....

Aye man, this is going to come down to personal preference. Couple of things though.

The nas tracks I posted werent examples of incredible flow, they were just conceptual tracks where he speaks from the perspective of being a gun, the other was a story told backwards. Im not sure how you can refer to this as boring as they are pretty groundbreaking as far as hip hop goes..again though, we go back to the issue of subjectivity and taste.

as for rhyming one syllable per bar etc, your boy tech 9 does actually use these schemes amidst a lot of the more rapid fire lines

I mean, sorry, but a beat with two kicks a snare with one syllable rhymed per bar just sounds lame to me.

that is the essence of hip hop though, and it is actually people like nas, g rap, percee p, and whos that guy..big Ls mentor, i forget his name..they gave birth to a lot of the more complex schemes (such as the eminem track you posted earlier), you have to remember that illmatic came a good 6-7 year before tech 9 even brought out any material. And yeah nas was speaking from a"gangsta" perspective, he was documenting his life in illmatic..then moved onto the whole mafioso thing which was prevalent in hip hop back then. When he grew up he became one of the more socially concious rappers out. Hes also one of the most versatile artists in hip hop, flow wise. Like him or not, even the staunchest Jigga Warrior recognises nas' talent and influence on hip hop.

On the other hand you already said you like it when it comes out making sense, so I doubt you mind the forced rhymes and the off-times as much.

I consider tech 9 to be a lot more forced, like hes sometimes trying to fit as many words per bar as he can. Like I say, there are times where you cant understand what hes even saying.

admittedly, Im not big fan of hyphy or whatever techs style is. Coming from the UK If I want to hear hype sh*t like that ill listen to a drum and bass emcee or some grime. I also think the guy actually has some lyrics but they get lost amidst the style. Its hard to come across as very deep and meaningful when it flows like

That your daddy's crazy DonnyI miss your drumming like me

One day you'll be rulingLeeleeI miss you in my face

Yellin'Daddy, what you doin'You two are the reason

Why I'm still standing todayBut I'm 1600 miles away

And you get my heart sinkin'When I start thinkin' about you babies

I heavily start drinkin'

suicide letters though, good track.

I laugh when all of you guys put Lil Wayne on your worst list. Yes he is annoying, yes he is a sell-out of the sort, but the man is talented. May be f*cked in the head, but talented. May put out many mixtapes to make the fans happy and most sound like sh*t, but yes, talented. He experiments alot, and that is what is going to expand the rap/hip hop game. Look at Kanye with a whole Autotune album, certainly not his best, but its something fresh, something new. Wayne is not the best by a long shot, but doesn't deserve to be on the worst list. Anywho, we might as well make it "Who I like" and "Who I dislike" lists, cause that's all it is.

Who I Like "Best"

Lupe Fiasco- No one is in the kid's league currently

Kanye West- Respect him for putting his career on the line with 808 album, came through unharmed too

Wiz Khalifa- Lyrical mastermind, fantastic beats, just flows

Kid Cudi- All of his songs continue to amaze me with his mind-bending beats as well as his lyrics

Nas- Considered one of the best, and is probably my most listened to rapper

Lil Wayne- Yes, has alot of commercial sucess, sell out to some, some sh*t songs etc... Some of his lyrics are nuts, thing's I never thought I would hear and after I hear it I ask myself "Did he really just do that?" in amazement

Snoop Dogg- Doggystyle was a classic the day it came out

T.I.- Guy has had his problems, also considered a sort of "sell-out", but stays true to his lyrics, has that meaningful sh*t, especially with Paper Trail.

Wale- Guy will be invading homes soon if he hasn't already. Watch out

Drake- Definition of a game changer. "So Far Gone" could of been a platnium album itself, and Thank Me Later is undeniably good.

Eminem- Can't go wrong with Em, Dr. Dre knew what he was doing when he first signed him.. Besides Relapse, all of his albums have been great to fantastic.

Common- No one has him on their lists, and I don't understand why. His "Finding Forever" is probably one of my Top 10 rap albums

Tupac and Biggy- Nuff' said

"My Up and Coming" List

B.o.B.- His finally released first album is very good. Yes, he has been around for at least 5 years, but with this being his first album, I expect nothing but good things for him to come.

