Voodooman
Patch 5 was almost fine, except shadows turned off at evening and road+grass textures and sorta was "flying" and displaced some shadows, but patch 7 screwed everything as we know from most of subjects around. So, R* toronto, i have one simple question - WHERE THE DAMN PATCH 8 THAT WILL UNDO ALL THE CRAP OF PATCH 7?
mkey82
Patch five also had the pop in drivers and the missing moon thing, non operational clocks and whatnot.
jnzooger
There is barely any problems with Patch 7 as long as you set the settings correctly for your system. If your system can't handle the shadows, then turn them off. That simple.

If your system can't handle the shadows, then turn them off. That simple. I have to disagree with this. Pop-in particularly when flying a helicopter got noticably worse from patch 6 onwards. The trade off is that I think the motion of the vehicle itself (not overall FPS of the game) is now noticably smoother. The pop-in has nothing to do with hardware specs - if you can find Viometrix on here, he has noticed this and he has a ridiculously high end rig. Changing settings and command lines don't make a blind bit of difference. Some people may not have noticed that much if either they don't fly helicopters that much, or their draw distance wasn't maxed out in the first place. My guess is they deliberately limited the maxmimum draw distance to make the motion smoother.

Flying helis is one of my favorite parts of the game, and I have very little to no stuttering while flying with patch 7. (And that's with shadows.) Kyle F
Patch 7 also gives most users who have reinstalled GTA IV crashing issues....and it's f*cking annoying! I call R* about it and they can't even fix the damn problem.... "run the game in safemode and compatibility mode - it will fix the crsahes" = BULLsh*t. Yes, I've tried turning them all off and on, it makes no difference. I tend to turn night shadows off though just because I get better performance, but that doesn't appear to be critical. Command lines don't help either. It's not actually stuttering that's the problem. The gameplay is nice and smooth for me with Patches 6 & 7. It's objects popping in, where as with patch 5 and before they used to blur smoothly into view from a further distance. It is particularly noticable with the trees and skylights on buildings. Sunrise Driver
Do you care about the MP? If no then reinstall the game and apply the best patch for you. And don't go online with Live or just install XLiveLess.

And don't go online with Live or just install XLiveLess. Unfortunately yes - I completed single player to 100% a long time ago, so spend most of my time on mp. So I have to use the latest patch. It's definitely the way forward though for anyone who just wants to use single player though.
Spider-Vice
non operational clocks and whatnot. That was Patch 2. GTANet | Red Dead Network | black lives matter | stop Asian hate | trans lives = human lives the beginning is moments ago, the end is moments away

I see objects pop in all the time on the 360 versions of GTA IV and Red Dead. I believe it's an issue with the game engine itself not just GTA IV for PC. Instead of making a PC version from scratch they do the easy/cheapest thing and port it over from the 360.
