The Walking Dead

I've only just begun reading the comic and it's f*cking great. I've never been a big comic guy but the story truly is engrossing. I'm not really sure whether I am spoiling the rest of the series for myself, but reading the comic should tide me over during the break between the next season. I'm hoping they go back to focusing on the material that is available to them because from what I've read it would make for great television.

I knew you'd dig it. Isn't the original story great? I have no idea why they've strayed so far from it.

Maybe a bit OT but one violent, gritty comic book series in the vein of The Walking Dead that is well overdue for a film adaption is DC/Vertigo's Preacher and it looks like it's finally getting a shot.

Columbia Pictures announces today that Sam Mendes, of Road to Perdition, Jarhead, and the upcoming Revolutionary Road, will direct an adaptation of Vertigo's Preacher comic series. No writer has been hired yet, but Mendes himself will search for one over the next few months. Neal Moritz (who has been in the news a lot recently) will be producing. The comic tells the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, he teames up with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire to set out on a journey across America to find God - who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven.

Merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Preacher Jesse Custer becomes completely disillusioned with the beliefs that he had dedicated his entire life to. Now possessing the power of the word, an ability to make people do whatever he utters, Custer begins a violent and riotous journey across the country. Joined by his girlfriend Tulip and the hard drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, the Preacher loses faith in both man and God as he witnesses dark atrocities and improbable calamities during his exploration of America.

If it sounds badass, that's because it is. Preacher was one of the most popular comics in the late 1990s that has been a candidate for adaptation for years, taking the form an HBO series and feature produced by Kevin Smith, but neither of which ever came to fruition. This latest iteration has nothing to do with the past projects and will be adapted from the ground up again. It sounds like it could be a very badass story, especially in the hands of Sam "Kate & Leo Reunited" Mendes. Let's just hope that this isn't as doomed as the the other versions of the projects, because I'd actually like to see it come together. Though I do think the success of The Dark Knight has made this a much bigger priority for Columbia. Anyone excited?

Brilliant read. Anyone here familiar with it?

Amazing, absolutely amazing comic book. Not sure that a film will do it justice. Maybe a televised series, like the original idea?

There were something like 9 graphic novels so I can see it being more suited to a series adaption for sure.

Enjoyed episode 6. Thought it was a good way to end the series. Very impressive first series. Shame about the wait for the second.

Having just read the first issue, I feel the pilot episodeof the series was a lot better executed. It's going to be interesting to read a few more issues and see what I think compared to the rest of you, considering I saw the series first.

Have you taken that personality test yet? I'm dying to see it.

Haha, sorry if that sounded selfish. blush.gif It's going to be interesting for me.

PS: I scored "low" on the narcissism bit.

Hah! Well, I only started reading the book after the first two episodes. So I'm kind of in the same boat as you.

To be honest, yeah, I felt the same at first. Not only does the comic suffer from your standard comic book issues like clunky dialog and odd pacing (although you could argue that failing usually falls on the shoulders of the reader) but the first episode of this series was just so well done.

However, I'm sure you'll quickly realize why there's been a bit of a backlash. The world in the books seems far better planned out and characters are far more frank and realistic with their opinions and motivations. Plus, you don't have ridiculous sh*t like 10 people driving around in 5 vehicles when gas is at a premium. (Or a severe risk) tounge.gif

Also, no latin-american gangs guarding f*cking nursing homes.

That just made me thing... when they run out of gas... I wonder if the guys would just do desert-caravan style travels accross the highways...

hm by the way, all the Walkers on the ground outside that facility... They were dead, right?

Last episode was actually so-so for me. Some of the dialouge were goofy and the scenes where hte survivors were drunk seems a bit silly to me.

This season felt like a rush because of the 6 episodes. Glad to hear that second season has more episodes.

Whoever said "f*ck Shane" a few pages back; f*ck Shane indeed.

I see this thing boiling up until one day Rick is just going to beat the living crap outa his mate. Like Avon/Stringer part 2 (for all you Wire fans).

Interesting end to the series. Can't believe Jacqui decided to stick around to be vapourised but I'm glad Dale got Andrea out. Interesting characters, didn't want them gone this early. Dale is probably my favourite, the sly old dog.

