The way i see it, Ryder, big smoke, Sweet, Big and Little Devil, etc, used to hang out as Teenagers, and Carl was a little younger than them, wanting to be a grove one day, as he got older, he became a grove like them, so CJ would be in early 20's and Ryder maybe late 20's.

I don't know so much about CJs and Ryder's history, but Ryder did look older than CJ in SA.

I know that's a joke. But actually we don't know, until Rockstar says something about that.

There is no apparent Passenger Ships in the port of Los Santos, so air travel would be the way.

Unacompanied flight in the US would be 18 years of age minimum.

CJ ran away so he wouldn't have permission to travel underage.

CJ leaving at 18 and coming back 5 years later would make him 23 minimum.

Ryder's age is indeterminate as we have no facts to use as a base. He may or may not be a cotemporary of Sweet or Big Smoke but seems younger than them.
