Sand3
I've been trying to find a way to open some .lua terrain maps snagged from a Wii game and after a lot of google-searching and browsing through more generic game-mod forums, I was pointed to here and the GTA Map Viewer. First, I guess, is Map Viewer set up to support .lua or have I been misdirected? If not, then... I just downloaded mapviewer-0.5a4 (am I out of date? is there a newer version?) and opened it, and am kind of baffled. It's just giving me a blank, black window with no menus and the only indication that it's doing something and not frozen is the FPS number changing constantly. What am I supposed to do now? I tried dragging and dropping a .lua into it from win-explorer, but it didn't like that. I'm getting no response from the f-keys that the readme tells me to use. Please excuse me if I seem a bit deficient, I'm a graphics person and don't know much about code. This is my first time trying to mess with a .lau, or really leaving the safety of my modeling programs at all. My goal here is to find a way to export the terrain in this .lua to something I can eventually bring into Blender (probably having to go through a few other formats first.) If anybody can help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. Edited August 8, 2010 by Sand3
Shadow-Link
First welcome to the forums! So just to be sure you want to load the map of a wii game and put this in GTA? If you want it in GTA IV you're out of luck as there are no tools available to edit the IV map yet. The GTA Map Viewer was made to view the SA (and I think III/VC but I am not sure about that) map. and .lua was used as some sort of scripting language to have a bit more control of the viewer (camera changing etc). So I think the wii lua files won't work in there as the map viewer is expecting the usual gta ide/ipl/model files. I am not sure what the .lua files of the wii contain you might want to post a small part of it here? That way we can look at it and maybe help you understand this a little better (no full files as that might be against the copyright rules). Sand3
I wasn't actually planning on bringing it into GTA, I just found my way here when I was looking for software that could possibly open the files I had, my goal is actually to convert them to geometry that I can edit. GritEngine
I don't see that happening, and perhaps, maybe, you could take some screen shots and just model it out. yourself based on it. Unless you are planning to mod that game itself? If it's lua, it might not be a model. It might just be definitions, in which case, it is probably some definitions for a terrain engine from the wii game in question, and the "models" possibly exist only at run time and perhaps within bitmaps. Either way, why not make your own terrain? What engine do you use already?
spaceeinstein
and I think III/VC but I am not sure about that It supported both III and VC, one of the main advantage of this tool. I wish Steve worked on it more.
