luceberg
Well done! Your first steps to becoming a techie! Usually, if there are errors, they show up pretty soon, probably in the first pass.
cidamelo
Thank you I think the test is over, look what happened: *********Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit*********** I think maybe my HD is dying or my Windows is dying. If my windows is dying, Will I lose everything
luceberg
Well that is useful to know that your memory is ok. What happens when you start the pc. Does it start to boot into windows, but not to the desktop?
cidamelo
Well, I turn on the computer. Appears that screen, **Windows is loading**. It takes hours to load, and when it loads, a black screen appears and the computer restart It happens with all options, like security mode and last valid configuration. One time the pc ran Scan Disk, it fixed some errors but the problem persists. I don't wanna to lose all my archives
luceberg
Has anything been changed in the Bios? If so, go into the bios and load and save default settings. If the Bios is ok, the next thing to do is a repair install of windows. You have Windows 7 starter edition, right? Boot from the disk and when it has loaded, choose repair install. This will reinstall windows without losing your files. Edited July 31, 2010 by luceberg
cidamelo
luceberg is this safe? I don't know, I'm scared of these bios things because I don't know nothing about bios. I'm scared of the things get worst How do I know Bios is ok? And that's the problem. I only have the Windows XP and the Windows 7 Starter Edition, but my actual Windows Version is Windows XP Service Pack 3. And don't have the Windows XP Service Pack 3 cd. What can I do Edited July 31, 2010 by cidamelo
luceberg
Entering the bios and choosing to save default settings is safe. If you have not changed anything in there, then there is no need to do so. Windows XP is a bit more problematic, as it is vunerable to virus attack when installing. The way round it is to download SP3 from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en And repair install Windows XP with your internet disconnected, then apply the patch. cidamelo
I'll do it so. how do I save default settings? Is this option: LOAD FAIL SAFE DEFAULTS? about the windows, I didn't understand...... how will I put the Service Pack 3 in my Windows XP cd? And my Windows XP cd isn't original Edited July 31, 2010 by cidamelo
luceberg
Yes, load failsafe default settings is the one. You download SP3 and either put it on a usb stick or write it to a CD. When Windows is installed and you reach the desktop, you then install it from usb or cd. It is just like a big update. After that you can safely reconnect the to the internet. I am not sure about your XP cd not being original, but I think it will be ok for a repair.
cidamelo
luceberg I still didn't understand I want to make my Windows XP cd to be a Windows XP SP3 CD. But I don't know how to do it. Sorry if I being stupid, I'm not very good in these computers things. I'll try the bios thing!!! But I don't know why it would change, I don't touch in these bios things
luceberg
Ok, let's break it up. 1. Download SP3 from the link provided. 2. Transfer it to usb or cd. Don't worry about writing it on to your XP disk.
cidamelo
luceberg I defaulted bios and nothing happened But I have to record the SP3 in the Windows XP cd?
luceberg
Ok, nothing happened is fine. I am just instructing you to iron out possible faults in a logical way. No, you do not record SP3 onto the Windows XP cd. That is neither possible nor desirable. It is done in two stages: First do the repair install with the Windows XP cd as it is now. Do not worry about SP3 for the time being.
cidamelo
luceberg ok but how I do the repair? It only appears "installing windows" If I install it, I lose all my archives?? And I don't know how to properly install the windows
luceberg
You boot from the XP cd. When all the drivers etc. have installed, you reach a window which says, do you want to repair windows. Do not take this option, but instead select install windows. You will reach another window which gives you the option to do a Repair installation. You are instructed to press R on your keyboard to make this happen.
cidamelo
But these options don't appear to me! At least the last time I was using it...... now I'm not finding the damn cd Appears a screen saying "installing windows" and some archives names......strange

Ebernanut
Hi friends, technical assistance said Fraps ruined my computer, so I have to format it. I'm so sad, I've lost all my GTA IV saves FRAPS can't ruin a computer, it sounds like your tech support is worthless. Personally I would have trouble believing anything they said after making that statement.
cidamelo
Ebernanut but it's free my husband wouldn't pay a pc technical.
james227uk
If that guy thinks Fraps caused the problem, I wouldn't even let that guy even look at the computer. Edited August 4, 2010 by james227uk
cidamelo
james227uk yes this is very strange! I said to him Fraps is a famous program and it couldn't damage the computer, but he said he had to format anyway. I'm waiting for my computer to return. I'm very sad because I've lost some GTA IV saves (I backuped some saves, but they're old, I lost a lot of missions ). Thankfully I had already saved my photos I want to take a better technical assistance (my technical assistance is free because of the warranty), but my husband doesn't want to give me it!! He said I broke the computer, but I didn't!!!! Just because of Fraps. Very strange
cidamelo
I received my computer today, he's formated and I could backup some things, but my most recent GTA IV files I couldn't backup. But ok, no problem, I can play it again. But I'm afraid if my computer break again. If it break again, everyone will be pissed off with me
luceberg
We need to find out why your operating system keeps becoming corrupted. Do you have bad shutdowns or blue screens events? Does the computer shut down during gameplay? Since your husband and support will be annoyed at you if it goes wrong again, I suggest you have to learn to mend it yourself. The best way to back up your system is to a Disk Image, as you can format the drive and write it back exactly as it was. If you have Windows 7, there is a tool in windows to do this. Windows XP does not have this feature, so you will need the software to do this. Macrium Reflect is one such tool that is free, but the linux recovery disk does not work on every system. You need to test this and if it does not work, you have to buy the program. The retail version has a windows recovery disk which works on everything. Cost about £20 per pc, whatever that is in your country. You can back up to DVD, but it is much more convenient to use an external hard drive, so I would suggest you buy one of these too. Alternatively, sell your pc and buy an xbox instead. Edited August 6, 2010 by luceberg
