think they're Sierra Hotel with their hot hatches are probably the 2nd leading cause of completely unnecessary auto accidents, after drunk drivers. I'm pretty sure he drives like this every time.
epoxi
People make all kinds of mistakes in traffic. I agree, I see lots of people getting angry in their cars because someone does something wrong, but I appreciate that everyone is in a rush sometimes, everyone makes mistakes sometimes. When I make mistakes, I don't want people to criticise me, so I don't criticise others. But yeah, if they do it twice...it's no holds barred. Blades
I haven't experienced any terrific car experience from such a kind, but you reminded me by the famous 1971 movie "Duel". Good film. Worst I've had is some bell-end in a Nissan 200SX pulled out onto a roundabout in front of me, so I leaned on the horn for a good few seconds at him. He just holds his hand up out the window and gives me the fingers. Further down the road he pulls over to the right to turn off and as I go past he gives me the fingers again, so I did the same back to him. Nothing happened after that. He was wearing a truly awful woolly hat too.
