General overclocking for GTAIV

It's not uneven at all. What are you talking about? I can pour 10 drops of Arctic Cleaning #1 on and it stays in one place...

Several customers that had bought it said they got temps between 30 and 40c load.

Ok, ignore it if you like. It's another step in the overclocking game.

How do you know it is flat? You need a known very straight edge to guage it, ie a stanley knife blade or similar and look at the gap against a light source.

My experience of two intel quad cores I have lapped is that the surface is very uneven. It may be that intel makes them so deliberately, so that the area in the sink closest to the cores is more prominent and hence gets the best surface contact, the thermal paste oozing into the troughs. This works reasonably well, but it is not the best it can be, not as good as two very flat surfaces with a very thin thermal interface.

There are cons though, not least that you blow the guarantee and the cpu may have less resale value.

Anyway, my cooler is a prolimatech megahalems with push pull 120mm fans and the temps rarely go much over 50C playing gta. I didn't lap the cooler cause it was pretty flat already.

Hope that helps.

Did you bother to read my post before you wrote that essay? No offense, but I already stated that it's __flat__.

As said, I poured liquids on it, and it stayed there. Didn't leak all over. No movement at all. Flat. Get it? biggrin.gif

Cornflakes4u - Really sorry to hear about your experiences with northQ. As with everything in life - nothing is finite. The process you are referring to is lapping. Just get some fine grade glass paper, place it on a mirror, which is firmly positioned on the floor, and in small circular patterns rub the heatsink/cpu around. Make sure that the heatsink/cpu is exactly perpendicular to the mirror's surface at all times. It will scratch it, and excess material will build up. After lapping you should clean of any loose materials. These will fry your PC if they have the chance.

If you are recieving the exact same temps from a totally different product I would be happy. Generally you should expect worse environments from different hardware. Unless, it's like 7800GTX to 280 GTX - where you would expect a dramatic increase in performance.

What are your ambients? Return the product if needs be, but without further information regarding your system I cannot comment further.

Here in the UK, the weather has started to turn mild again. It's 14*C outside now, and inside my extension it's around 18*C. These temps are extremely important. My load is 53*C max, on air.

What is your outside temperature, your indoor temperature and your CPU temperature using CoreTemp x64?

I think that you should just f**k all this fake water cooling off, and get some real water tech. Seriously.

Plus+ :Cornflakes4u - You seem pretty pissed off. I would have trusted Corsair over brandxxxx anyday. I'm gonna stick with air for now, but I think you should go underwater and I think you'll be more than happy with the results... smile.gif

Hi friends! I have a INTEL CORE2QUAD Q8200 2.33 GHz, and I want to overclock it to 3.00 GHz! My motherboard is a Gigabyte EP31-DS3L. I heard that overclock is very dangerous because it could overheat the computer, but my computer temperatures are low (30° normal, 35° playing GTA), so I think I can overclock! And if my pc temperature gets high, it turns off by itself colgate.gif So I guess there's no problem in overclocking.... what do you think?

Hey there, sorry for the very late reply. I kinda gave up on overclocking. I don't achieve any better performance in GTA IV (which is why I initially wanted to OC), so there is no point in doing so.

Thanks for that tip! I will definitely try it the next time I get on the wagon.

I can't say I'm unhappy with the NorthQ watercooler. The room temperature was 29c and I was getting 59c load @ 3.5GHz, and that's 10c cooler than with the CoolerMaster V8. But I shoulda gone for the Corsair one. biggrin.gif

Again, thanks for all you taught me. I have even helped several friends overclock their systems. With great success!

CoreTemp x64 won't show the indoor/outdoor temps. Jk... biggrin.gif Outdoor was in the early 20's at that time and indoors 29c. Load when @ 3.5GHz was 59c. So not too bad. Gonna be a lot better temps when the winter comes. Then the temps will be below 0c outside.

PS! I've come to the conclusion that every single crash I got when I was overclocking was caused by my RAM. It is really hard to find the correct timings apparently. So I switched back to the old RAM (love my Crucial 667MHz!), and am selling this piece of shhhhh Kingston bs.

Go for it!!! You are getting great temps and should be able to push it to 3GHz. What software are you using to check temps?

It's correct that your system will shutdown if it gets too warm but you can still damage it. So don't rely on the "smoke-alarm". Monitor your temps and make sure they are all fine, and your system should do fine too. smile.gif

Good luck!
