Scissor Doors

Recommended Posts

Are you simply trying rotating the dummy object itself? This may be why it's not working. I think you have to rotate the dummy object's pivot (axis alignment) to achieve what you want. Judging by your model pic, it looks like your pivot is in the default position and this isn't what you want for the scissor door style open/close.

Try this: Select the dummy. Click on the Hierarchy tab. Choose 'Affect Pivot Only'. Select Rotate from the toolbar. Move your mouse to the appropriate viewport and then rotate the pivot in 90 degree increments. Not having done this myself, I can't tell you which axis to rotate to achieve what you want or exact amounts, so you may have to test until you get it right. That or someone else may be able to tell you which one and how much. Kinda hard to figure this out just in my head!

Thanks for your help guys but it's still not working. I tried affecting the pivot as well as the object and the hierarchy only but nothing works. At least I got the doors being in the right position before opening them. But when doing so they switch back to their default position. There has to be a way to switch these two positions to get it to work right :S

Seeing as how changing the pivot axis didn't seem to work for you, I've got another idea. Maybe it's not the dummy pivot that needs rotating... Maybe it's the door's pivot that needs realigning.

Try the following: Select the door in a viewport that has a front/back view of it. Pick 'Affect Pivot Only' from the Hierarchy tab. Choose the Rotate tool then return to the active viewport. Rotate the pivot 90 degrees counterclockwise or clockwise (depending on whether you're in front or back view) so that it ends up with the Z-axis facing the outside of the door and the X-axis pointing down. Then, to make sure the change sticks, goto the Utilities tab and select 'Reset Xform'. Now export the vehicle to .dff format and try it out in-game.

If things are still wonky you may have to either try exporting without using the Reset Xform step or collapsing the stack after applying the modifier or just not applying it at all. It may be enough to only change the pivot alignment but I'm trying to give you all the options to try in one post.

Let us know how it goes... Cross yer fingers! smile.gif

PS: You do know that the door's pivot must be at the same location as its dummy right?

Thanks so much for your help guys.

I've tried everything you said RanxeroX but the doors just won't open the way I want them to.

The problem is that the doors won't open upwards but to the side only. I've got the doors in the right position many times but as I said before the doors open to the side only :S.

Well, that's a real head-scratcher of a problem isn't it?! Judging from your last pics, it looks like messing with the door may not be the answer. Maybe try applying what I last said about the door's pivot to the dummy pivot. Or try doing it to both of them at the same time with and without using the Reset Xform modifier - try without first. If none of these ideas work then I don't know what else to suggest...

Your problem has my curiosity piqued and I even tried importing several vehicles earlier today that I have in my game that use scissor doors but wouldn't you know it... Every one of them is locked and won't import so no luck there. My suggestion to you is to try the same thing as you may have or can get a hold of mods with scissor doors that aren't locked. If you can import one of these vehicles successfully into 3ds-Max then you can see for yourself how they pulled it off. Once in the program, you can look at the door and dummy pivots and see how they're aligned.

If, for whatever reason, you can't import, maybe someone else reading this topic can look at the pivots in 3ds-Max and report back.

I finally found a tutorial helping me out of this. They key is to create a second dummy for each door. This was the last thing I was thinking of. It is now finally working. Take a look at the tutorial over there > http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=225368.
