Pomorski
I've been running GTA IV & EFLC for a long time now with absolutely no problems but, a couple days ago I noticed that there was a driver update for my video card so I decided to update it and since then, I can no longer get GTA IV to work on higher setting than the absolute minimum. Actually, GTA IV does not let me choose anything but the actual minimums, e.g. try to change anything and it refuses to change. It's not a change, save settings and it reverts back. It just plain will not change the settings. I have two ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 video cards with CrossFire X enabled. Using Vista 64-bit SP 2. Just updated to Catalyst Control Center 10.7. 6GB system memory. Intel Core i7-920 I try to keep the hardware and software as up-to-date as possible in general. What I have done to attempt to fix this is to completely uninstall the previous drivers which includes going into the registry and deleting anything related to ATI and just plain anything ATI on the computer. I believe I have done all I could to completely wipe the graphics drivers off and then install the new 10.7 Catalyst. This didn't do a single thing to fix the problem. I've uninstalled GTA IV (which is through Steam) and reinstalled it to no avail. All of my other games and pretty much anything else in general work perfectly fine. So, here I be. Any one have any thoughts on this issue? What else could I try? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/457444-ati-graphics-issues/ Share on other sites
mkey82
Try to delete game settings, this usually causes the settings being reset. Alternately, you can install the old driver version which was working fine for you as there is nothing new in these latest ATI driver releases. When you uninstalled the old driver, did you run the uninstaller from control panel first? Alternately, you can install the old driver version which was working fine for you as there is nothing new in these latest ATI driver releases. When you uninstalled the old driver, did you run the uninstaller from control panel first? I tried the "delete settings" thing but to no avail. This is the order of uninstall I did: 1) Went to Programs & Features and uninstalled anything with ATI. 2) Went to Device Manager and uninstalled the drivers shown for my Display Adapters. 3) Went to RegEdit and tracked down anything related to ATI in my registry. 4) Went to the appropriate folders on C: and deleted anything ATI related. I think that pretty much kills the drivers for my video cards. I guess the only option is to roll the drivers back so I guess I'll give that a try. Stupid video card. Thanks for the help mkey82. Pomorski
I've uninstalled Catalyst 10.7 and installed Catalyst 10.6 and it has done nothing to fix the problem. Same issue. I guess I can keep going further and further back hoping that one of them will work... mkey82
Have you tried using commandlines to set settings? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/457444-ati-graphics-issues/#findComment-1060094734 Share on other sites
Pomorski
Have you tried using commandlines to set settings? I've tried the -norestrictions and then go and change the settings but when I set it to what it was before, it runs very, very choppy. It's as if it's not recognizing the video cards at all. Hell, I can set the settings down below what I knew they were and it runs choppy like all get out. I've tried rolling back to previous drivers but that hasn't worked. Absolutely no other piece of software is having a problem except GTA IV; so very weird and frustrating at the same time... mkey82
No, do NOT use nomemrestrict, use the commands to set texture quality, shadow density, draw distance etc. respectively. Gamester42
I had the same issue with the 10.7 drivers. However, after some reading on the forums, I found out that most believe that the 9.8 catalyst drivers work the best with GTA4. I installed 9.8 and it fix it for me. Pomorski
No, do NOT use nomemrestrict, use the commands to set texture quality, shadow density, draw distance etc. respectively. Just out of curiosity, why the big emphasis on not to use -norestrictions? I remember somewhere on this board that being offered as a fix in one of the faqs. mkey82
In most cases nommerestrict causes instability and availablevidemem is a lot more dependable, especially when used with moderate values, like not i excess of 1.5. RTID75
I have the same issue too. Hadn't played GTA for a few weeks, and in the mean time I have updated drivers twice (currently 10.8) , and on trying the game for the first time since found it stuck in low resolution with most options off, and as mentioned above - not actually physically able to boost the settings to what they were before. I'm loathe to change back to an old version of the driver, but if someone (Rockstar or ATI) don't sort it then I suppose I will have to... RTID75
I've fixed this on mine. Re-installed 10.9 then added the commandline text -norestrictions and the game now runs better than it has in ages!
