For the 3 or 4 people that are still playing:

 

I believe I have a location, but not the tree. The location, at least in my opinion, could be in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico....which is about 60 air miles west of Roswell. The name of the town certainly fits this whole game we've been playing as well. Also, to fit in with the whole alien/u.f.o/space vibe, there's a newly opened space port just to the east of town called Spaceport America and has gained an Area 51 type status.....a lot of experimental aircraft are tested out there, and it will be the first commercial spaceport in America in the coming years.

 

Here's an area I found in town that looks like the background mountain range, and has had me scratching my head for a while (look at the center of the picture where the white low lying buildings are):
