Reaver.
Hey everyone, I'm new. I've loved the GTA series since the first one, so I decided to join this forum. I have one more year in 6th Form, then I'm going to go to University. I was wondering which option I should pick. I've been a huge fan of computer games since I was like 5, I'm 17 now and doing Games Design, I believe would be most appropriate as I reckon I'd work harder because it's what I enjoy. I've also wanted to be a cop since I was young, and working for the law would also be good as you get fast-tracked, meaning you usually get picked over someone who has had no experience. My parents think I should do Criminology because they believe there are more sectors you can work in, and that you are more likely to get a job. I personally would prefer Games Design as it is something I've always been interested in and would always be happy to learn & do new things. I've heard that Games Design was one of 'those courses' where you don't really achieve anything at the end of it as there's not many jobs going and you need to really stand out to your competitors when going for the same job. I was wondering what you guys think I should do. I'm currently looking up the Games sector, so if you could give me any ideas/information I'd be really grateful. Thanks. Reaver.
Sorry for the double post, I forgot to mention I have never tried to do any sort of modification or using any 3D programs, that shouldn't change anything should it?
JOSEPH X
You should do what YOU want to do. Remember, you're the one that's going to be doing it for a large part of your life, and if you don't like it at least you can say it was your own choice. DeeperRed
I wouldn't choice game design down to the fact that there are a 100's of different jobs in the games market and they are all very specific. There are writters, programers, concept artisits, artisit, moddelers, event programers, engine developers etc etc. A course entitled "Game design" sounds like sh*t to be honest. If you want to work in the game industry you have to choices the part you want to work in. If you want to come up with the idea well then thats writting, if you want to make the core of the game thats programing, if you want to be a company leader well that would be a bussiness degree and setting up a company. While I completely agree, and thanks for your reply, I want to make sure there'd be a future for me as I'm happy to do Criminology if it's alot more likely to get me a job. @DeeperRed, I don't think it's called 'Games Design', I just didn't know what to call it. Do you want to lead the production, over view you the entire proccess ?
Reaver.
I don't necessarily want to be the boss or anything, of course I wouldn't mind, but preferably join an existing company. Teesside looks good.
DeeperRed
I suggest you ring up some games companies and ask them what they look for, what degrees they reccomend.
Punk-in-Drublic
Some girl I know is studying criminology, she says its really interesting. She gets to go to prisons and visit some of the prisoners.
Robinski
I can't speak much for the university's courses themselves, as I'm avoiding it at all costs, but if you do consider Teesside University make sure you come up and have a look around the area. There are some places around here you really do not want to end up living in and it'd pay off to make sure you avoid those. I live in Teesside btw. As for your choice, personally I'd go for criminology as it's more likely to yield a wider range of job opportunities than games design (or whatever it is). There's an Open day in October so we'll look around the area & the University then. Cheers.
Otter
Keep in mind that you're most likely going to have to move in order to get into games design. Or, at least, to get a good job in games design. On the plus side, however - you can come over here to Vancouver. The best city in the goddamned world.
Sunrise Driver
Also game design is safer than the police work.

JoeyLeone25
I know somebody who has done both courses. My friend did 'Games Design' (BA) at Sheffield Hallam University, completed the three year course, and found that the industry was that competitive that he decided to go back to University at Hallam and attain a degree in 'Computer Science' (BSc) and since then he has gone on to do a PhD and has travelled the world. While my friends sister did 'Criminology' at Nottingham University and she loved it. However it took her around two (maybe three years?) to get through the preliminary red-tape to start a position with the Metropolitan Police. Which she is hoping she will be able to do in the next year-or-so, as the Police nowadays are apparently an incredibly selective body. Either way, go to University, enjoy yourself, don't piss your degree down the sick-infested toilet, because you can enjoy yourself and pass (yet, some of my mates still think I'm making that up...) and decide what you want to do afterwards. People forget that you can change courses relatively easily, or do a degree one after the other (ala my friend in the first experience). Urban Legend
Some criminals are becoming increasingly dumb while the games nowadays are harder to produce.
Lithium
I have a degree in criminology right now. The course is really interesting and consists of psych, sociology, interpersonal communication, law and self defense classes. When I was in the course we got to tour a police academy, federal prison and provincial prison (which I ended up working in for 2 years or so). I would suggest giving this a shot as there are always going to be people f*cking up, therefore making jobs for police officers, prison guards, sherriffs, lawyers etc.. I'm currently looking at applying for police academy, and hopefully will be a cop within the next couple of years. I'd say do whatever you want to do, but especially in the States, there will always be jobs in the field since crime is through the roof! Good luck man, and welcome to the forums. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.
