KPalicz
I hope this doesn't seem spammy, it isn't at all, I just figured that with GTA coming up often in the news in reference to this court case, that you guys would be interested in doing something to stop games like GTA from getting banned. Arnold Schwarzenegger, '80s action star and governor of California, has passed a law banning the sale of "violent" video games to anyone under the age of 18. This is more than just enforcing the ESRB ratings; this is banning all minors from buying all games that could be considered "violent". This law has been challenged and is now on its way to being tested in the Supreme Court. The National Youth Rights Association is currently working on an amicus brief to oppose this law, and we need help from the rest of the gaming community. We are collecting testimonies on the social, artistic, and especially political value of video games to prove to the court that their distribution should be protected under the First Amendment. The media has been demonizing gamers ever since someone decided that Doom caused Columbine. Getting the Supreme Court to strike down this law and admit the value of video games would be a huge step forward in fighting these misconceptions. This is our chance to clear the name of video games and protect the First Amendment rights of young gamers. This could be the first step in government regulation of video games that could affect all gamers, regardless of age. Our brief is coming along, but we really do need your help. The more testimonies we have, the better our chances of winning over the court. For more information and to submit your testimony, visit: http://blog.youthrights.org/2010/08/11/sch..._us_fight_back/

The fact that we are even talking about something as trivial as VG's in the government means the gov has their priorities SERIOUSLY out of whack. That said, point them to Red Dead Redemption or other story heavy VG's and tell them that is not art and deserves to be treated with respect. Also, they worry about the economy but here we are decreasing the economy by legislating the economy. I just call bullcrap.

By "these people" do you mean the Supreme Court or folks on the GTA forum? Basically I imagine people here know GTA better than most, and you'd be able to give very specific and detailed feedback regarding what in GTA is political. But it isn't a problem here (in the US) so there is zero need to ban it. Crime has been dropping while violent video games have been increasing. The reason why the government is adressing video games is because it is becoming a problem. Look at south korea. On a scale of how big a problem is where does video games place? I can think of far more pertinent societal problems than videogames. Government Over-Spending, Economy, The war in Iraq/pakistan, failure of MJ prohibition*, prison overcrowding*, judicial system clogging*, Industrial/Ideological Lobbying in the gov. To think of a few more, Problems with binge drinking among college students, Politicians not actually giving a crap about the voters and what they believe should be changed, the very real problem of running out of oil and finding ways to replace oil, Big Pharma screwing us all. So please don't try this VG's are a problem crap, we have FAR more important ones. We should be worrying about those WAY before we worry about a generally harmless past-time. *These are connected BTW... Spaghetti Cat
Isn't GTA:IV already rated M? Am I missing something here? You have to be over, what, 18 or so? That's like saying that a few kids got in to see a rated R film, so now we gotta ban all R rated films. Kinda silly... No Image Available

xrk
We already have this in the uk and look at our youth. I found from personal experence that people that have no interest in games are generally the ones into trouble (violent kind) more than the other way around. but parents will always need something to blame for them f*cking up their kids, be it games or weed or whatever else. I think the problem is people.. ban 'em imo tbh ffs

WHAT!?
This is going to turn into a rant about parents in general, but.. eh. Personally I don't believe the government should be able to apply a ban to any product or service. The tax revenue is to valuable. Especially in this economy, not to mention the profit to the private sector which in turn creates more jobs. The government needs to be focused on our foreign policy and our unemployment, but thats a different topic. Anyway, I have to say that even though I don't agree with legislation as an answer for uninformed parents being afraid that the video game boogie man is turning their kids into mindless killing machines, I also don't consider it a threat to me personally or the sale of those games. Anything below the rating of "M" is already not to be purchased by a minor. Then you have the even stricter "AO" rating. Stores are already obligated to not sell these games to those under 18 years of age. If they are caught selling to a minor they get a decent little fine to pay. At the end of the day the responsibility still lands where it belongs. The parent. The parent raises their child, not the god damn state. If they are not responsible enough to teach their kids right from wrong, fact from fiction, and pay attention to what they are doing then its their failure. Not the governments. The fact that they can't seem to control their offspring should not effect how I spend my entertainment dollar due to unnecessary legislation. The sad thing is we the people ask to have these things imposed upon us, and most are to stupid to realize that we are in fact asking to have basic freedoms taken away on a regular basis. In short take responsibility for yourselves and those who live under your roof. Stop making the rest of us pay for your lazy ass. Thanks. On the side of the topic... They will never ban an industry that brings in more money per year then Hollywood. So let them have their play time. All we can really do is roll our eyes at it. Its the same sh*t the record industry when through with the Parental Advisory warnings in the early 90's. Parents get a warm fuzzy, and the kids still get the damn music anyway. Rebel
I honestly don't see the harm in banning under 18's from buying games. If they wanted it that much then what's wrong with asking their parents to go out and buy it for them or something? I'm pretty sure 80% of parents don't give a damn what age the game is and they'd buy it for them no questions asked. I know here in the UK its apparently ''illegal'' for you to buy an 18 rated game if you aren't 18 but I've never heard of anyone I know to be stopped buying an 18 game when they aren't that age. E.A.B.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the law. Less little pricks playing those kind of games? That sounds fantastic. Now, I'll let you kids get back to discussing this traumatic turn of events. I rode my bike 2 miles to a gamestop to buy a game. I was 17, it was an M-Rated game. Needless to say, it was pointless. Stupid, too, cause I've been playing Games like Turok since I was 12. Maybe I'm stupid, but I never made the connection between real life and video games. There was never any question that it wasn't real, and no argument. Hearing the 'GAMES DESTROY YOUTH' talk later on kinda surprised me. But my mom never had any problems with it, and my dad loved watching me play Mortal Kombat. I understand kids get a bad rap sometimes simply because they're under 18, which is totally unfair. But I looked up this organization, and wikipedia says their old logo was something like 'the last civil rights movement', which is just laughable. Anyway, I'll sign it, sure. Nobody knows you better than Mom, so let her decide.
