I forgot what Toreno said

OK, this is really stupid. When I did the flying school back in 2006 I remember Toreno calling me trying to cheer me up when I had failed the flying school for the 50th time and he said something along these lines:

 

You try - and you fail, you try - and you fail again. But the real failure is when you stop trying.

 

It has been buggering me for 4 years now and I want to end it. What exatly did Toreno say? I went through the GXT archive, the search function in the editor is crap, so I may have missed it but I am pretty sure I went through all the lines and didn't see it there.

 

What really confuses me is that I am 100% sure I heard this line in GTA back in 2006, and I am alomost certain it was said by Toreno during the flying school. I have even re-played the school twice and had a few phone calls from him, but not this one.

 

Can anyone help me please or at least re-call if you've heard this line?

Nah, there are random phone calls from Toreno, it's completely random. I don't know what to say, just keep trying?

Did you try to check different versions? R* might have removed it in the latest patches.

What are you talking about, there was only one patch for SA, and it was only for V1(to remove the Hot Coffee and minor bug fixes)-there is no patch for V2 and V3.

 

I have V2, and I still get the Phone calls like that from Toreno at random, it happens if you start the Flight School, but not finish it before going on to something else-and it will happen at random. I think their are 3 or 4 different things he says when he calls(hence 3 or 4 phone calls). Just a heads up.

I don't know, he called me about 5 times and in the last one he said that it will be his "Last inspirational call". I failed the flying school mission 10 more times and spend some time cruising around and haven't had a call from him.

That occured to me, but I think I had the same version back then. I remember that the patch was released when I only started San Fierro missions, so I must have had the patched version by the time I got to the desert.

Yeah, I had 4 or 5 calls from him, but not this one. Last time I did this missions to re-trigger the calls he didn't use this phrase either.

 

I just feel like I have completely gone nuts, remembering hearing (and seeing in subtitles) this phrase, but being unable to make it re-appear or find it in the files

I forgot SA only had 2 versions. Im used to playing games that have tons, like for example, 1.3, 1.5, etc.

GTA:SA has 3 versions, Only one patch for V1.

But there are Editions for different Countries.

Is it possible that it is in the language file.

I have V2 English/USA. I failed the school missions a lot (on the PS2 4 hours a day for 2 weeks, during the first play through) and never got any calls other than reminders to do the school.

I now have the PC (also Version 2 English/USA) and yesterday tried failing 25 times at various points in the testing, nothing, no calls at all.

At what test did you get the calls?

Once you start the flying school tests, if you stop and go off doing something else before you finish them, then Toreno WILL call you at random times, and say stuff about failure and to not give up and stuff like that. (But remember, that unlike IV, you must be outside of a vehicle to get the calls.) I have not got these on PC yet, probably because I use Dem's Mission Passer to pass the flying school and NOE, since I stink at flying. But I have got these several times when I was playing the PS2 Greatest Hits version(which I think is the equivalent to PC V2.? Just a heads up.

 

So, to test it, try starting one of the tests, and then exit out of flight school, and pretty soon you should get a call from Toreno.

I have 1.01 version (original EU version + patch), but I believe it uses the same American text file. I did not use mods or cheats until I beat the game.

 

When I was playing the game for the first time I remember that I attempted a few missions in the flying school and then got stuck at Circling the Airstrip. Tried it at least 20 times (and 60 at most) and had a number of calls from Toreno telling me not to give up. I don't remember what he said in each of them though. I then did the other Flying school missions and eventually completed it. Toreno called me at some point between the first mission and the completion of the school and said something like "Carl! You try and you fail, you try and you fail, but the real failure is when you stop trying". or "You try and you fail, you try again - and you fail again. But the real failure is if you stop trying" etc but I am pretty sure he did not use the word "failure".

 

I then attempted the flying school again last autumn hoping to re-trigger the call and never had it (but I had a few others).

 

I downloaded a save game with Yay-Ka-Boom-Boom being the last mission passed yesterday. Did a few missions for Toreno, went to the flying school, tried to re-create the events of my very first game by passing the first few school missions then failing at circling the airstrip, went to SF to do some random missions like I originally did. I had 4 or 5 calls from Toreno at different points, the last one where he said "This is my last inspirational speech for you". And indeed, I haven't had another call from him. I failed the missions about 10 more times, did some side missions, went back to the airstrip - still, nothing.

 

All of the calls I had last time were during me "trying" to do the circle around the airstrip. Mind you, he called quite frequently, every 10-15 minutes real time and it was over 2 hours since his last call now.

 

I used the same DVD I used originally... The computer was changed though, but this can hardly matter.

 

 

 

I will try and finish the school, "failing" at random points, hoping he'll call me back, but I was unable to find the mission script on the Internet, so this leaves me unsure when to expect this call. Although as I said I had most of my troubles with the circling the airstrip missions suring my first game run.
