Strange laggs on highend PC & Laptop

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm having a huge problem with GTA 4. A year ago, I played it almost maxed out on a medicore PC. 2 Months ago I bought a beast PC from alienware, the Area51, with the following stuff inside:

Intel® Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz

6.0 GB RAM

GeForce GTX 260 1.6GB

Windows 7 64bit

Even when I lower everything down, the laggs remain. The laptop (MSI GE700) has the same issue and the following hardware:

Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor (2,53GHz x 2/ up to 2,8GHz)

4.0 GB RAM

ATi Mobility Radeon HD5730 1GB

Windows 7 64bit

As I said, the laggs are kinda crazy. Last time I played GTA 4 on a way weaker PC i had no laggs. Drivers are up to date. Have no idea what's the problem.

@BLKMAG: 60FPS? I LOL'd. More like 30FPS.

I get a solid 50FPS in citys with a comparatively crappy 3.2Ghz Athlon X4 and a 5770.

You either don't know what you're talking about or it's a miracle.

Drazus7, did you plan to overclock that desktop? The laptop is quite weak, you know.

I didn't play around with the desktop. Got it 2 months ago from Dell, didn't change anything with hardware or so.

Yeah the laptop ain;t a beast, but it should run GTA 4 on low details and resolution...

Apparently, its not the PC but the game itself, GTA 4 Benchmark test 1920:1080 resolution, everything on HIGH = ~46fps.

I can;t figgure it out... and it's not like u play smooth and sudenly it laggs. its 24/7, unplayable.

res: 1280x1024

all settings high, shadows high, night shadows off.

vsync on

antiscopic filtering is admittedly on the lowest setting, but doesn't make much of a difference.

heres a benchmark

Statistics

Average FPS: 62.53

Duration: 37.33 sec

CPU Usage: 62%

System memory usage: 64%

Video memory usage: 63%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1280 x 1024 (75 Hz)

Texture Quality: High

Shadow Quality: Medium

Reflection Resolution: High

Water Quality: High

Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x4

Night Shadows: Off

View Distance: 25

Detail Distance: 31

i'll have to re-do it sometime with my current settings, bet I can get 70+

Heres a youtube vid of me playing:

- hardly any visible lag WITH FRAPs running. Edited by BLKMAG

Then it is a miracle, second time I've seen it happen.

Perhaps GTA 4 favors AMD processors? I don't even have L3 cache.. The i7 is a great CPU, and as GTA 4 is more of a CPU based game I'm suprised people with i7 systems and good graphics cards are getting terrible frames per second :S My CPU cost $100.

Just out of interest, what sort of FPS do you get with your system? The 4870 is similar in terms of performance to the 5770, although your memory might let you down. Your CPU is definitely faster than mine, and with more L2 cache.

Ok, guys, so I have this performance problem now, since I saw this thread:

I have an Asus laptop with Intel Core Duo processor and 3GB Ram, Nividia Geforce Cuda graphics but it doesn't work the same anymore. I used to play the game on low or medium detail getting like 30 fps but now I can only get 12 fps. I installed the latest video drivers. I cleaned my HDD, cleared up some space, defragmented all volumes, installed processor drivers, game patches etc. What should I do to get my 30 fps back? Pls tell me... I have both GTA 4 and GTA 4 EFLC, same problem: game doesn't run that fast anymore, it's laggy and annoying. Sometimes runs fast, but after few seconds is like 8-10 fps. Pls help!

GTA 4 will need all the CPU it can get, open up task manager and go to the processes tab. at the bottom select "Show processes from all users". hit the column up top to sort the list by CPU usage. Anything that is taking up various amounts of CPU usage (windows live messenger, utorrent, firefox) are a few good ones, close them.

if you're not sure what the program is thats taking up CPU (if any) then just post here.

Also with GTA 4 open, set it's priority to "above normal" but not anything higher than that or it may override your mouse/keyboard inputs lol.

*cough* I thought people might solve my problem and not agrue about FPS and other's stuff...

Well sorry, how much VRAM does your card actually have? I know you said 1.6gb, but despite my best Googling efforts I cannot find any evidence that shows a 1.6gb card actually exists, that's an usual size. they are usually 512mb-1gb-1.5gb-2gb

i7 isn't the problem, it should own GTA 4.

Hmm 1.6GB memory could be SLI, do you have two of the cards? each with 896mb memory?

oh damnit how did I miss this "No I dont have the latest patch, will DL and see what happens. "

I'm 90% sure you have TWO graphics cards, the latest patch should address issues with SLI, so both of your cards can be utilized better. Make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers, and get the newest patch. you should be fine after that.

Nah its a single one. As I said, my papers say Nvidia GeForce 260 GTX 1.6 GB. Tool manager shows only one graphic card aswell.

Ok get the newest patch and then try.

I tried that, closed some un-wanted programs, but still low performance. I know that the only way to get back to the 30 fps mode is to do a clean Windows 7 install since last time it worked fine after it, but I have so many programs and settings, I cannot do that anymore. Can someone point me like a system accelerator or such? Or a ram defragmenter, or something...

Can someone tell me what should I close and what settings should I make to gain more performance?

I'm using bartekxyz's Ultimate Graphics Tweak latest version:

Everything is set to low detail, but still looks fine.

Why is your CPU usage a constant 50%??? Sort by CPU, not by name and see whats using the most. Sorry for not responding, got a bit hooked on the new call of duty, lol.
