They need to bring more life to the ghetto areas

I think North Holland was a pretty good rendition of the real life Harlem. South Bohan felt very ghetto-ish as well.

@ Rucke - Except for the fact that Rockstar completely messed up the original North Holland look in the Ballad of Gay Tony by overrunning the area with white biker gangs (Angels of Death).

North Holland is clearly based on Black Harlem in New York. The original GTA 4 game really did a good job of making North Holland look like Harlem, with the high-rise red-brick projects, brownstone apartments, the basketball courts, bodegas, cornerstores, urban high-street stores, fast-food joints and the predominantly black residents and pedestrians and the huge presence of black street gangs like the North Holland Hustlers. Then in the Ballad of Gay Tony, Rockstar just ruined everything and put swarms of white biker gangs in North Holland. Since when were there ever a major presence of modern-day white biker gangs in Harlem or even New York City for that matter? The only gangs in Harlem you are gonna see are African-American street gangs and the Hispanic gangs in Spanish Harlem.

That the biker idea for North Holland was straight retarded. I really dont know why Rockstar did that.

South Bohan was done very well, I agree with that one.

ON TOPIC:

I think GTA 4 did a brilliant job of re-creating the ghettoes and rough areas of New York. For instance there were many really rough-looking parts of Broker like the Firefly Projects, Beechwood and Schottler, there were some real grimey-looking streets in South Bohan and as I've said above, North Holland was done very well to look like a Harlem ghetto. Acter in Alderney looked a bit like parts of Newark, in New Jersey which is a very tough place.

The main problem with GTA 4's Liberty City was that nothing really that bad seemed to happening in any of the city's dangerous and rough neighbourhoods that did not invlove the player. You had to ignite the trouble yourself with gangs or police to get any mayhem started. You very rarely, if ever saw gang members or mobsters having shoot-outs with each other, you did not see any criminals committing crimes on other people like street robberies, stealing, mugging, getting into gunfights, massive brawls, getting into shoot-outs or chases with police, NONE of that stuff. You could'nt even at least hear gunshots in the distance. There was just no sense of danger whatsoever in the bad neighbourhoods in the GTA 4-era Libery City and I really missed that.

I loved the way GTA Vice City made Vice City's rough neighbourhoods very dangerous places to be in. I can still remember being amazed at walking through Little Havana and Little Haiti minding my own business and then seeing vicious shoot-outs and gunfights breaking out between Cuban and Haitian gangs at a moments notice. I also liked the way you could see theieves stealing cars or sometimes carjacking you and pulling you out of the car and driving off! In GTA San Andreas, you had to avoid certain neighbourhoods to avoid getting blasted by other gangs or getting into shoot-outs. There were gang members having gunfights in SA that would not invlove you aswell. I miss all those elements of a rough GTA city neighbourhood/ghetto.

Great post.

I agree, the ghetto areas were just as boring as the suburbs. In reality, NY ghettos are one of the most "loudest" places in the country.

Yea I agree, when your in the ghetto it should feel like it, which it doesn't in GTA 4. It just feels like a run down version of East Park or Star Junction.

San Andreas was very nicely done with the sound effects and the random events like people stealing your car and stuff, you actually had to be carefull in the ghetto. And not forgetting how fast you could be killed in Ballas turf if you weren't prepared for a shootout. But even SA could have been done better. Vice City slums were also very dangerous, but it was more of a place where you would find random bullets flying everywhere, a full scale gang war would happen just randomly which was quite annoying sometimes.

In GTA V they should definately focus on the slums/ghettos more. After all, the game is about crime.. and where else would you find it? Most of my suggestions have already been mentioned like being able to see large groups of people on the street corner, and then a drive-by from a rival gang. And also stuff like drug deals, random crimes.. and people driving around in their cars with the music up full. And apartement buildings being used as crack houses and full of gang members and maybe even guarded. It would also by pretty cool to maybe witness a raid by the police in one of these buildings (a very rare event).

Just small things would make it actually feel like you have a gun for a reason. I think some areas in LC had the right look, but there was nothing going on. So in GTA V there should be all the things mentioned, and more!

GTA IV Roleplay

You're right. "The Hood" hasnt been filled with a feel of the ghetto life at all, except in SA...

Where the dealers?

Where the thugs robbin' folk on the sidewalk?

Where the dice-games?

Where the groups?

Where the intimidation?

Where the patrol cars?

Where the drive-bys?

Where the street shootouts?

Where the rap-battles?

All of these can be found with in-depth detail of the hood/ghetto/slums, and from an insider's & outsider's point of view.

