Canofceleri
I heard an intriguing bit about this album on the net and decided to seek it out. Very hard to find the album, but it is on youtube. Never heard anything quite like this guy, I've listened to avant garde hip hop before but this is definitely the most out there sh*t especially if you listen to the whole album and get a grasp for its impressive range. This guy is some sort of genius indeed. Too bad the album tanked commercially and he's scarcely been heard of since.
meta187
I wanted to give all these tracks a proper listen before I made any comments, so sorry for the late reply, Cand. Initial impressions listening to this would be that this is the sort of spacey artistic indulgence that had artists distancing themselves from the openly poetic Native Tongue Golden era style of Hip Hop. It is certainly all over the place but you're right the tracks have a lot of range and some of the techniques and sounds employed on these tracks are way ahead of their time. You can hear a bit of the downtempo and menacing sounds of a Jef Jux track in here, the black rock sound of Mos Def's, The New Danger and the unapologetic stoner spaciness of Kid Cudi. I can see why it flopped commercially, no one was doing this sort of thing in 1992 but I believe something like this with a few production updates would do better in the decidedly more diverse and open listening market we have today. The spoken word piece, Love, Lies and Lifetime Cries feels pretty typical but the use of sythesizers in the final minute lend it a lot of power and make it feel very reminiscent of Seal's debut album which I was a big fan of at the time.
