Shylock
Ok, so here is the deal. I have a bunch of stuff on my old computer that has pretty much sat in a corner for the past 2 years. I flipped it on the other night to try and retrieve a bunch of old saved files but it does not recognize the keyboard. I plugged in a completely different keyboard and it also failed to recognize. Now here comes the barrage of questions... Can I just unplug the keyboard and just use a mouse? Haven't tried this method yet because I don't have a mouse, so if this will work I will ask around and snag up an old one from someone. Assuming I can't just use a mouse, how can I bypass this? It makes no sense that the computer tells me no keyboard is recognized, and tells me F1 to continue F2 to go to settings... And the final question, is there anyway to pretty much plug the tower into my laptop and use my laptop screen/keyboard/trackpad to navigate the old computer? I guess I have one more, any suggestions for a cheap external? Or a cheap external enclosure (to make an internal HDD become and external USB HDD)? Thanks in advance hombres. Gramps
Can you please confirm if your using a PS/2 or USB keyboard/mouse combination ?
Tornado Rex
Chances are you can't just use the mouse. Most computers will let you use just a keyboard, but not just a mouse. If you're just looking to pull some files off the hard drive just slap it into your current computer as a slave drive and you'll have full access to it. Copy whatever you want and take it back out. ~ Proud Supporter of the Child's Play Charity! | GTANET + Child's Play ~

But that wouldn't resolve his issue; it just bypasses the problem ..

Shylock
Ok, don't currently have a mouse but have used both the plug and usb. Keyboard is the plug kind (non usb). And pulling the old drive to put in new computer is out of question as I now have a laptop. However, if there is an adapter of sorts that'll turn the sata wires into usb I could get what I want onto my laptop and just toss the old hdd. Thanks for the input guys. luceberg
Just google hard drive enclosure. There are lots of cheap ones about. Just make sure you know if the hard drive is sata, as older ones may be ide, which need a different connection. If the drive still works, why bin it? useful for storage/ backup.