NYC is the safest big city in USA, in this point GTA IV looked real because it was without doubt the safest city in the 3d GTA. biggrin.gif

I agree that the run down districts of Liberty city are too safe, nothing much happening, even in the middle of night.

No fight between gang, no criminal activites...

It would be great to sometimes hear some gun shot while walking in the street.

North Holland full of white people feels very weird to me.

Honestly I avoided this district as much as I can unlike in the original GTA IV.

A city of 8 million is going to be safe "statistically" wise.

But ghettos in the big cities are always worse than ghettos of smaller cities, due to the fact that the ghettos are bigger(way bigger) with way more people and way more killings.

It's just the the good parts out way the bad parts by a good margin nowdays.

@Kwandilibro, I give you mad props for that post.

I believe San Andreas hit the spot, but could of done better. I would like to see an improvement on this. But to keep it simple, yet attractive.. i would personally like to see a liquor store. To me, the hood isn't a hood without that liquor store. Imagine, the front door always wide open in the day with lots going on around the area. Ghetto looking cars parked with flats, drugdealing, people yelling, fighting, burning rubber, loud music. Chaos in general. Drunkies buying 40z stepping out with brown paper bags. A ghetto park within the area with hobos sleeping in the benches. A basketball court with no net. Lowriders or nice cars passing the street every now and then on 13's or 24's.

Where the rap-battles?

Haha I'd love to see this going on in GTA neXt, I'd be a cool way to past the time by watching people free style.

Yeah, but I agree with the general consensus that IV ghettos weren't as good as they could have been, I'd also like to see street gangs get in to fights, whether just with knife's, and bats, or full blown gun fights, with the gun fights being less common, also the gangs should acknowledge you being there, by like another poster said saying things like "Your in the wrong hood holms" and if your in a gang they could trash talk you. Also there should be dimmed out lights, burnt-out cars, random muggings police ruffling people up etc. more random events would be nice.

On another note, that pertains to the subject there should be more variants of cars, as in clunkers, modified ones, and the extras would appear randomly say you may find a plain stock Saber but with custom rims, and in the ghetto most cars would be rundown missing windows, sometimes with plastic over them and other sings that the car was in disrepair, also and just because you in a car doesn’t mean that car should show up more, nothing was weirder in GTAIV or other ones that driving an Infernus in Bohan and then see 6 or 7 on the same street. Another nice thing would be that the nicer car you drive in a bad neighborhood the more likely you are to get jacked, that way you’d have to try to fit in a bit more, also if you looked way out of place, gangs (especially if in the game your in a rival gang) would become slightly more aggravated towards your over time.

@Lemus I can't agree more with your post, those ideas would be sweet.

All these ideas are great but in the end they miss one thing.

Extreme Danger

I hate to referen-well no I love to reference this, in GTA 3 mafia turf was extremely dangerous without a bulletproof vechice. Gangs shooting each other and so forth is nice but at the end of the day if there aren't 10-20 dudes with high powered weapons around you at any given time ready to end you, or they shoot on sight it's boring in the end. I need to be scared to drive through areas because

A. The overwhemling force will kill be quickly

B. They pull me out the car and beat me to death

C. No or little police

D. Overpowered weapons.

I love the feeling of GTA 3 danger, lets get that back again..unless you're a pussy and suck at GTA in which case go play GTA 4.

Honestly, I despised seeing all those bikers in North Holland. It made me want to choke someone, that's how stupid it looked. I hope R* never pulls a stunt like that again.

@Bobgtafan, I remember playing III, and even LCS, and trying to avoid mafia neighborhoods at all costs. Those dudes were wildly dangerous. Two shots from a shotgun equals a burning car, which is no fun with 5 guys with shotguns flooding the street. Even walking was super dangerous. And the diablos were ruthless too, although I would just f*ck with them for laughs.

But to me, SA felt really dangerous. I mean, the Ballas managed to destroy a lot of my cars while I was flying throught the neighborood. And if I saw them, they either started talking sh*t and then shooting me, or just shooting me. And of course, they always ripped me out of my car.

I never bought VC, so I wouldn't know about the Haitians.

Now rap battles, that would be funny to see.

I also agree with the person who brought up the idea about those gang members with incredible sight. I mean, what gang member can spot one person out of multiple cars and immediately know who you are? And the police do it too!

@Conal123, That almost never happens, if ever, in America.

I agree 100% seeing all those AOD bikers in North Holland made me literally sick to my stomach I mean there's hardly any white people (no offense) in Harlem in real life. I mean seriously when I saw that I thought it was some sort of bad glitch but I guess I was wrong point being made R* better not do that sort of thing again.

