Mac Gaming

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. As the proud owner of a new macbook, I'm sort of invested in finding new ways to game on my mac. Obviously, Boot Camp will work a charm for games like Fallout New Vegas - but Windows on a macbook is a serious battery drain, and I want to be able to game on the go.

So first of all, I've installed Star Craft, and it plays great at high quality (stutters now and again, but nothing that ruins the experience - and I'm a picky gint) and the coolest discovery for me was that not only is the game sold as a subscription (you can download it and play on any machine you own, as long as you use your battle.net account) but it also stores your saves online for you... so you can pick up the campaign from wherever you were, whenever you want. Actual, functional copy protection. I can dig that.

But then we've got some issues, friends. The playing field on Mac is still quite small. Steam and Valve have recently started porting a lot of games, pointing towards a brighter future - but we've got a long ways to go.

Do any of you mac owners out there play any games? What do you play? What are you looking forward to? This is our dark little corner booth to discuss these things.

I'm going to be an ignorant prick and just say this by rifling quickly through your post and reading hte topic title: get STEAM.

Half Life 2 + Episodes, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead (2) are also playable on Mac now. Most likely future titles will follow...

Don't forget that when Portal 2 comes out it'll be released for Mac at the same time as the other platforms.

Yeah get Steam, there are plenty of games on steam to keep you busy that work for the Mac.

I just saw that Diablo 3 is coming out on Mac - pretty excited about that one. And RAGE, too! Should be interesting.

If you've got nothing to add to the conversation other than "my PC is better," take heart that you're, for the most part, preaching to the choir and kindly f*ck off. wink.gif

You know most gaming PCs like Alienware are way cheaper, work better, have better battery life and have more features than a Mac. Get one it's better value. But if you want more Mac games I hear that Steam is coming and most Apple stores and resellers have Mac games.

Uh, no? On average, alienware's computers are as expensive if not more than a Mac. Though one of the only advantages that a Mac has over an alienware is the OS.

Anyway, the only game I play on my Mac is Quinn, a free, open source tetris. Online scoreboards and even multiplayer challenges are amongst its features.

Well, custom-building my PC saved me a lot of money, as such Pre-Built machines as your cited Alienwares are unjustifiably costly. Now, I'm not saying Apple Macs are cheap, but I will say that there's a certain charm to OSX with which people, such as Otter here, are enamoured, and for that reason, his ownership of a Macintosh makes sense; despite the cost. However, if cost cutting's your plan, custom-building's the only way to go.

Anyway, sorry about the off-topic banter, Otter. I'd heartily recommend Steam as all Valve's Source games have been ported to the Mac. Honestly, Half Life 2, one of the best FPS games ever created, makes Steam worthwhile alone. Try it, mate.

There's also a Mac version of timeless classic CoD4:
