Death's Minstrel
Ways to enhance your frame-rate in GTAIV, and take loads of stress off your video card. 1. Reduce water quality. When you lower or increase water quality, the numbers showing your card usage may tell you that its only a minuscule and completely unimportant difference, but those numbers lie! Just set your water quality to the lowest setting and you will love the difference. Besides, the water looks perfectly fine even on low quality. 2. Foggy weather. If you have anything like the simple native trainer or a cheat for changing the weather, foggy weather is the way to go. Also freeze the weather there if you can. This takes an amazing load off your video card like you wouldn't believe. I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but it really works. This can also seem to increase video quality if you have low detail and/or distance settings. If you have any other tips for enhancing frame-rate feel free to post them! I'll give you a cookie! P.S. If there is already another place I can post this, please notify my and I will move this there. Edited August 4, 2010 by Death's Minstrel
OverTheBelow
Most people have a CPU bottleneck with this game.. not the graphics card. My card only gets to about 50% where CPU is locked to 100% most of the time at around 30fps.
GTA3Freak-2001
The water quality is really only going to help in areas near or on the water, very true about the fog although only if you have a video card that isn't the best. As has been said the CPU is where most people's problem lies moreso then their video card.
LazlowsucksiloveslutS
If you play with foggy weather all the time,it ruins the beauty of the city.I used to lower shadow and detail qualities to 1,performance was remarkably better, but city and vehicles looked sh*ttier.I don't know,to play with great detail and huge lag or sh*tty detail and good performance ? One thing that increases performance is increasing the size of virtual memory.
Weirdo.
One thing that increases performance is increasing the size of virtual memory. I got that tip from someone on YouTube, and it made both computers I tried it on crash.

Death's Minstrel
The water quality is really only going to help in areas near or on the water... This actually helps more than you would think. There is water pretty much everywhere in gtaiv, even in the center of the islands the water isn't far away. Unless you have an extremely low view/detail distance, gtaiv keeps a good amount of space in your memory. Plus if it makes even a bit of difference (which it makes a lot) isn't it worth a try? Like I said the water looks perfectly fine even on low settings. It doesn't look like sh*t, trust me. Especially if you have the extreme graphics mod. With that you can still have things looking awesome with good frame-rate.
Merlena
GTA IV = Bad bad bad bad port. Bad bad bad bad port = CPU hungry game. CPU hungry game = GTA IV. Get over it people. If Rockstar made their game like most games, you'd have your GPU handling it all, like it's supposed to.
Weirdo.
GTA IV = Bad bad bad bad port. Bad bad bad bad port = CPU hungry game. CPU hungry game = GTA IV. So the short and simple equation is... GTA IV = GTA IV?
Zedo Mann
Most of my choppiness is in areas of LC with lots of buildings (lots of textures to show). Also when I am flying in a Helicopter over the city it's very choppy.
