They need to bring more life to the ghetto areas

These are some things R* needs to consider about gangs and the ghetto in general. Unless of course, GTA shows up in London........

If gta goes to london there will be a pile of wanabe gangstars running about with knifes acting hard.

Dude, go to Hackney and you'll see that there are real gangsters (area gangs) who are armed with guns and all kinds of melee weapons. My dad's friend got beheaded by a gang in Clapton so if GTA is set in London, the only places that can be like a ghetto/gang area is some areas around Hackney or areas around South London. But you are right, there are a lot of stupid wannabes in London and the worst stuff happens more at night so don't think I'm having a go at you, I'm just saying.

Now, I like GTA 4 and i like all gta games except for LCS, but in gta4, i felt like they didnt really give the ghetto a real feel. You can be in the a sky rise project building and not feel any diff then if ur in Star Junction.

 

In vice city, when you were in hatian turf, you felt the difference than say being in ocean beach. You knew you had to get out of their turf asap, unless you were bored and just wanted a shootout.

 

In san andreas, they had the classic west coast style gangs. Now while the hoods on this game were more diverse, they still didn't have the same danger effect/feel that vice city had, but then again, alot of hoods in LA dont feel that dangerous anways.

 

Now as far as the next gta, I think they should bring the vice city feel back.

Make the street lights dimmer, actually have people standing on street corners with their guns out. Have abandoned houses etc.. I mean, in every city the ghettos are always the worse area, and that's how in should be in gta. You should actually feel like your in danger.

I don't think it is specifically the VC feel you want back. What seems to create and maintain the atmosphere of the ghetto in games like VC and SA is the actual criminality and extensive behaiviour of the NPCs.

Hostile gangsters actually actively react to your presence on their turfs by trying to fight you or open fire on you, something which was unfortunatelt badly missing from IV.

 

You felt no danger whatsoever when walking through hostile gang turf - I expected as soon as I would return to Hove Beach after Roman's Sorrow, I'll be attacked by masked gunmen in open daylight. Instead what we got was being able to walk the streets openly no different - unless you open fire first, and even then it is more likely the police will come after you like anywher else.

 

Another thing with this danger factor was the actual area design. IV was overall way to clean - probably because it was very realistically modeled on NYC which in general doesn't have such badly debilitated ghettos. In VC and SA you easily see a difference in ped clothing, walking styles, dialogue etc..., though in IV I rarely manage to notice that big a difference unless I go to the Eastern-European/Russian areas, and even there nothing is that spectacular.

Yea, that year probaly around 750-800 of the murders happened in south central.

 

South centrals population at the time was 500k.

 

No city in american history has ever had 500,000 people with a murder rate 150-160.

 

Not to mention the 53 people killed in 3 days or the 8 people killed in 5 minutes in one neighborhood i believe.

Thats what you think mate. What you said in your last comment is not quite all true. Have you ever lived in London? If you haven't, then I suggest that you should'nt talk about things that you don't know too much about. If you do live in London, then maybe you are either ignorant to the really bad stuff that goes in the city or you just have no knowledge or awareness of it. Either way, judging by what you are saying you clearly dont have much idea of what you are talking about.

 

London is not just a place full of wannabe gangstas and hard men with knives. Don't get me wrong, in London you do get a lot silly, young wannabes with knives and other weapons that like to think they are real bad and gangsta. But there are many street gangs and crews in London that are very real and very dangerous, especially in many parts of South London, North-West London, Hackney and Tottenham. Those kind of London street gangs almost always armed and they often do carry guns, and they are generally responsible for most of the shootings and gun murders that happen in London. Read the news reports and crime statistics about London gun crime and you will see for yourself. A lot of teens as young as 14 in London carry guns and pistols, its a very common thing now. As a native Londoner who grew up in the city's rough areas, I've grown up around a lot of it personally and I can tell you that London has a lot more than a pile of hard men with knives.

For anyone a little confused by Conal's comments, I can tell you that London definitely has large criminal underworld that includes not just street gangs, but organized crime groups like native White British crime groups, Turkish Mafia, Albanian gangs, Russian Mafia, Yardies, Nigerian/West African gangs, Somalian gangs, Triads, Asian gangs etc.

I lived in Clapton, Stamford Hill and Tottenham before I moved to South Gate and those areas were horrible. I am not ignorant but some guys in Hackney or Peck ham are real bad news and they kill a lot of people. My friend got chased around Holloway by 18 year old gangsters with magnums and a double barrel shotgun. Hackney is bad but I know the gangs in the US are FAR worse.