I think this show could use a better group of writers all thinking alike. It really suffers witht he dialogue; like it said in one review I read, the episodes and scenes all feel like they've been written by different people.

A lot of questions left unanswered (for those like myself who haven't read the comic anyway):

  • What happend to Merl? And can he like stay away because Daryl's actually kinda cool at the moment?
  • Who's in the choppa?
  • Morgan and son, where are you gone?

Also, loved the flashback scene in the hospital with all the soldiers executing the patients. They bloody would wouldnt they? More flashback scenes please. I want to know more about Dale, Andrea and the rest of the survivors.

Would have actually liked the whole season to be Rick traveling with father and son, and meeting his wife and kid, and the camp of survivors, at the end of the season.

Yeah. They strayed from the comics anyway.

More flashback scenes please.

Honestly, I want them to go light on that.

I don't want this to start feeling like Lost with zombies anymore than it does with it's obvious and unlikely multiculti casting and forced love triangle etc etc.

Was this the last episode until next season?

Have to say, as most people have mentioned I felt the series really rushed after the 3rd or 4th episode. Also felt the total difference in episodes with the different writers, they seemed to have just pushed every incident into as little screen time as possible which didn't really work out for the best.

As for the last episode, I thought it was okay..It felt rushed and even though the ending was great I guess I just expected more. Also really cant believe that the black woman wanted to give up and die, I really wanted her to live. Glad the old guy got the blond chick out from the place before it blew though really like both of those characters

This I don't mind too much. If stuff like WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD gets omitted, I won't be crying a river. And I can do without Michonne too. Slicing zombie heads off with a katana sure is swell, but some stuff should just stay in the comic books.

I'll second going light on flashbacks. Here and there, fine. The one in the last episode was alright, but I don't want them to become a regular feature. It's a pretty cheap way of revealing something about a particular character in my opinion, and it completely takes you out of what's happening in the present.

Got to agree that the rushed, forced-together nature of this season has really hindered it. It's been good so far, and very enjoyable, but I don't think it's really lived up to what the first episode promised. Some more cohesiveness next season is needed, as well as a lot, lot more character work. There hasn't been a death so far that I've remotely cared about because I don't care about the characters they kill off. In turn, this damages the effect of deaths in the first place... they're kinda being wasted on characters that don't matter.

so... the added scenes were pretty pointless parts in the middle, like, that black kid whose name I don't remember praying before dinner or when he helped his father setup the house's boards on windows, etc.

What?

Reruns have some extra scenes. You know, like deleted scenes, director's cut bullsh*t. Something like that.

I absolutely flew through what has been released of the comic series and I hope to god they start to follow the subject content more closely. I realise that they can't follow the content to a T as some things wouldn't transfer effectively to television, but the comic literally made me go holy sh*t on several occasions.

Looking forward to the next season regardless.

Yeah, saw that preview during Breaking Bad last night. Look, Rick, I know you don't want to smash the camera, but at least try to make it look good! tounge.gif

I'm pretty stoked to see where they take the show from here. It's already pretty divergent from the comics, so things are a little unpredictable to those in the know.

I hope they don't let Kirkman write any more episodes. The show never really hit the same high it did during the first episode, and the granny gangsters were just... So Kirkman. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't like how comicy it was at times. I hope they really play Michonne down a bit and, if it happens in this season, The Governor. He's such a typical comic book villain, and I don't think he'd make the transition to TV all that well.

Huh. I'm not on the ball when it comes to what elements were written by whom, but I think they could lift elements directly from the comic and put them on the show, no problem. Then the only thing holding them back would be Laurie Holden's ridiculous overacting. tounge.gif

But seriously, The Governor would be awesome. Yeah, I found him a bit much even in the comics, but with a little subtlety, he could be fantastic. Another thing that'd make an awesome plotline for the show is the whole misadventure with the cannibals - it happens much farther down the road in the comic, but I found it rather interesting.

I thought the nursing home banditos sh*t was probably the worst thing I've ever seen on an AMC show, so that's surprising if it was Kirkman's idea. I wouldn't put up with that garbage in the comic book, although if that were the case I'd have been spared the ridiculous acting.