Actually, there are some white people in Harlem, but nowhere near to the extent of TBoGT, and definitely not in the projects. You have to be dirt poor to live in the projects, otherwise you can't apply.

@ ps2_master94 - Thanks for the compliment bro.

@ Kwandilibro - You never bought or played GTA: Vice City? Damn man, you really missed out BIG time! Vice City was and still is the best GTA in my opinion followed closely by San Andreas. Tommy Vercetti was just pure legendary stuff, for real. That was the very first GTA where you could build your own gang, (well kinda), buy and own businesses and properties and make money from your illegal and legal enterprises. Vice City was the game that took GTA to another level. I also think Vice City had the best storyline and characters aswell. Its a shame you never played it, you can always go back to it if you wish, but it would feel dated now seeing as we are now used to way more advanced console technology now.

I can tell you about the Haitians in VC. The Haitian gangs in Vice City were just a crazy bunch of homicidal maniacs and extremely trigger happy. They always would have shoot-outs and gunfights with Cuban gangs, whenever the two met on the streets. If you manage to piss them off real bad, they shoot at you on sight whenever they spot you. Little Haiti really was one real dangerous place to be in Vice City. You always needed a gun whenever you had to go through Little Haiti.

Yeah that thing about putting white biker gangs in North Holland (Harlem) in TBOGT just really bothered me man. I was so pi**ed off that the North Holland Hustlers were nowhere to be seen in North Holland in TBOGT. It really spoiled what otherwise was a nice addition to GTA 4. Thats just like putting ghetto black gangs hanging out on the streets in the nice, expensive parts of downtown Algonquin (Manhattan). It just did not look right. Just what was Rockstar thinking? There should'nt even have been biker gangs in Liberty City/Alderney in the first place, they should have saved biker gangs for the next GTA San Andreas game as I know you get lots of biker gangs on the West Coast in California. Biker gangs are not really known to have any kind of significant presence in New York and New Jersey.

Yeah there are some white people in Harlem but what TBoGT did was just overkill. Outlaw bikers are usually low-mid income people but usually they will live in a pretty decent area of town.

I thought IV was fine, there was just hardly ever any N.P.C's doing things.

I remember in San Andreas, people would drag you out of your car at the traffic lights.

In Vice City, the Haitian slum. I always remember them shooting at me, ha ha.

The Warriors is the best game Rockstar has ever made, in my opinion.

These are some things R* needs to consider about gangs and the ghetto in general. Unless of course, GTA shows up in London........

If gta goes to london there will be a pile of wanabe gangstars running about with knifes acting hard. biggrin.gif

Dude, go to Hackney and you'll see that there are real gangsters (area gangs) who are armed with guns and all kinds of melee weapons. My dad's friend got beheaded by a gang in Clapton so if GTA is set in London, the only places that can be like a ghetto/gang area is some areas around Hackney or areas around South London. But you are right, there are a lot of stupid wannabes in London and the worst stuff happens more at night so don't think I'm having a go at you, I'm just saying.

You're right. You wanna' see a "british" ghetto, as you "yanks" say, you'd see Hackney as one of the rough, lower-class areas in the GTA game. (Or an area based upon Hackney).

I lived in Hackney for 11 years, and it wasn't a good place to be growing up as a kid, but when we moved up north, it's like you've become immune to fearing the streets, because its no way as bad as Hackney.

For gangs, it has a strong spine to it... you have your street gangs, then you get the english mobs, like Bethnal Green.

It seems that in some places in the US, and probably in London to, some gangs just excell in the art of kissing balls. Gangs who claim to be hard, but they're really just some pussies with knives and a few handguns. And most of them don't do anything but intimidate people.

Why do niggas act like they hard, when they know they butt?
-50 Cent

I think another interesting thing R* could try is having the pussy gangs getting their asses kicked regularly by the stronger gangs. This means regular beatings, robbing, stealing drugs, extortion, and thosse wonderful shootouts.

Thats what you think mate. What you said in your last comment is not quite all true. Have you ever lived in London? If you haven't, then I suggest that you should'nt talk about things that you don't know too much about. If you do live in London, then maybe you are either ignorant to the really bad stuff that goes in the city or you just have no knowledge or awareness of it. Either way, judging by what you are saying you clearly dont have much idea of what you are talking about.

London is not just a place full of wannabe gangstas and hard men with knives. Don't get me wrong, in London you do get a lot silly, young wannabes with knives and other weapons that like to think they are real bad and gangsta. But there are many street gangs and crews in London that are very real and very dangerous, especially in many parts of South London, North-West London, Hackney and Tottenham. Those kind of London street gangs almost always armed and they often do carry guns, and they are generally responsible for most of the shootings and gun murders that happen in London. Read the news reports and crime statistics about London gun crime and you will see for yourself. A lot of teens as young as 14 in London carry guns and pistols, its a very common thing now. As a native Londoner who grew up in the city's rough areas, I've grown up around a lot of it personally and I can tell you that London has a lot more than a pile of hard men with knives.

