bluesboyjr
I'm all for oddjobs, as long as they aren't boring and mundane (e.g. being a bus driver - wow, driving on a set route stopping frequently - that sounds orgasmic. Or working in a shop - barcode scanning has never been this much fun!), and they make some form of sense. For the latter point, I mean things like Vigilante missions. So you just jump in a police car, murder criminals and get paid for it? GTA IV made it make sense - you chose which criminals to find by hacking into the computer, then get "paid" by taking their cold hard cash. Taxi missions, while not my favourite way to pass the time, have always made some form of sense - all you need is a taxi with a light and people will hail you. Plus, they were kinda fun, trying to get from Point A to Point B as fast as possible without smashing yourself up too bad. I never liked Paramedic missions - they made little sense (You're bleeding heavily? Just get in the back by yourself, you'll be fine), and when you take away the context, they're pretty much the same as taxi missions (it's just Point A to Point B with the same Point A all the time), but with a bigger penalty for crashing. Some ideas for oddjobs: Pilot. If the next game takes place in a large area, this could be an interesting option. You could be tasked by a shady contact to fly someone/something important from one area to another, but have to deal with little problems, e.g. flying below the radar, avoiding missiles, landing in a precarious place, etc. Delivery. It all depends on what you're delivering. GTA Chinatown Wars had noodle delivery missions - they would have been quite mundane, if it wasn't for the people shooting you, but then you're left asking what kind of Chinese takeaway business murders its competitors. Replace "noodles" with "drugs" or "weapons", and it all makes sense. Drug dealing. This was a widely appreciated aspect of GTA CW, but it was quite oversimplified, just a simple matter of buy low, sell high - you could have substituted the drugs for fur coats and it wouldn't have made much difference. Add in a few more random occurences, e.g. beating up a punter who doesn't pay up, escaping from someone who'll try to do the same to you, paying off or dealing with the cops, etc. Bodyguard. Lets say that somewhere along the storyline you meet someone quite important, e.g. a politician or a top gangster. From time to time you'd be able to ring them up for short bodyguard missions. Now, I'm aware that many people don't like escort missions, but the problem is often that your escorting someone with the AI of a toaster. If you have to help someone who can either fight with you or know when to get into cover, it should make the whole experience more enjoyable. Shady businesses. If you want something that feels like a job but isn't mundane or "not GTA", how about doing some under the counter jobs for "normal" companies? I'm thinking along the lines of the Quarry missions in GTA SA, where on the outside it seemed like you were working for a respectable business, but you end up doing things like getting rid of safety inspectors or stopping saboteurs. cactus.
I'm all for oddjobs, as long as they aren't boring and mundane (e.g. being a bus driver - wow, driving on a set route stopping frequently - that sounds orgasmic. As boring as it may sound, a job as a bus driver would actually be a good idea as it's a great way to explore the nooks and crannies of the city and ultimately familiarize yourself with the map; same benefit goes for taxi drivers, drug dealing/delivery, and piloting. but no need for bus driver to be excluded.. Kwandilibro
I also want you to be able to be: A subway driver (underground train) A FBI agent Pizza boy Politician Soldier Riot police officer Those all defeat the purpose of being a criminal. A subway driver? They don't even really do anything, since trains run on set tracks. Slow down and speed up. Woohoo! FBI agent? Yeah, the FBI is going to allow some criminal to work for them. Politician? That's boring as f*ck, besides being pointless. And you don't just become a politician, you have to go through law school, become a lawyer, so on and so forth. This isn't the Sims. Soldier? Again, apart from being pointless, you can't just join the army. You have to go through intense training and conditioning. Riot police officer? Police officer? Law enforcement, our sworn arch enemy in GTA? With a staple feature of GTA being evading your enemies, the police? @bluesboyjr, From what I hear, the drug dealing system in CTW was so plain. Buy, sell. Where's the fun in that? I want to have to work my way up through the ranks of drug dealing, gradually increasing my empire. So I could start off as a member of a small drug crew, then gradually develop my own crew, take over corners, blocks, neighborhoods, etc. And there also needs to be the option to pick up shipments of drugs, buy more drugs from suppliers, and battle other drug crews.
