How do you take cover?

I know there is a way to take cover, but I don't remember the instructions as to how to do it.

Sometimes Niko will automatically take cover after a cutscene when a shootout is about to begin....

but I don't know how to do it myself.

 

Which buttons do we press and in what order? (I have PS3)

Or, if you are on the X-Box, it's RB.

or, if you are on PC, its Q (default) which brings up an interesting point. go to your controller options to find some other useful info. I recently discovered I can turn off the radio by pressing the X key. (useful when listening for the pigeons cooing) and changing driveby weapons from smg to handgun to grenade also using Q when driving.
