Band logo request

UPDATE: Just had a chat with the guy, turns out we got our wires crossed, he's pretty much just looking for a scaleable version of what's on the poster already (see below), so similar font, horizontal lines through it, still scalable etc. If possible a transparent version, then a black-on-white and a white-on-black would be great.

 

Original Post:

A mate of mine is a rock musician, small time for now, but it earns him enough to live on. He goes around pubs and clubs in the UK with him on the guitar and vocals and a backing tape for the rest, playing covers of stuff like The Clash, Oasis, Razorlight, Snow Patrol etc.

 

He's interested in getting a new logo done for the band, high resolution and easily scalable so it can be used on posters, CD covers, website and wherever else it's required. I know you guys do good work, so let's see what you can come up with for this.

 

The name of the band is Roadstunner, he's pretty open about the theme of the logo, perhaps some sort of road lines/markings in the text but he's not really bothered. He's got a Myspace but doesn't update it much lately, he's going to give it a revamp once some other things are sorted out. If this is any help, here's a poster he uses for gigs at the moment, something that was knocked together a couple of years back: Link.

 

So to recap:

- Band name is Roadstunner

- Generally rock themed logo

- High resolution / easily scalable

Well, to be honest, I think he should invest and get the logo made by professionals.

I think that GFX req. is good for like, uhm, avatars, signatures, GTA logos, sometimes even easy wallpapers. But for companies or bands, or whatever, I think it should be made by professionals, for money.

 

that's just a tip, I'm still looking forward how people will make this.

UNRATED69, those looks more like "techno" style music type. You should use something more rock-related for these. And i think it should be more of stuff in it, not only text.

And he asked it to be big, very big, to use for posters and stuff.

What txdeditor said is true. You should really ask some professional artist. I'm not saying were not good but you'd really get the best result from some one more experienced.

Appreciate what you're saying about the professional angle, but I thought it'd be good practice for guys here while also obviously saving him a bit of cash that he really needs for kit/transport etc.

 

Logos do indeed need to be bigger than what unrated69's done, and also less reliant on colour to grab attention, since the colour may need to be adapted for different situations and uses.

I might have a go at this later, but I'm also on the bandwagon that suggests if this guy is serious to go to a professional. There'll also be less of a legal nightmare just in case you mate somehow gains global stardom.

 

There are some rules for band logos that I've abided by before though, the most important being that it should be able to printed in black and white and still be recognisable. I don't mean greyscale either, I mean clear, two-tone black and white. This is because of stuff like being put as a support act on a poster or on a line up poster, organisers will want it as simple as possible. It also shouldn't be too complicated, unless you're a really hard thrash metal band where it's kind of expected of you. The last major rule I've used is that, remember, it has to look good on a drum kit (I know the guy in question uses a backing track, this is more of a general rule) 'cos it's the first part of the band you'll actually see on stage.

I totally agree about the first lines, cause if this band get professional and gets a lot of cash, then it would be pretty much a shame to that one who made the logo.

I have a very hi res version of it and it is in vector format so it can be resized easily.

You guys got it all wrong. He wants a free logo, he won't pay 2-300 $ for a professional logo lol. Graphics artits won't work for free. That's why you join a forum and ask people to do it.

Despite my earlier remarks about legality I still had a go. I've got this in a (roughly) 2400x1100 size too, for both versions.

 

I took the band name quite literally, with a road and a lightning bolt:

 

Lightning bolt could be seen as cheesy, so here it is sans bolt:

I'll be the first to admit that this is quite rough and will happily do a cleaner version if chosen on concept.

 

BTW, if your friend uses my logo and makes it big with it I will hunt him down for money (I'm not sure if I'm joking or not).

Good luck to him nonetheless.

We did not get it wrong. We know that he wants it for free but we juat suggested that he still should look for a professional artists.

Good ideas in all of those so far, I'll let him have a look and get some feedback. But, two things:

 

Guru: Could you do it as one word so there's no ambiguity about the name?

 

Robinski: Could we have the lightning bolt the other way around so it's more obviously an 'S' rather than just a seperator? I did it roughly in Paint myself and I reckon it still looks lightning-ish that way round.
