Mr.Mister
http://www.limewire.com/ A federal judge has issued an injunction against LimeWire that essentially puts the music file-sharing site out of business, five months after it lost a copyright-infringement suit filed by the record industry. U.S. district judge Kimba Wood in New York issued the permanent injunction Tuesday, ordering LimeWire to disable the "searching, downloading, uploading, file trading, and/or file distribution functionality" of the software it distributed to users to access and share files through the peer-to-peer service. In addition, the judge said in the 17-page ruling that LimeWire must notify its workers, investors, and customers of the injunction. Wood also ordered the site to file a progress report in meeting all conditions of the order within 14 days. The injunction essentially shut down the site, which on Tuesday posted on its homepage a legal notice saying that it had been ordered to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing application. "Downloading or sharing copyrighted content without authorization is illegal," the post warned. In a statement, LimeWire called the decision a "sad occasion." "Naturally, we're disappointed with this turn of events," chief executive George Searle said in a statement. However, Searle said the injunction only applied to the company's file-sharing product and said, "Our company remains open for business." However, what it would do was not clear. Searle said the company remained "deeply committed" to working with the music industry and was working on a new music service. In a statement obtained by The New York Times, the Recording Industry Association of America, which represented the 13 record companies that sued the site, said the injunction "will start to unwind the massive piracy machine that LimeWire and (founder and chairman Mark) Gorton used to enrich themselves immensely." While the injunction closed down the site, it did not put an end to the case. Both sides will appear before Wood in January to begin arguments on how much LimeWire and Gorton should pay in damages, according to the RIAA statement. LimeWire now joins other high-profile file-sharing sites, namely Grokster and Napster, in being shut down through a lawsuit filed by entertainment companies. LimeWire, launched in 2000, was one of the largest remaining commercial peer-to-peer services left on the web. The company claimed to have more than 50 million monthly users downloading 3 billion songs a month, according to the court. Wood in May ruled that LimeWire was liable for the use of its software to illegally download copyrighted music. In issuing the ruling, the judge referred to the Grokster case in which the Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that the file-sharing service was liable when customers used it to swap songs and movies illegally. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit filed by MGM Studios. The record companies that sued Lime Wire included Arista, Atlantic, BMG Music, Capital, Elektra, Interscope, LaFace, Motown, Priority, Sony BMG, UMG, Virgin, and Warner Brothers. So with Limewire gone, what file share program would you guys reccommend? Edit: Damn typo

GTA3Freak-2001
Isn't Frostwire a similar thing, either way they all tend to be cease-pools of dodgy material anyway.

M. H. Hunter III
So with Limewire gone, what file share program would you guys reccommend? f*ck file sharing programs. Use torrents. X2, I haven't used a service like Limewire since early 00s, but who still uses these dodgy p2p programs? Like you guys said it's filled to the brim with less then reputable material and makes me just cringe at all the crap a person could get from that. But eventually another huge p2p service will start up for those who refuse to figure out torrents. I used Limewire like twice back in like 05 or some sh*t and that's it, sh*t sucked major man-chodes, such a massive resource hog, not to mention the lack of actual decent, honest content. Skimask101
I stopped using Limewire when I found Soulseek. Was a much better than having to find individual songs on an album I wanted. Don't buy music.
Ryder 556
Limewire was what I used for music, then I found Grooveshark. Then I started using torrents for the one thing I've never used em for, music(mostly never used torrents for music as you depend on seeders and sh*t and sometimes it says it has 10 or so but in actuality it has none). I may just re-download BearShare as that's what I've used before I found out about limewire. But nothing will compare to limewire for music downloads for me. Ten seconds to download a 20 minute song instead of 20 minutes? That's pretty nice huh? Ya. I loved limewire. So deal wit it.

Canofceleri
Stealing music is fine, there's no going back now, it's part of the culture. The industry is only prolonging its suffering, by half-heartedly fighting it and also half-heartedly adapting to it. Musicians make their money from touring and endorsements anyway, so f*ck the record companies. New music will always be made and the musicians who make it will get as rich as their talent or their luck allows.

Fnorg
Yesterday I heard some people talking about downloading music. People talk about "the high quality of iTunes" and how "Limewire really is the best program out there". I want to step in and teach them about torrents and private sites, but then I remembered that would be very, very creepy. Anyway, about time. That software was a piece of sh*t. Ari Gold
but if you must vuze. This. It basically works as a torrent search engine, and ranks results based on popularity and reported cases of faultiness, so it's easy to tell which ones are dead-set viruses, and which ones seem reasonable. Fnorg
Vuze is bloated like hell. Useless Dave
I used Limewire when I was 13 or so and was pissed that I couldn't really get full albums. I WANT MY SKA-PUNK ALBUMS GODDAMMIT But then I switched to Mediafire, Megaupload, and Rapidshare for quick downloads, and Vuze for everything else. But I still buy albums on CD if I download one that just really blows my mind, and I whore music out to everyone I know for promotion.

E.A.B.
I always thought that, while money is important, the 'true' artists will do things for the love of the art. When you start playing a guitar cause you wanna get paid, there's a problem. it isn't supposed to be like a job At least, in my eyes it isn't. I don't know how the industry works. But I hear that artists get, like, 10 cents of every CD purchase. Which is total bull, if true. Anyway, you can't really fight it. It's futile. Utterly futile. This calls for a business model change! Also; situations like this call for 'I wasn't going to buy it to begin with' arguments. cuz its true. I have never, ever bought an album. I really don't care that much about music anyway. I wouldn't have bought it to begin with, but since its there, I got it. I didn't 'f*ck over profits' cause I wasn't going to purchase to begin with. Whatever. I'm getting so much of my music from sites like OCRemix (artists that play with their instruments because they really wanna make something cool) nowadays that it really doesn't affect me. I have 'In my Lifetime VOL. 1' to listen to, but I can't when A MEGAMAN X ARRANGEMENT ALBUM WILL BE COMING OUT SOON Edited October 28, 2010 by E.A.B.
