vans123
even its on the wrong section, ye is pretty reflexive most TC use the classic squarish blocks all over the city to start and all plain without curves OOPS, im talking like if never did it xD, yeh i did it too in my life and after the 4 blocks i realize that way is a total fail

GritEngine
lol, that's just odd. I wonder why they did that You know the ironic thing, is that GTA games start with the road, which are then given to lot artists... I see what you really mean by this though: Don't just grid out the roads like that. Do roads that make sense, and not just cloning little flat roads around lol. lpgunit
Wrong section, but still I lol'd. I do have a couple TC ideas that I wanted to do, but still I'm hesitant as it'll be likely that I'll never get to finish it.

leik oh em jeez!
It does somewhat work in real life. My Uncles own a development like the one in the picture, but it's A LOT less grid-like. There's only a few houses and a residents-only pool right now, but the plan is to sell all the lots, and let people build their homes how they like. But still, creating a huge grid is no way to start a TC. It's better to do something interesting. Get the creative juices flowing early on, and others might take interest and join in to help. GritEngine
Fun aside though, someone just made an excellent point to me when I showed them this thread: It seems like the topic starter is saying "You don't make roads first" and not "Don't do a grid" If you are saying "don't do a grid" - correct If you are saying "don't do the roads first" - you are wrong, and the roads come first in every GTA game before artists are even put to work, the roads are made. With that said: If you want to do a TC, you do Roads and Road LOD first. Before a single building is made. That is, if you want to do it the way Rockstar did and does it. JJ_Judge
Mods are non-commercial, and modders work on pure enthusiasm. So, I think the idea is not only in the roads. The point is you shouldn't plan on doing a "whole lot of map stuff in 50 square miles", because after doing about 10% (or whatever) of your work you will be bored and the mod dead. So maybe the roads are the way to do it for R* as gamedevs, but for modders, if they want to do it R* style, they shouldn't build roads for freakin' weeks and for a huge map, but scale plans smaller. IMO. Lot of mods died with Napoleon plans, btw (well, I may not post much, but I'm on this forum for more than 5 years, hehe).