Big Sean- Kanye found a lyrical guy when he signed him to his G.O.O.D. music label, they just need to find the right beats for him.

J.Cole- "Light's Please" and "Dreams" is a pleasure to my ears

Diggy Simmons- Rev Run's middle son, signed with Capital Records after music executives heard his "Made You Look" freestyle.. Give it a listen

I'm not going to put a "Worst" list because with me, it could go on for days. But this is my opinion, I'm no pro, so I understand if one or all disagree. But give the Up and Comers a listen, you might you like one or two.

orly.gif I love rap music! My favorite rappers are Eazy-E, Grandmaster Flash, Ghostface Killah, Common, Sugarhill Gang, Slick Rick, Nas, Afrika Bambaataa, Cypress Hill, Dizzee Rascal, Lady Sovereign, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, Kid Cudi, Jay-Z and others............ I also found some Soulja Boy songs interesting, even though they're a little weird and repetitive.

I liked 50 Cent's old songs, but the newer songs are bad. cry.gif

8. Easy-E

WTF?!?!? What you got against Eazy-E? He's a f*cking West Coast legend.

Yeah, but his rhymes are as bout as complex as Soulja Boy's. He has a nursery rhyme style of flowing, and he doesn't have much to say. Sorry, I just always felt like west coast people held on to him because of his status as a pioneer. One of today's worst rappers could go toe to toe with him lyrically. The only way you could change my mind is to post one thing he's said that's ever made you think more than a 1 sec about it. Sorry, he's too simple. IMO

Its also widely stated that he never actually wrote any of his rhymes anyway, same for Dre. Most of their material was allegedly written by cube and Ren. You cant really call him a great rapper due to this (could flow though). E was all about image really, and personality. The guy was something of an Icon and theres a case for calling him a legend just based on that.

Hobbes...good list, appreciate the explanations, was good to read. Youd be surprised at how many lists I see common on though, im not a huge fan of Finding Forever but Like Water for Chocolate and Resurrection are both classic albums in my eyes. Wiz Khalifa..keep hearing the name, havent heard a thing. Could you post some favourite tracks?

and I take umbrage at you having neither Blu or any Wu on your list viddy_pirate.gif

Well thanks for the compliments OH. I do love Wu Tang, but it seems I just don't listen to them as much anymore as I did a year or two ago. But on the subject of Wiz Khalifa, he's hit or miss for alot of people. I personally love all his mixtapes and his album, Deal or No Deal. Here's some of my favorite songs and some youtube links.

This Plane

Say Yeah

The Thrill

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWVXKf8U2lA

B.A.R. (Burn After Rolling)

Were Done

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o82VVwznHs8

Still Blazin'

Those are just some of his many songs, check out his latest mixtape, Kush and OJ, its pretty sick. What impresses me the most is he can flow with with fast beats, slow beats, reggae to techno. He's not a one trick pony, as my grandfather would say ha.

BTW, whats the code for embed videos in your post?

Slug, simply because he managed to make that successful transition from a battle rap-oriented kid, to pumping out some great deep, introspective songs and drastic change in style. Not to mention he co-founded one of the most successful independent hip hop labels.

Tonedeff, who's a triple threat who can rap, sing and produce. Probably the most-talented MC around with an absolutely CRAZY flow.

Hopsin, since nobody I've seen here has even mentioned the dude. Produced his own album as well, and even at a young age you can tell he's pretty talented (nice story rap, but usually he flows a lot faster):

Dude its quite clear the topic starter has only been listening to rap music for a year or two at best. He's still looking into artists within the genre that he could like for now he'll listen to mainstream stuff and claim there the best until he starts looking to the roots of the genre to acts like the Geto Boys and many of the other artists on your list. But you forgot to give props to UGK and 8Ball & MJG they were representing the South if not before but around the same time.

Sorry my bad and there worth a listen check there earlier stuff because they signed with Bad Boy during the later years of the group. Bottom line we all know puffy has the ability to ruin good albums or material look at the posthumous releases by Biggie for example.
