Some performance tips

Recommended Posts

Not sure if it is used before, but i searched the forum and didn't find a similar topic

i am sure all the pc gta4 players know the commandline.txt file

yesterday i was playing with the commands, and i found

-noprecache -nomemrestrict -norestrictions -novblank

greatly improved the performance of gta4 and the EFLC, by around 20 fps (i am not joking)

i have i7-860, 4gb ddr3 dominator, gtx275 with 197.45 driver if it helps

try yourself and see if it improves the performance

Command lines and what they do are listed right there, most people can put 2 and 2 together and figure out pretty quickly which ones help performance. Heck there's even a section in the thread dedicated to reducing lag/stuttering.

No there isn't one listing your exact combination, because it's not a good idea to use a couple of the ones you've listed as it removes vram limitations and will cause extreme texture pop-ins.

@Chevyboy: just give up already. Yes, you proved your point but you still fail to understand that no one has put this exact information together as a tip AND finding out a good combo of working commandline options is NOT as easy as ABC... If you have nothing to say related to this topic and/or if you don't like it; don't reply to it.

Anyhow, this didn't improve my performance. Same frame rate with or without these settings. With latest drivers that is.

Odd I didn't know you had control over who could post what in these forums, perhaps you could avoid telling people to "give up".

I've said something related to the topic in hand in every post. I'll repeat myself once again. These command lines are well known, sticked and have been posted before time and time again. They are also not good to use for most users as they remove vram restrictions to allow for higher settings and will cause texture pop-in's.

Clear enough for you this time?

darn, i guess it improves performance only with certain setups. i am in uni now, will upload a comparison screenshot when i get home.

edit: i tested with 1.0.4.0 version of gta4 and it works. i dont think it works on later versions as because R* really fk it up

ps: i was wrong about eflc. it goes smooth at night but fps goes down by 20-30 as soon the clock hits 5am. i guess R* needs to release another patch real soon

first of all, what is this forum about? and what is the purpose of it? performance tips. i see hundreds of threads.

why dont they just delete all the threads and merge all threads into one? - i am following your thoughts sir.

this section of the forum allows people to share fixes, tips and etc. even if it doesnt work, it still shows some people keen to give a tip/help others to improve performance.

"extreme texture pop-ins"

um, that never happened to me. maybe you need to start thinking about upgrading your cpu(from c2d) and your gfx card. i suggest you use win7/winxp, because in your sig you have vista x64, the sh*ttest o/s ever

and why it isnt a good idea when you dont test it? i assume you know everything in your head, virtually double clicks launch gtaiv in your head and play it in your head. "oh, i see no improvements, lets rage at this guy"

Has nothing to do with the fact that you may or may not have noticed it. The command lines you suggested "-nomemrestrict -norestrictions" remove vram limits for the game. Thus when a point comes (and it will) when your vram becomes full textures will fail to load and you will get texture pop-in's. This has nothing to do with the CPU anyone has, the GPU anyone has or even the vram speed anyone has, it's 100% on the vram amount. You can argue this all you like but that's one of the nice things about computers, they can't ignore fact and the above is documented fact.

Given that you didn't know this I won't bother taking your "Vista is crap" comment seriously, especially since you provide no fact to back up your statement, just more assumption and uninformed opinion. Interesting fact for you, Win7 was build around the Vista platform. Should think on that a bit before you spout off like that.

I don't test it because I know what the command lines do, I know how games react to that and I know how video memory works.

Edit: Because I'm in a good mood, before you go spouting off about something you obviously know nothing about have a read through the guides here and you may learn a thing or two about operating systems.

Trust me, your claim that "Vista is the crappiest OS ever" holds water as well as a screen door. Go on have a look, you might learn something.
