South Africa is fairly dysfunctional by developed world standards but it's got to look like paradise compared to where they came from.

 

Some of their players look like little kids. They're not, they're just small. Midfielder Pak Sung-Hyok is listed as their youngest player at 20. Their whole midfield looks like a U-18 side playing against grown men.

Thing is, 17 minutes in and they are not looking bad at all. Or is it the Brazilians just playing too defensively?

NK are playing a 5-3-2 formation and the backline has been rock solid so far. I'm pretty impressed tbh. They are restricting Brazil to long shots and Luis Fabiano- Brazil's main target man- hasn't had a notable touch inside the area.

 

Wtf is up with Kaka. Real Madrid have ruined that lad.

The sight of the firing squad must be a huge motivation for the Koreans, not playing to badly but you can see they lack that little bit of quality to make something happen.

Same here. I am somehow in sympathy with the NK-Squad.

 

EDIT: Haha, Oliver Kahn is ranting on the Brazilian team on German television. He seems to be really disappointed...

That's Communism.

 

On the issue of North Korean citizens being unable to 'leave' their country. This is entirely true. Many describe the country as a 'huge concentration camp'. Hell, to even go from one town to another in North Korea, requires their citizens to apply for 'internal passports' which are generally only granted for an important work-issue or family issue (i.e. funeral) is taking place in another town/city.

 

The divide between North and South is protected by the good ol' 38th, a 'neutral' area which is heavily policed by both countries troops, and if they try and sneak over the border to either Russia or China, these countries simply ship the North Koreans back and then they are thrown into the countries terrible penal system. If you ever commit a crime, make sure it isn't in North Korea as they reportedly have the worst penal system in the world. Expect to die in your prison cell rather than be released back into society.

 

Oh, and I imagine the players families have probably been threatened hence the heavy commitment (as well as the indoctrination of lifelong Communist teachings) of the players in this match, and I also imagine that this is a reason why many North Korean players won't also take this opportunity to seek asylum in another country.

 

Basically it's as close to Hell on Earth as you will get, but give them there dues, they're playing like Champions right now!

Wouldve been great to see NK hold out for a draw. Sadly, don't think that'll happen now, having a good back line won't score NK any goals. I did catch a glimpse of that guy in the crowd though, the one with the banner/placard saying "Forget politics for 90 mins". That's pretty much spot on, for these guys it's nothing to do with their country's politics and they're just some underdogs having a go.
