bobgtafan
Hey everyone, I'm about to go on a trip to New York and was wondering if anyone has been to Canal Street and Chinatown in general. The reason I ask isn't because of the neighborhood itself per say but the products you can buy there for cheap. Does anyone have any stories of things they've gotten there? Thanks. unopescio
Dont go looking for anything good quality down there. Just about the only thing worthwhile is the 5 t shirts for $10.
bobgtafan
O yea I know it's the place to go for counterfiet goods, so all you found where t-shirts? Damn I heard I could get a "rolex" for 15 bucks down there.
unopescio
.... Its $15 because its a piece of molded plastic, not a rolex. Things are cheap there because they're garbage.

I used to work right over in Chinatown. If you want to spend very little money: Get a Vietnamese sandwich at Bahn Mi Saigon @ 138 Mott St. It'll be about 3.75, a great deal. Go to the Fried Dumpling shop on Mosco St and get 5 dumplings and a pint of sweet and sour soup for two dollars. Canal St sells counterfeit DVDS, cheap clothing, cheap toys, etc. It isn't that exciting. Lots of cheap crap that will break easily. There are some cool Chinese markets on/right off of Canal St that are worth looking at. Go see the High Line in the time you're looking for cheap crap on Canal St. Pretty cool huge new park built on top of an old railway.

Just like most Flee Markets and middle-eastern bazaar's. You've been shopping at a middle-eastern bazaar? If not I'm curious as to how you know the quality of the products there. The bazaars there are actually world-renowned for their excellent quality rugs, sandals, scarves and sunglasses. They are also known for their great fruit, vegetables, meats as well as make-up and hair products. and lol @ everyone who thinks the things sold there (Canal St.) fall apart within a week. I bought a fake iPod while on a trip to New York 5 years ago, and though I've since switched to my iPhone, it's still working perfectly fine to this day. I also know a bunch of girls from my school who bought handbags while there and they've used them for years without them ripping. The only time you can really tell the difference is if you put them to the test (i.e. purposely try to rip them [meaning a guy using all his strength, or if they regularly post on a message board, three guys using all their strength] or fill them with excess weight [i.e. upwards of about 7kg]). Of course you're going to find various levels of quality, but from my experience Canal St. is generally better from the rest of the city. Just make sure to buy from the Nigerians there and not the Chinese
JOSEPH X
Yeah went there last year. Did some haggling for some NYPD sh*t with a chinese guy "I give you 1 dollar" "WAAAH 1 DORRAR??"

I didn't want to sound gay, but when this thread started I wanted to add that canal street is pretty much just good for knock off purses and handbags. AlfieWilRus
I hate New York. I wouldn't go to any poor district in New York because when I was 16, I went there with my family and some assholes mugged my mom at f*ckING GUN POINT! Who the hell scares and already scared Indonesian lady?
Frankie_Scarlet
The only thing I really got out of Chinatown back then were the Gundam model kits I used to collect but only because that was the most convenient place for me to get them--not so anymore as more and more kits are no longer being produced. o.o
jimmy.
and lol @ everyone who thinks the things sold there (Canal St.) fall apart within a week. I bought an "I Love NY" t-shirt last weekend in a tourist area for 4 bucks. I didn't want to look like a tourist, but I wanted a cheap shirt since I was sweating and my shirt smelled. Anyway, all of the text started peeling off the shirt instantly. It was like someone wrote the text in medical gauze tape. The heart was the only part that didn't peel off, but it peeled off easily after it went through the dryer. At least now I have a tee shirt for 4 dollars and I don't look like a tourist. Some stuff may be constructed adequately, but many times you get what you pay for and there is a lot of poorly constructed sh*t being sold on the street to tourists. So caveat emptor on Canal St and other tourist areas.
