Typhus
Rubbish episode. Casual xenophobia towards the British. Bart portrayed as a loser (Which is just f*cking depressing). And precious little Lisa Simpson again being the centre of attention because she feels things so much more deeply than any living human ever. Plus, she gives money to sick African land-mine orphans with polio. And with a mere word she makes the birds sing in the trees. I mean, someone like that just has the right to ditch their husband, right? F*cking radical feminist agenda. And if you disagree, cast your mind to the episode in which Homer apologises after Marge runs him over. Or maybe to the dozens of episodes in which Homer gets thrown out of the house he pays for. How about Marge dressing her kids up to guilt her husband into not having an affair he had no intention of having in the first place. And then there's the time she guilts her own son into taking drugs. How about the time she disowned Bart for stealing a video game, despite knowing that the kid was a complete delinquent. Eavesdropping on your daughters prayers? Perfectly acceptable. Emotionally manipulating your child so they conform to your religious views? A-OK. The show is a piece of sh*t sometimes, it really is. I was always suspicious of and disliked Marge, especially how she often persues her own (often depleted) sense of purpose and pride beyond her husband and even own kids' well-being. But I never can remember all those examples you mentioned - I guess she really is a piece of sh*t. Though I guess that is the writer's attempts to portray the family's dysfunctionality, and in turn reflect the magnitude of Homer's many self-sacrifices and his innocence. OT: Yeah, I'm an old hag. Otter
Let's take a moment to remember that the Simpsons is a parody of the American family. Never once were we encouraged to be the Simpsons; every member of that family is dysfunctional and would probably end up in prison. Now, in the case of this episode, let's not forget that this is Lisa's fantasy - no wonder she's the 'successful' one. That was all part of the joke. We all know that Lisa Simpson, in real life, would get knocked up in the 12th grade and lose all aspirations of greatness before she even turned 20. I mean, they had a whole episode which culminated in them saying that if you were a man in that family, you were a f*cking idiot and doomed to failiure. Whereas the women were just naturally superior and always successful in anything they did. What the f*ck was that? What kind of f*cked up, bullsh*t message is that? Otter
I think the mistake you're making, Typhus, is in that assuming The Simpsons is trying to spread any sort of message on the way things should be. Do not forget, either, that Homer Simpson is the posterboy for accidental success. They own their house, for god's sake. That's luxury compared to most of us. I would humbly ask everyone in this thread to donate a few dollars each so we can get Typhus a capable therapist. ...OK, maybe more than a few dollars each. This will have to be one hell of a therapist. Speaking of Britain being insulted in this episode; for some reason Hugh spells 'honour' without the u in this episode. That ruined the episode for me.
