huxi
hi..........im looking to buy a msi gx740 or asus g73jh-x1........for modern games especially gta iv.........both of them have i7 720qm processor and ati 5870...........but hte problem is since gta iv loves quad ,which both of laptops have,i7 720qm has low clock speed which is 1.6ghz..................i wanted to know that would it be enough or not...........if it is .than how would it perform on games which require dual core like assassin creed II,prototype and splinter cell conviction and yeah crysis as well.........plzzz help!!!!!!!!im also looking at i7 620m because it has higher clock speed about 2,3ghz ......so which would be better i7 720qm or i7 620m only for gaming??? Lodis
If you get the i7 620M, you won't get any more than 20 fps in GTA IV unless you lower all settings and even then it will lag like hell. The i7 720qm may have a 1.6 Ghz clock rate but it is not as simple as that and it is very powerful too. If an application needs 2 Cores, it will Turbo Boost to 2.4 Ghz and disable the other 2 Cores and for GTA IV, it will use all 4 Cores at a clock rate of 1.73 Ghz on each Core. The i7 720qm has been replaced by the i7 740QM which is slightly faster and I suggest you try to go with that. I have the i7 820qm in my laptop and the Nvidia GTX 285M and I play GTA IV all high settings and sliders at 60 at 1600 x 900 resolution at 30 - 40 fps. With patch 1.0.04 I was getting a constant 40 - 45 fps and 55 fps in the benchmark with those settings though. I stay on the latest patch even though it performs a little less because I like the shadows and the fact that I can snipe car passengers far away. Note that I got less performance in GTA IV with the ATI 5870 than I did with my Nvidia GTX 285M but I think that was an ATI Driver issue. If the most recent ATI Drivers have been improved then you might be ok. I know some one who has the i7 720qm with the ATI 5870 and they get about 40 - 45 fps but their settings are a lot lower than mine, for example 25 Vs my 60 in the sliders. I also recommend you take a look at the Sager W860CU.

Jigglyass
The quad can go into turbo mode and raise the frequency significantly, as long as you play on it while its plugged into the power supply. Also, disable any power saving features in control panel when its plugged in, for maximum performance.
Lodis
have u tried any game which requires dual core like splinter cell conviction? The vast majority of games are coded for Dual Core but even an old 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo paired with a decent GPU is enough for games like that because the GPU is where the bottleneck is most of the time. You won't have any problems with any Dual Core games and in many cases, having an extra core allows the background OS activities, Antivirus or anything else to leave more CPU time for the game because they use the extra Core instead of the same Core the game is using. The cost of my laptop depends where you are, I got mine in the UK. The Sagers are significantly more expensive than the Asus and probably cost more than the MSI as well. Many users have had over heating problems or other issues with the Asus as well.
