Matrix37
I know that after some certaain missions new weapons are avaibile to purchase from gun stories and from Jacob. My question is: after what missions new weapons are avaibile and what weapons become avaibile?

meson1
In the main GTA:IV, each successive weapon only becomes available to buy from the gun store as you progress through the storyline. I'm not sure which weapon becomes available when, but then I never buy my weapons. I only ever pick up the spawned weapons from around the map. They're totally free. They are all there from the start. For the Rocket Launchers and Sniper Rifles you have to go to Algonquin or Alderney (picking up a 6 star wanted level if the bridges are not open yet), but they're there to be had. Of course, an understanding of how the respawning mechanism works is needed if you want to collect an appreciable amount of ammo in a reasonable space of time. meson1
For your information. Here's how to collect free ammunition from spawning weapons. First a couple of basics (forgive me if you already know this, I know this stuff is mostly obvious): You have several different weapon slots. Each slot represents a weapon type. These include: a handgun slot; a submachine gun slot; an assault rifle slot and a sniper rifle slot. In GTA:IV there are two available weapons for each slot. Niko can only carry one weapon of any given type in each of the aforementioned slots. The same ammunition is used for both weapons of the same type. So, for instance, the 9mm Pistol uses the same ammo as the Combat pistol; and the Micro SMG uses the same ammunition as the SMG and so on. So this is all fairly simple so far. Now, this is how it works when you walk over a weapon on the ground. If Niko isn't carrying any weapon in that slot, the weapon will automatically disappear from the ground (obviously) and that weapon will be placed in the relevant weapon slot (thus he picks it up). If Niko is carrying that exact weapon in the relevant slot, the weapon will also disappear from the ground and the ammo from that weapon will be added to the weapon he already has in the slot. Now the significant bit: if Niko walks over a weapon, but is carrying the OTHER weapon of that type in the relevant slot, the weapon on the ground will remain, but the ammo from the weapon on the ground will be added to the weapon he already has in the slot and there is a sound that accompanies this event to let you know that this has happened. The game then provides you with a prompt to inform you that if you wish to pick up that weapon, that you should press the relevant control. If you were to press that control, he will pick up the weapon replacing the one in said slot, but no extra ammo will be added. Okay. So those are the basics. To take advantage of this mechanism to collect ammunition, here's what you should do. 1. Go find the weapon you want. e.g. go get the M4 combat rifle. 2. Then go find a spawn point for the other weapon of that type. e.g. climb onto the top of the Silverback building where you will find an AK-47 spawn point. 3. Walk over the other weapon allowing Niko to pick up the ammo, but DO NOT pick up the weapon when prompted.** 4. Walk a short distance away from the weapon (a few metres away). 5. Wait 35 seconds as that's how long it takes the ammo to respawn. 6. Walk over it again to pick up the next lot of ammo. 7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 as many times as desired. ** Note: If you were to pick up the weapon as prompted you would have to go a long way away and wait at least several minutes before the weapon would respawn, so this is best avoided. I collect all my ammo this way and it costs nothing. It can be a bit boring, so it's up to you if you have the patience. Enjoy. 4l3k54
You're right, that's boring Just kidding, but i'd rather pay for a clip and get on with my life (don't have a lot of time for playing). And you're right about the slots: Unarmed Melee - Knife/Bat Pistol - Glock/Desert Eagle Shotgun - Two kinds of shotgun Submachine - Uzi/SMG Assault Rifle - AK47/M4A1 Sniper Rifle - Bolt Action/Automatic Thrown - Grenade/Molotov And the infamous RPG-7. Barry Spock
I've just been replaying through the storyline and this time instead of using the weapons cheats I've been scouting around and picking up weapons. I found that when I pick up a weapon before it's available to be bought, it has no ammunition. I went and got that AK on the roof near the bridge, but it's useless until I get through a fire-fight where someone was using one, so I can pick up their ammo. meson1
Well that doesn't sound right. When I start a play through of GTA:IV, after the first save point and before doing any other mission, I go get all my preferred weapons (Desert Eagle combat pistol, combat shotgun, MP10 SMG and M4 Assault Rifle) and max out the ammo for those by collecting it from alternate weapon spawn points (9mm ammo from Karting track on Firefly island; pump action shotgun ammo from manager's office in Triangle Club; Uzi micro SMG from behind the Homebrew Cafe; and the AK-47 Rifle from the top of the Silverback building next to the East Borough Bridge). I have no problems collecting this ammo. I've even gone and got the sniper rifle from the top of the tower in Northwood in Algonquin. Very, very difficult with a six star wanted level, because you have to evade the police (and crucially the police helicopters) long enough to get up and back down that tower. But I have to collect one lot of ammo per visit to Algonquin and then escape back to the Broker safehouse to save. But I did it and maxed out my sniper ammo before continuing with the second mission. I play the PC version of GTA:IV.

I didn't include pistol because it's before weapon shops are unlocked, or the Uzi because it's in the mission that unlocks weapon stores, and Jamaican Heat also unlocks the stubby shotgun. But thanks for the sniper. Combat Sniper is also unlocked after "Pegorino's Pride" Edited July 27, 2010 by The Lolwut Pear
