Best Rappers and Worst Rappers

Recommended Posts

Wordsworth

I can't say who I think are the greatest of alltime, and I'm not going to list them. There are definitely plenty that I think are the sh*t, and are some of the best at what they do. Some rappers that I think are great lyricists both in their words and their delivery (despite whether or not I like all of their music) are Pete Rock, Eazy E, Tech N9ne, Eminem, Nas, UGK, Tupac, B.I.G., Cunninlynguists, Grandmaster Flash, KRS-One, Large Professor, P.U.T.S., Organized Konfusion, and some others.

There are a few others I would say are great but I can't think of them all. tbh I'm pretty blazed and I was lucky to remember what I did.

I think most of the "greatest rapper ever"s are overrated. BIG has a cool voice and does say some funny sh*t but I think most of the time he's boring man. Nas is freakin boring. He has the whole smart guy thing, Nas. I think Redman was the best ever cause he's just the most fun. And he's funny as hell.

Wu-Tang is another one I like. They have the martial arts movie thing and that's just an awesome gimmick.

I still can't get over your name being pepsi upside-down.

Anyway, I think Above the Law are terribly underrated.

and I also adore redman for making this

Odd Future Wolf Gang.

Just a couple of teenage punks rapping for fun, not for profit or anything. They rap about rape and murdering and sh*t, so the punchlines are pretty funny.

Earl (kid that sounds younger in the song) is very talented and he's only about 17 years old. In a couple of years, when he grows up, I think he will be one of the best rappers in the game. icon14.gif

I look at hip hop artists in four catergories, Lyricists, Emcees, Rappers, and Crunks.

LYRICISTS- These are the best hip hop artists and the most talented. When making songs, they focus on lyrical substance, flow, and intelligent thinking. Many lyricists are smart individuals and they truly represent hip hop in an intellectual way. Unfortunately, they'll never get a lot of mainstream recognition.

ex; Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kweili, Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, etc.

EMCEES- Kinda the same as a lyricist, only they're more mainstream and they also focus on punch lines, too.

ex; Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., etc.

RAPPERS- The rapper is the most mainstream hip hop artist out of the four. Most rappers are less talented than emcees and lyricists and most of them focus on style. But there are good rappers and bad rappers.

ex; Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Drake, Game, Rick Ross, etc.

CRUNKS- Crunks are the worst hip hop artists ever. These guys only make club songs that are crunk, snap, or anything similar to those sub-genres. Crunks choose style and rowdiness over anything lyrical, meaning that they suck at rapping, prefering to yell nonsense or say the same thing over and over again. For some reason, people think that the sh*t crunks put out is better than any emcee or lyricist (simple; motherf*ckers are stupid.)

ex; Lil Jon, Ying Yang Twins, Soulja Boy, Waka Flocka Flame, etc.

Best rappers: Nas, 2pac, Biggie, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Game, Drake& Kanye West

Worst rappers: Rick Ross, Birdman, Waka Flocka Flame, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Jon, etc

P.S: My choice is somewhat 'mainstream' [Depends on your perception]

Anyone's list of best/worst rappers will be broken. There's so much hip hop created every day that what you know barely scratches the surface. There's a whole underground culture that's been thriving for the past 20 years, with thousands of talented rappers that don't get any publicity but are more talented than most famous rappers. If you say 2pac, Lil Wayne, Biggie, Jay Z and Eminem are the best rappers then I think you're a sucker...

(this wasn't aimed at anyone particular, just everyone in general)

Actually, the main thing is that everyone's opinions differ...to me, rappers like 2pac, biggie, nas etc. may be one of the 'greatest', but to th other person, they may even be termed as 'sellouts'...you never know..

dude i'm sorry but Wayne, Drake and Kanye haven't even been around long enough to even deserve that title. Bottom line theres like 50 rappers that would get on the list before their names got thought about.

Tyler, Em and IT make it into my top 10, never really been a fan of Snoop, and haven't paid Lupe enough attention to judge.

anyways, top 5;

1) OFWGKTA (would say Tyler and then Earl, but just kept it as Odd Future for simplicities sake.)

