[FAQ]How to use xliveless to load savegames

Recommended Posts

Since lately there have been too much tears and blood spilt over this, lets ultra oversimplify.

Applies to both GTAIV and EFLC with the exact folder paths valid for GTAIV

Q) I really don't appreciate the text arts, do you have a video for me?

A) Yes, Dr. John13 prescribes this for your condition.

Q) What is xliveless?

A) xliveless is a Games For Windows Live (GFWL) wrapper that

a) Removes the need for GFWL (good for people who don't play in MP, disables achievements, bypasses possible GFWL issues).

b) Moves the savegame folder to "My Documents" and allows loading of downloaded savegames.

c) Acts as a loader for various asi and dll plugins. Hence, if you already have some loader installed remove it before installing xliveless.

d) Up to and including patch 5 for GTAIV, it disabled RGSC as well so you didn't need that crap running in the background all the time, also presenting a possible cause for various issues.

e) Basically, xliveless can improve performance in some cases.

Q) Where can I get xliveless?

A) HERE. Note that the latest version supports all previous game versions and with each new update you will have to wait for listener (a big thanks and loads of cookies to him) to update the wrapper.

Q) How do I install xliveless?

A) Simple. Open the RAR archive you downloaded (if in doubt, for archiving purposes you can use 7-zip) and extract the xlive.dll file only into the game directory, that is the directory where the game and the launcher executables are located. For GTAIV that dir would look something like

for retailC:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\or for SteamC:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\

For EFLC it should be similar. these paths are valid for 32 bit OSes, for 64 it should be similar.

Q) Where can I get GTAIV savegames?

A) You can get them HERE. Big thanks and another pile of cookies for Fabio206 for creating these.

From recent development, it has come up that it may be very well possible these don't work on patch 7 and consequently patch 6. When I say "don't work" I mean "they fail loading from the savegame menu." xliveless will still work in junction with your own savegames on any patch version, but there seems to be a problem with patch 7 and these downloaded savegames. Thanks to miromiro for pointing this out, however there is probably more room for testing and determining what's going on in the background.

Q) Where do I get EFLC savegames?

A) There are some here, thanks to GTA 1911 for the link.

From my personal experience, I can confirm these do work on patch 1.1.2.0 (a patch 7 equivalent) as I have used them succesfully on my (Steam) version of TBOGT.

Q) How do I install the savegames?

A) If you need to get hold of your own savegames first, you will find them here

Windows XP SP3 - C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegamesWindows Vista - C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegamesWindows 7	- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames

Change the system driver letters accordingly. These paths are valid for both 32 and 64 bit OS versions. For EFLC the paths should be similar.

Now, to place the savegames in the proper directory, you can go by one of the following two procedures

a) Create the following folder structure in the "My Documents" folder manually

Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames

for both 32 and 64 bit OS versions. For EFLC it should be similar.

b) Simply start GTAIV, create a new game from the menu and save the game taking the first opportunity. Now you can look for the folder in "My Documents" and drop any savegames you have there.

You can go play now.

Notes:

a) if you used any other xlive wrappers (like rick's wrapper) remove all xlive.dll files you had installed to make sure thing go smoothly.

b) any savegames created with xliveless will not work without it anymore so you will not be able to import them back into GFWL. I'm not saying this is impossible (maybe there is a tool out there), but the solution is not self-evident.

c) sometimes the "My Documents" folder can be tough to find if you moved it or if you changed your username so be careful.

d) If anyone contributes EFLC specific paths, I'll add them no questions asked biggrin.gif

e) xliveless supports all versions up to 1.0.7.0 English and 1.0.6.1 Russian. Thanks to aligar for testing this.

Q) Where do I get EFLC savegames?

A) I don't know. If anyone knows of a list, do share with us.

Well, there's these. http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=11157

I've seen mixed reactions, some say they work some say they don't. (Although I'm pretty sure the people who say they don't work just didn't install xliveless properly)

More exact then this? That's impossible.

Hello.

I have Windows 7 x32, original GTA IV (license), last patches and updates, XLiveLess and created folder "savegames" in My Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA IV.

After installing XLiveLess game again creating saves in .../appdata/local/ folders. Of course i cant use my old saves, because game says that they are corrupted (again - Xliveless installed!).

I tried to run GTA as administrator (options has been checked at "LaunchGTAIV.exe" and "GTAIV.exe"), i running game from LaunchGTAIV.exe, as told in FAQ.

What i did wrong? There are all conditions for normal work of xliveless.

I'm using latest version from first post of this topic http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=388658&st=0

ps. I tried to use old versions of xliveless but it didnt' help

Can be main problem is there? - 27/08/2010 07:19:47.167 Unknown game version, skipping patches (signature = 0x00000094)

How to repair it? Game version is 1.0.7.0, russian.

Edited by aligar

But the patch version 1.0.7.0 is only at russian version of GTA, as far as i know. Other languages have different digits of latest version.

There is text in readme file of xliveless: supports 1.0.7.0 patch.

Sorry for my bad english, hope you understood me.

which patch is best and which version of xliveless is best to stop drunk cam??????

thanx in advance smile.gif

i've applied patch 1.0.3.0 and xliveless ver.095... it disables RGSC bt when i click on LaunchGTAIV.exe...it opens with GTA IV.EXE...help me out of this problem..

You need to change this

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames

to something like

E:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames

if your OS is not installed on the C partition but on E (in this example). Basically it's just the folder in which you are looking for the files, the folder Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames must be on the system partition.

Hi mkey82, thanks for feedbacks smile.gif

Those archives are old, If I'm not wrong, xliveless was not so used at that time, so I didn't put it in the readme.

As soon as possible I'll modify archives with new instructions (I've already done it in italian in our site months ago) or maybe I'll link this topic wink.gif

Anyway we'll upload also tlad and tbogt saves soon, I'll let you know when I'll update my topic wink.gif

I tried all the steps mentioned here and its still not working

After installing the game i have installed razor 1911 crack. I have not installed any patches. I downloaded the latest xlive and ran the game once.I followed all the instructions mentioned here.

I copied the game files to "savegames" directory( there was user music folder also in this location).

C:\Users\shsreeni\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames (this is the location where I have copied the game files)

C:\Users\shsreeni\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames (this the location where the game files is stored by default)

When i started the game after installing xlive.dll i saw the game files are still saved to the default location and i verfied it with the modification time.

Please need help. This is the second time I have lost my saved game files.

So you only have to install that one file? Everything else stays where it is, in the xliveless folder? And also, what do you do after installing? How do you launch it? I think its Launch GTAIV.exe but that doesn't work for me for some reason... I've been trying to get this working for awhile now, and I cant seem to get it right. What I did was extract the xliveless extension but whenever I launch either GTAIV.exe or LaunchGTAIV.exe, I still get

"

GTAIV.exe - Application Error

The application was unable to stat correctly (0xc0150004). Click OK to

close the application.

OK

"

just like I was getting after GTA stopped working the first time, right after a reinstall of Windows 7 64 bit... what am I doing wrong?

Also, sorry for posting on a dead thread but I didn't know where else too

You should reread the opening post.

Savegames go into the newly created folder in My Documents.

xliveless.dll goes into the game directory.

There is no "xliveless" folder.

The game is ALWAYS and I do mean always started with the launcher.