I was referring to street gangs on in this response. For anyone a little confused by Conal's comments, I can tell you that London definitely has large criminal underworld that includes not just street gangs, but organized crime groups like native White British crime groups, Turkish Mafia, Albanian gangs, Russian Mafia, Yardies, Nigerian/West African gangs, Somalian gangs, Triads, Asian gangs etc.

I gotta say, I agree with this thread completely. That's one of the things R* needs to work on, getting neighbourhoods to feel right. The business districts need to be busier. The suburbs need to feel quieter and more suburban (I was always annoyed by how Leftwood and Westdyke seemed to have more pedestrians than Star Junction). The rough areas need to feel rough. In EVERY GTA-viable city, you will have tough areas (ghetto or otherwise) and R* needs to seriously work on them. They need to make the street gangs feel dangerous and behave realistically for one. They need to be seen smoking, doing deals, hanging out, gambling. Even non-gang peds should be seen smoking joints or getting into fights in these tougher, poorer areas. They need to give each neighbourhood a better ambient feel, and with ghettoes they could do that by making them have dirtier streets and darker alleyways than say a rich trendy hipster district, and making pedestrians, gangs and police all behave differently.

I agree with you completely, I mean I liked what R* did with the hobo's in IV it was very enjoyable and realistic when you'd see them gather up around the fire and ask you for some cash. I want to be able to walk into a bad neighborhood and get held up at gunpoint that sort of thing just sounds cool to me for some reason.

Now, I like GTA 4 and i like all gta games except for LCS, but in gta4, i felt like they didnt really give the ghetto a real feel. You can be in the a sky rise project building and not feel any diff then if ur in Star Junction.

In vice city, when you were in hatian turf, you felt the difference than say being in ocean beach. You knew you had to get out of their turf asap, unless you were bored and just wanted a shootout.

In san andreas, they had the classic west coast style gangs. Now while the hoods on this game were more diverse, they still didn't have the same danger effect/feel that vice city had, but then again, alot of hoods in LA dont feel that dangerous anways.

Now as far as the next gta, I think they should bring the vice city feel back.

Make the street lights dimmer, actually have people standing on street corners with their guns out. Have abandoned houses etc.. I mean, in every city the ghettos are always the worse area, and that's how in should be in gta. You should actually feel like your in danger.

PS: idc if u dont want a ghetto game, they're gonna put a hood in the next gta so deal with it.

I don't think it is specifically the VC feel you want back. What seems to create and maintain the atmosphere of the ghetto in games like VC and SA is the actual criminality and extensive behaiviour of the NPCs.

Hostile gangsters actually actively react to your presence on their turfs by trying to fight you or open fire on you, something which was unfortunatelt badly missing from IV.

You felt no danger whatsoever when walking through hostile gang turf - I expected as soon as I would return to Hove Beach after Roman's Sorrow, I'll be attacked by masked gunmen in open daylight. Instead what we got was being able to walk the streets openly no different - unless you open fire first, and even then it is more likely the police will come after you like anywher else.

Another thing with this danger factor was the actual area design. IV was overall way to clean - probably because it was very realistically modeled on NYC which in general doesn't have such badly debilitated ghettos. In VC and SA you easily see a difference in ped clothing, walking styles, dialogue etc..., though in IV I rarely manage to notice that big a difference unless I go to the Eastern-European/Russian areas, and even there nothing is that spectacular.

I actually hated the whole "enemy gangs attack you in broad daylight" aspect. It pissed me off so much, ESPECIALLY in III. Maybe make them attack you in dark alleyways, but not shoot you as you walk or drive through the streets, especially when you're in an ambulance or something.

What are you talking about? NY has some of the grimiest ghettos in the US.

You must be thinking of LA, where the ghettos are dangrous as hell, but look like some New England suburbs.

I know, that whole gangs attack you on sight and can pick your car out immediately even if you're going 120mph really pissed be off, VC was bit better about it, but in III I didn't even go pack to Portland, waste of time you had to be strapped to the teeth with guns and ammo to survive, and/or have a fast car.

Yep. Portland and any unfinished missions in Portland became hell the moment you killed Salvatore. Gangs that are hostile to you should, in my view, just view you with suspicion and be generally rude to you and easily provoked by you. Maybe mug you or order a small ambush on you if you go down a dark alleyway at night.
