Loading Screen Crash

So my problem is that when my game gets to the loading screen where it zooms in and out of the pictures of the people the screen suddenly flashes but I can see my mouse cursor and move it around, and the loading screen with the people doesn't end. This has only happened recently and I think there's a connection with editing my texture files in-game. My reason for this is this happens when I edit handling.dat and it happens when I install graphics mods that replace text files. After removing the graphics mods and replacing the edited handling.dat with an original copy the problem disappears. But the weird thing is I had edited the handling.dat american.gxt and used a graphics mod for a while, but then I edited the american.gxt file more and that's when the crash started so I know it doesn't always happen when I edit the files.

 

So if anyone has any ideas on what I can do to fix the crash, it would be very much appreciated. Also if anyone needs anymore information so that they can diagnose the problem just let me know. Thanks a lot.
