TOMERAKA
Titles says all, start sharing your thoughts I do think it is. As R* did with previous games at the series, after launching one they were working on the developments of the other one, for an example, San Andreas came out in the end of 2004 (October) for the PS2, and in the middle of 2005 (June) for PC and Xbox. A short while after, they started to work on IV, and in order to calm their heavy fans down, they released GTA LCS and VCS, I think that this is the same case with Episodes from Liberty City, prehaps? Kwandilibro
Of course they're making it already. They're probably almost done with production and need to test for bugs and things.
vanishingpilot
They definitely are developing the next GTA. The question that remains, though, is what's the progress of the development. Edited July 5, 2010 by vanishingpilot

Yeah it would be a horrible move, since all the hype is really important. But maybe, they'll just drop little hints, and eventually drop a logo, a trailer, and some other things. I'm just hoping they don't take forever making it.
sminem
Of course they are I bet as soon as they were done with TLAD & TBoGT they started development on GTA V maybe even sooner then that. By now they are probably done with all the voice acting and are just working on bugs, glitches, and minor tweaks. Their main thing now is probably trying to work on a release date and of course those all important game trailers.
xNewtype Acex
I think they're working on it, yes, but that they're still in the first stages of development, choosing a city, creating characters, designing the city, writing the missions, etc. Remember R* North is working on Agent, so they'll probably finish that first untill the serious coding work begins. But that's because they weren't working on anything else at the time. It would be cool if GTA Next was nearly completed, but I have doubts. I personally think that GTA is at the Alpha stage. Not necessarily, as R* could choose to withhold all information about the game until close to when it's released(why, I don't know). That's what was thinking too. It would be more of a shock/surprise that way and it would probably create more hype. It depends on how close to release you mean. Obviously not like 1 month since that would create panic instead of hype. But i definately think GTA V is more than halfway through production. If it isn't finished then i don't think it's far off it! They have had a pretty long time to get it all together and make the game. R* North have been making GTA for years, so what? if they have Agent as well, i would imagine Agent will be the game that takes longer to make since it's new to them, but GTA is just the same old thing on a different engine to R* North! Obviously every game is unique and different, but the basic game, concept and programming etc. are just the same. They've had enough time to make the game i think. It's probably either close to finish, or it already is finished and is being tested and fixed etc. And they usually end up adding last minute features to the game. Shouldn't be long now untill an announcement, i'll even be happy with a teaser, at least then we'll know it's coming! The teasers are often released before the first trailer anyway, so when you see that then it normally means the game is done and R* are ready to start the hype. Either way, i think it's time we get SOMETHING! ... just anything involving GTA.

Mainland Marauder
I'd be willing to bet it's at least half done at this point. Not that I'm a game designer, but I'd think it would be easiest to create the game environment first and then build the story around it. Then, toward the end stages of development, record the voiceovers before bugfixing. And of course there's that time-honored Rockstar tradition - keeping fans guessing what's coming next. They aren't going to interrupt RDR's buzz with an announcement about GTA. We probably won't hear anything until next year. Rede
If you had a reliable source wouldn't you have a more definitive percentage? just curious. This isn't really in relation to GTA V, but it is very difficult to be precise about the completion status of a project with that kind of scope. Some of these video games are more involved than a Hollywood movie. There are a number of teams that work on different aspects of the project. Some of them only put in the bulk of their work towards the end of production as the script gets updated a lot with little changes. A rough estimate is about the best you can hope for even when things are going according to plan.

The R* North programmers have worked a lot on Euphoria (Rage aswell), and proved beyond any doubt that it's a super duper engine, otherwise, R* San Diego wouldn't use it with Red Dead. RedDragonsBOOM
LOL I don't think you understand how long it takes to create an engine from scratch, the engine used in GTA4 was what took the bulk of the time in the development process creating a new one at this point would be completely unnecessary. When Rockstar announces tha game , it will be about 50-60 % . I think that's pretty accurate indeed. No way is it finished, or anywhere near being finished. A quality game takes time. Gta IV took 4 years, Red dead redemption 5 years. In two years you think a brand new Grand theft auto would be complete? Not to mention the time they spent on the episodes two episodes. Yes, yes we know they now are comfortable with the engine, but it still takes time. Personally, i think spring 2011 at the earliest. But, my guess is the end of Summer 2011 Edited July 6, 2010 by Darrel
bobgtafan
I dobut the game will come out before 2012, it's in delevopment but with Agent, Bully, Max Panye, and LA Noire also coming up I doubt we'll see another dive into GTA land anytime soon. I didn't claim that I have a reliable source , but it's just a matter of estimation and prediction . Anyway , let me correct myself . I believe that when Rockstar releases the first official trailer of GTA Next , it will be about 50-60 % of completion . I can't predict if they are going to announce it , and after a short time , they will release the first trailer . In the time of GTA IV , I gave a solid estimation in a forum . It was a small challenge between me and an Internet friend of mine after the release of the first trailer in April 2007 . In someday of May 2007 , I estimated the completion of development process to be around 50 % , and my friend estimated it to be around 70-80 % . He was wrong and I was correct after one of the early previews of the game mentioned that the it has reached the stage of what I remember to be 55 % of completion . It's Rockstar's habit to release the first trailer of Grand Theft Auto games 7-9 months before the release of the them . They aren't going to interrupt RDR's buzz with an announcement about GTA. We probably won't hear anything until next year. These are the stages that past Grand Theft Auto games have been made in: 1. If the game uses a whole new engine, then create one and make sure it works well. 2. Find a good location. 3. Do all kinds of necessarily research. 4. Start designing the city and how it will work + writing the script so locations can be build in order to fit certain missions. 5. Continue designing the city + interiors. 6. Record motion capture/cutscenes. 7. Create vehicles, weapons and other things that's not part the city design. 8. Design missions. 9. Record voice-overs/in-game dialogue. 10. Testing + start marketing the game. 11. More testing. 12. Release the game. I would say that the new GTA is little more than halfway done, parhaps around 65-70%. If it were being devoloped then we should have got the message that states that R* is developing Grand Theft Auto V. Obviously we haven't heard that message so it isn't being developed nor do I think it is. All we have to do is wait for that special announcement. sminem
Something tells me that it takes a while to make a game as great as GTA especially if your using engines as sophisticated as the RAGE & Euphoria are. That being said I would still bet that GTA V is about halfway if not even more done at this point.