2) older Dr Dre, I Need A Doctor pisses me off to no extent.

3) Ice Cube

4) Mikill Pane

5) Proof

bottom 5:

5) Cam'ron

4) Lil Wayne

3) BoB

2) Drake

1) Nicki Minaj

I should have just said most of Young Money for my bottom 5, with the exception of Cam and Bobby Ray.

I've been on a bit of a hip-hop kick as of late. No idea where that's come from. I've always dug DOOM but lately he just captivates me. I think it's the voice as well as the lyrics. It has to be.

MF DOOM is a genius, it's a shame some people hate him. I think his style/lyrics just fly over most peoples' heads so they bash him. He's like on a higher plane in terms of hip hop but people don't recognize it. icon14.gif

Best (in no particular order)

1. Nas

2. Earl Sweatshirt

3. Mos Def

4. GZA

5. Notorious B.I.G.

There are obviously others who should be in this list, but this is my personal opinion/favorites. These 5 guys have the most consistent and potent doses of lyrics and flow I've ever heard, I got mad respect for them. RIP BIG! FREE EARL! SWAG!

I think it's his stage show thing where he sends (or used to send, I don't know if he does it anymore) fake DOOMs out. It is a bit of a dick move especially when you have fans that pay time and time again for what essentially is a gamble. His studio work is amazing but I don't rate him live from what I've seen on YouTube. I know it isn't the same, but they won't really let him on the plane wearing a bastardised Gladiator mask.

He's old and out of shape, I can understand why he might have sent a fake on stage if he can't handle performing all his songs, but I agree that it is a dick move. I don't really dig live hip hop shows anyway, unless it's a quality venue or a real show like the Roots Picnic. Speaking of which I decided I'm not going to it this year, even though Escobar will be headlining it. confused.gif

I'm not the type of a guy to do lists, so I'll write a massive essay instead.

I like emcees from older and newer generations, age doesn't really mean sh*t to me - when you're real, you're real.

I've got to admit, I like some mainstream artists as well - Wiz Khalifa, Kanye, even Cudi and B.o.B, et cetera, but no, that doesn't make me a brainless moron with no respect to the way older music treasures the true elements of music. Don't get me wrong the other way neither, a lot of my favorite artists are from the "good old days", but I stand up for my generation too.

When it comes to the artists I listen to the most, names like Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller,, Nas, Jay-Z and Kanye West pop up, but it's not a fact to base my favorite artists on, nah, I'd also like to mention names like Odd Future, Foreign Exhange, Gang Starr (of course! damn!), Styles of Beyond, and so on, the list goes on for ages, from Lupe to N.W.A, there are simply too many artists to list.

I don't really hate artists, of course I dislike many, but it's hard for me to truly detest an artist - no matter how bad, fake or commercial their music were, I can always respect a person who grabs the mic, the guitar or whatever it were to express themselves or at least do what they want to. Of course, it's a shame if that means forgetting to show love to their roots, the culture, or in general to produce low-quality music only to make money, it's still making music and doing what you want to in the end.

For example, I can't even hate Weezy - I know it's hard to admit for many, but before the days of Tha Carter III the dude actually made music that came from his mind into the paper as rhymes, and from time to time, he has still managed to upgrade the level of his lyrics, still not high enough to compete with the finest but still putting in the effort.

This said, a lot of artists like Drake and Wayne definetly won't make it into my favorite artists but I still do not have enough disrespect towards them to put them into the bottom list. Hate it or love it.

I remember listening to my iPod at work on my break and A Tribe Called Quest came on thanks to shuffling. I'd got hold of their album Midnight Marauders a couple of months before and forgotten about it - usually I make a playlist of new albums I add so I can give them all a fair listen before they get lost in my library but for some reason I must have missed it off. So the robot woman narration thing got on my nerves after a while but Midnight Marauders is definitely a solid album.

MF GRIMM is a decent artist, but I don't think he is as strong as a solo artist as compared to when he is paired up with DOOM.

ATCQ is one of my favorite groups, they definitely keep it real. Electric Relaxation is one of my favorites by them.
