Black Screen after random amounts of time.

Hi, I'm marginally new here, but I seem to have a major issue with the PC version of GTA San andreas. My specs are as follows

Windows 7 32 Bit

AMD Athlon 3000+ XP 2.2 GHz

ATI Radeon HD 3450

1 GB Ram

My problem is that i will randomly get crashes whilst playing for a random amount of time. The screen turns black, no display. I had a Nvidia 6600GT prior to this a few years back run no problem, but this ATI card just refused to play it the same way. I tried the search feature and found nothing about my card and black screens that seemed to help my issue.

Can anyone recommend any fixes? And as a side note I'm running Catalyst Control Center 10.9 hotfix(because it's an AGP system.)

Did you download it or install a mod.

The version is 1.0. I normally use SA to play SAMP so i can't upgrade it, but i havent installed it because, even without SAMP installed, it just gives me black screens.

I'm almost positive this is a driver issue with ATI. Nvidia never gave me issues with SA, but when my 6600GT died, ATI was my only choice as they were the only ones with good AGP cards.

Have you checked for over-heating?

In case this is a driver related issue, the only way to find out will be to rollback to an older driver version. This is a trial and error method, so you might have to try quite a few driver versions before you find one that doesn't give you any issues.

It's definitely not overheating. The 6600GT i had went well over 80C at times. This GPU I have now almost never goes over 42C.

One thing I did try though was to overclock my card. I figured it was ATI Powerplay lowering my clock speeds, thus causing an effective crash of the drivers. I just upped them 40MHz each and was able to play San Andreas for an hour at least. no black screens so far. Thanks for your guys' help.

That's an interesting solution. Let us know if it solves your problem for good, so we can start recommending it to others too who are having the same problem as you.

Well just a quick update on the situation. I was able to play GTA SA today for at least 3 hours to test it out. No problems whatsoever for me in terms of freezing with the black screen after random times. Although I installed SAMP to further test the theory, it caused my PC to freeze and have a black screen after about an hour. But I can more than likely say that it was probably the cause of the server I was playing on smile.gif.

So yeah, i would definitely recommend others who were having Black screens after random amounts of time(mainly with ATI) to overclock their cards slightly. It seems to remedy the situation a lot, at least for me.
