infidelcompany Posted July 31, 2010 Share Posted July 31, 2010 Hi, i'm playing GTA IV with: Texture Quality: High, Shadows on day: High, Shadows on night: Off, Reflection Resolution: high, Water qualiy: Very High, Definition: On, Vsync: ON, View Distance: 25, Detail Distance: 31, Vehicle Density: 80, Anisostropic filter: 16x, Resolution 1920x1080 60hz. This is the configuration that is applied when i select the "Automatic Configuration" option. With this configuration i have a fluid game with 40-60 fps and 780 memory mb occuped. But if i increase the valor of the options, as reflection, shadows or view/detail distance , at the highest level, i've a performance degradation with 15-30 fps despite the memory occuped is only 1200 mb of 2000mb . The world will charge much more slowly, as if I hadn't a fast processor, but i have a I7 980x!!!! I have installed all the patch, incluse the 1.7 and the 1.6 catalyst driver.... what must i do for play at the highest settings with this game? Marcin6 Posted July 31, 2010 Share Posted July 31, 2010 For now there is no PC to run this game smoothl on max settings R* saying : "We tested similar settings on a fast core I7 with 2 GTX 480's in SLI and seeing a pretty consistant 30fps. The hardware to run this game at FULL MAX settings at 60 fps does not yet exist but the game is coded such that when it does it will take full advantage." E.R Posted July 31, 2010 Share Posted July 31, 2010 You only have 1GB of Vram usable, thats the way CF/SLI works as the data is mirrored in the memory for each GPU and that amount is 1GB on the standard 5970, and 2GB on the 4GB edition of 5970 but that card is rare and very expensive and 2x5870 E6 2GB is the a better buy due to internal limitations of 5970. You pretty mutch found out some of the resons why i dont have 5970 any more, at least SLI scale something when activate card 2 and 3 and dont act up. Also 980X is not that well used in this game anyway as 8 threads is decent used but 12 is not better as it should be, only thing is that CPU-usage goes down instead of performance go up as repons of the CPU power we offer the game with 12 threads possible so even GTA 4 has its limits due to lack of patch of code to change this bottleneck. Best way to keep over 30fps is to keep vram usage below 1GB/1024MB. and dot use heavy things that eat perfomance. Pretty mutch trial and error to find your golden settings combo. The alternative is to go green and 2xGTX460 or max it out with 2xGTX480 that can max this game out in 1920x1200 that is more demanding then 1920x1080. I do not regret the change to be able to max games out without lowering AA/AF at all. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you read all the posts then you'll understand that only 1GB of actual VRAM is available. I won't repeat what was already by someone very clearly regarding that. Although the game recognises 2000Mb video memory, this is an error (unless you have the 2 x 2Gb version of the 5970). This game works better with a single card, so try disabling crossfire.
