Freeze with GTA 4 1.0.7

Hi

 

I recently got myself a new GPU (gtx 460) and i decided to start playing gta 4 again. I re installed and updated the game to the 1.0.7 version and downloaded and installed the lastest Nvidia drivers. Problem is that after 5 or so minutes the game freezes and i have to restart my computer. Those crashes are quite weird since the game's sound continues although the game freezes.

 

I look it up on various gta or nvidia related websites and found that many people had the same problem yet i have not been able to find the solution. I've tried to reinstall the game but it didn't work. Do you guys know what could be the problem(s) ?

My specs:

 

Intel E8400 (no OC)

Gainward GTX 460 GS

Corsair HX 620

3 gb of pc 8500 kingston ram

Asus P5q pro with realtek sound chipset

windows xp 32

 

NB: i Didn't have a single problem with this game (version 1.0.4) with my previous GPU (hd 4870)

Did you install a fresh OS once you changed the GPU?

 

This is probably an overheating issue, you should monitor your GPU temps.

No I didn't install a fresh Os after i changed the card, could this be the problem ?

Also the card runs just fine on COD MW 2, is it possible that the card overheats only in GTA 4 ?

Ok so I activated the V sync and was able to play for half an hour without any problem. My GPU temperature didn't exceed 64° C also.

Be sure to perform driver cleanup. GTAIV is *very* sensitive and any driver leftovers will not help you get better performance.

 

Note that most games will not strain your system as GTAIV will, hence more heat will be produced.

 

Generally the lockups are a sign that you should reinstall the OS. The fact you had to hard reset many times could have only damaged the OS even more. Usually, when the game freezes you should be able to minimize it with CTRL+ALT+DEL.
