Do you have the latest drivers installed?

This is really strange, a few things I could think of are

~ It's possible your hardware is not recognized, which takes us back to installing the latest drivers

~ You might have some applications running in the background which are hogging resources

If you wanna go ahead and look into these and post back with more info, that would be great.

Did you change any hardware recently without reinstalling the OS afterwards? Which OS are you using?

Sorry for stealing your topic, but I wonder how can I get GTA IV to recognise my hardware? It did it fine on Windows 7, not so good on XP :|

Hardware

?

Video Adapter: ?

etc.

i have the very same problem. running it on a laptop with geforce g330m in it, i5 intel core processor (system handles this as a quad if im right), 3g ram, and still the game is lagging. funny thing, i had an asus before with worse video card and the game was ok in 800x600. i installed the latest nvidia drivers and have win 7 32 bit and directx 11. and still it is lagging, but only when i touch the keyboard and try to drive the vehicles or turn left-righ with Nico. any tips?

I am using windows 7 64 bit, the only hardware I installed without reinstalling the OS is my graphics card and that was about half a year ago.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your graphics card is a bit lacking in power. Load up fraps and tells the exact framerates you get and also run the in game benchmark, it's not a very good benchmark but at least it gives us a standard point of reference.

You're likely referring to the VRAM usage, but having 1GB of VRAM on a 4650 is rather pointless.

Bottomline is your video crap is barely better than a 9500GT and you're unlikely to see better framerates unless you upgrade. That's my assessment given the data at hand.

I am in the same boat.

My system specs are Core 2 Quad 2.8, 4GB DDR2, HD5770 1GB GDDR5 and even when every single graphics option is set to low I get about 20 frames per second and often lower (according to fraps) and its lagging really poorly.

Its more of a stutter and not just low framerate if you know what I mean, got the latest update patch, don't have GTAIV installed and other games that I could possibly argue look better and/or are bigger games run extremely well, mafia 2 demo for instance runs well @ 1080p with most graphics on high settings and that game does look like its offering better visuals and physics.. About 50-60 fps fraps reports (lets not start a mafia vs gta debate !!)

All my drivers are updated I am sure although I will re check this in a little while when I get the time but I don't think my PC is completely to blame as it does run other stuff with ease, Just Cause 2 runs very well..

I have done the "can your system handle this" thing and my PC can easily cope with GTA on high settings according to that and my system far exceeds the minimum requirements.

I would really appreciate a solution to this that does not involve what I would most likely see as an unnecessary upgrade.

I bought GTAIV on console because my pc couldn't handle it back then, now I have a pc that is certainly more powerful than any games console out there and I get an absolutely terrible experience and its absolutely unplayable and I completely regret my purchase.. sad.gif

Please someone help me and the others out who are having these problems, hopefully this is just a stupid school boy error or something on my part and can be fixed easily but I have no clue what to do.

if i were to get a new graphic carded what would you suggest

Dave, you're best off making a separate thread as you do seem to have a genuine problem because the 5770 is a decent mid range card.

Fish, tell us what your budget is first.

I'm having a problem like that.

Framerate is not continuous...shows intermittent hiccups during the gameplay. But these hiccups are not slowdown, just the opposite, they are "fast-up", short time accelerated framerate mercie_blink.gif

I´ve tried a partial solution : two lines in Commandline.txt : framelimit 1 and refreshrate 37 (half refresh rate of my monitor - 75 Hz).

It´s no good yet, but it´s playable at least. sad.gif

System : Phenom II 955 + 4GB RAM + HD4850 + Win7-64

Game : All settings in High, except Night Shadow is Medium, sliders 50% all, Vsync ON <--- help a lot.

May I ask how much VRAM are you using? If it's over what you physically have then it's not surprising you have problems.

If his 4850 is 512 mb then hes definitely over the usage.

(um no im not an ATI knowledge base...i suck at ATI cards but i just guessed he might have 512 VRAM.)

Yeah ! My 4850 is 512MB blush.gif

But I think my problem is due VGA usage.

I´ve installed a little program called "ATI Tray Tools", and it says the GPU usage during the game.

When it reaches 96% or above, the hiccups start. Lower than 96%, framerate keeps steady.

So, I´ve reduced Mirror and Water to Medium and that helps a little.

I´ve overclocked the VGA too (only 10%)...and that helps too.

I´m using -availablevidmem 1.6 to get some extra virtual video memory to the High Textures.

The game is very playable now. Some hiccups rarely. I intend buy a decent video card when the new generation of ATI arrives.

unfortunately due to you using a laptop, your problems are very different than discussed here

Sometimes a really bad virus can f*ck up the performance and you have no other option to buy/steal/borrow a new laptop.

Have you patched the game? I used patch 3 and my stuttering problem was solved.