I see your point. The slums in IV werent really alive. The most you could see is a cop chasing someone on foot which isnt much. Why dont they make it so that the cops actually put on the handcuffs when they end the chase. They shouldve made the gangs more easy to spot by the colors. Like some version of the east coast crips and bloodz. Maybe more of a variety of gangs. They dont want any attention coming onto their unit, so they don't sit in colours/colors showing that they're part of the unit. They don't need to show they're representing, as they would be well known in the specific areas they operate in. They'd see them and straight away they'd become an eye-sore to the citizens or by-standers

Yep. Portland and any unfinished missions in Portland became hell the moment you killed Salvatore. Gangs that are hostile to you should, in my view, just view you with suspicion and be generally rude to you and easily provoked by you. Maybe mug you or order a small ambush on you if you go down a dark alleyway at night.

Yeah, I kind of touched on that in my first post, also if you look rich, and are in an dark alleyway your chances of being ambushed should increase, or if your in an enemy gang/you killed someone in that gang, your chances of being attacked should therefore increase.

 

Also this is kind of off topic but pertains to the gang side of discussion here, is that if you kill a higher up in a powerful gang, that gang should send hit men after you (not to often) once in awhile, say you go to your nice cozy safe house and you go to sleep to save and you wake up half way though the six game hours to find a big scary mother f*cker in your house with a Mossberg shotgun in your face, then you'd have to fight him off. Also if you get a wanted Lv. over 3 stars the police, even after you lose them should try to tail you, and set up stake outs on your usually haunts, and or raid your house. It's a bit farfetched but it’d be fun if executed right. (your usual haunts being safe houses bosses houses. friends places where you go often etc)

I see your point. The slums in IV werent really alive. The most you could see is a cop chasing someone on foot which isnt much. Why dont they make it so that the cops actually put on the handcuffs when they end the chase. They shouldve made the gangs more easy to spot by the colors. Like some version of the east coast crips and bloodz. Maybe more of a variety of gangs. I dont fully agree with you on your point about Rockstar making gang members being more easy to spot by their colours in GTA 4. That was one thing I like about GTA 4 - I really liked that the fact in certain hoods in Liberty City, you could start trouble with someone thats dressed with no typical gang colours and looking seemingly unarmed, only for them to pull a out a gun and start blasting at you. It made causing trouble with people in the street a very risky thing to do, giving a sense of random danger. In real-life, I'm pretty sure most gang members in New York do not walk around parading their gang's colours and advertising the fact that they belong to to this and that gang, even the East Coast Bloods. Things are a little different on the East Coast where the police and authorities have more control in city districts, even in the ghettoes, and if they do wear colours it's probably no more than a few items that can be blended into other clothing as so not to make it too obvious. I don't think they are all that stupid. In think GTA 4 got that part right. But, you still will always get a few guys that do the opposite who either young and stupid, or just guys that love the attention and infamous reputation of gang membership.

 

However, if there is another GTA game thats based on LA (Sand Andreas) thats comes out in the near future, then yeah your gang colour concept does apply, just like it did in the first San Andreas. I'm pretty sure that street gangs like the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles and the West Coast are still wearing their gang colours openly, in present-day. It dont mean the gangs out in LA are more stupid, I think its more to do with the fact that LA gangs like Bloods and Crips excerise a lot more control and authority in their hoods than the gangs in New York. The police in LA struggle with those street gangs so bad, that they cannot even always enter gang neighbourhoods without a mini-army. Plus it would suit the theme of the game. Any crime game based on LA gang culture will just have to include that color-gang idendification feature, its only natural.

This is true, in the "Nickerson Gardens" Housing project in Watts, police would not enter the area without having basically like you said, a mini army with them. Not to forget this is the largest housing project in the western united states, and its all low rises, no sky high stuff like in New York or Chicago.

In London, you do get shootings and drive bys but they are really really rare unlike the US. You will likely get stabbed or battered than shot by a London gang.

One shooting I remember was when my neighbour got shot in Wood Green and died but he was unlucky because in the US, I think starring at the wrong type of people is gonna get your ass blasted off.

In London, you do get shootings and drive bys but they are really really rare unlike the US. You will likely get stabbed or battered than shot by a London gang.
