I think there's one already here: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=432028

I know, but mine's a lot more detailed. And I'll be regularly posting the results, tables, stats, etc.

You may be right though, if the mods feel a lock is in order, I won't make much fuss over it.

Odd to see an American caring about football, or soccer, I heard you guys usually get made fun of for such an unbelievable act, lol.

Anyway I reckon either Brazil or Spain will win it, but for yet another year my beloved Northern Ireland didn't even qualify cryani.gif So I guess I have to cheer for England again...

we do, most of the time. Or, at least I do. However there are quite a few British-run pubs around here and I've met quite a few scousers there. "Soccer" is still pretty underground here, but slowly getting it's way up. The CL final the other day was broadcast on basic cable, therefore obtaining much more viewers in more households

There's the usual bunch of favourites for the World Cup but i just can't look past Spain really, can't see a dark horse team doing a 'Greece'.

Argentina had a bit of a sh*tty qualifier round, very unpredictable but they could blossom in the tournament especially with their forward line of Messi, Tevez, Higuain and Milito. Then again with Maradona in charge then f*ck knows what could happen to them.

Holland and Portugal seem to mess up and England will get their usual QF pen shootout knockout tounge.gif. Can see Germany sneaking to the semi's or something but just falling short.

When Spain and Brazil turn it on they can do some damage.

Yeah, obviously Spain and Brazil will do well. Look for Italy to have a strong performance too.

And I'm with LVD, I think an African team will, if I had to choose one to, I'd have to go with Ghana.

Nixon, I just hope we do better than we did in 2006. The painful memories are still there.

And wow, wasn't expecting a pin. wow.gif

My predictions for who'll qualify in each group (sorry for big post but I'm sure you all might do this too tounge.gif):

Group A

South Africa

Mexico

Uruguay

France

Group B

Korea Republic

Greece

Argentina

Nigeria

Group C

England

United States

Algeria

Slovenia

Group D

Serbia

Ghana

Germany

Australia

Group E

Netherlands

Denmark

Japan

Cameroon

Group F

Italy

Paraguay

New Zealand

Slovakia

Group G

Côte d'Ivoire

Portugal

Brazil

Korea DPR

Group H

Honduras

Chile

Spain

Switzerland

Portugal may struggle against a good Ivory Coast team but it will be a tough fight between the two to qualify below Brazil. France will also struggle against South Africa who will be on their home soil and a decent Mexico team but will go through purely because of their class and experience.

Head says Spain or Argentina to win it. Heart says England tounge.gif

Edit: Btw, I realise I said in the other thread Argentina had "no chance" of winning it but I've changed my mind. Milito, Tevez, Aguero, Higuain and Lionel f*ckin' Messi; if Maradona can't manage that embarrassment of attacking riches to atleast the QF or SF it would be a footballing travesty.

And wow, wasn't expecting a pin. wow.gif

Hey, a well constructed topic for a big event deserves a pin. I'll try to help out with editing results and stats once it's all started too. JL25 should be around as well.

Can't wait for this Cup to begin. I'll be pulling hard for Italy again. It may be that a few too many of their players are a bit past their prime, but with their ball control, staunch D and Buffon in the net...I'd say they have as good a shot as any to take it all. I wouldn't be surprised if the old timers have one more miracle run in them.

I read the other day that Ballack is going to miss the entire Cup with a pretty serious ankle injury. Tough break for the Germans. But I still give them a decent chance along with Spain, Brazil and Argentina.

Also, agreed that one of the native teams might make a run at the quarter finals. Ghana was so much fun to watch in the last Cup. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled off a couple of upsets along the way this time around.

Uh? I was going to post some good updates up this week and put a FIFA fantasy league in there too, now I've got some time off work.

Truth be told, there's not been much to update with the regular season only finishing Saturday and thoughts only just turning to 2010.

Never mind, I actually like sackurr.

Nice friendly against England. Although things could've definitely gone better tounge.gif

I caught some of that on TV today, Mexico didn't play badly at all.

USA has a friendly today against Czech Republic. I'm hoping its on TV.

My money is on Spain. But I'll be rooting for Mexico.

PS: Nice friendly against England. Although things could've definitely gone better tounge.gif

To be honest with ya, Mexico deserved to win, England played poor! Rooney didnt get involved at all! The only player that did try and do soemthing for England was Milner, but even still, he never passed aswell as he does, he kept losing the ball....

Good play by Mexico though, they really gave us a match! Loved the style of play they had last night and was really good to watch thier passing!

Aswell as Milner I thought Johnson was trying really hard and was trying to get something going. And Green played terrific in goals.

England need to play much better against Japan although I think the return of the 3 or 4 Chelsea players will help alot, especially in defence.

England will have to really improve if we are to get even close to the final stages in the WC.

Glen Johnson was excellent last night, he must be on the plane. The main disappointment yet again last night was how useless Gerrard was, he was out played most of the night and didnt even look interested which has been the same all season. He will be going but I dont think he should.

England were quite poor in the first half last night, struggling to link up in attack and got sliced in defence to easily from Mexico only for Green to pull off some good stops to save us. The few chances we gave to Mexico last night could easily be game over in the QF's.

I do hope you Yanks make it to South Africa come the 12th June...

I can see us getting done over in the group stages if we play like that. USA are nobody's mugs and given a few chances we could be out before wel start to play.

However I personally think that our second half formation was much better and if we play that at the World Cup we will be more secure. Our midfield needs to press more and our defence needs to step back every now and again and not get caught too tight.

All of our players looked knackered, I think we could do well to export more talent to leagues like Croatia. If those players were to be picked we would have a genuinely fresher squad and a much better chance in my opinion. Unfortunately that requires changing our entire philosophy regarding football, which I can't see ever happening. Shame really.

I am trying to figure out a way of measuring relative importance of all goals scored due to being very bored. Any interest?

OK I have my formula.

I=((1/d if d>=1,1/ABS(d-2) if d<=0)*(1+((1/M)*T)))*(1+(1/s)Where d=A-B

Or if you prefer:

I=W2*(1+(1/s)Where:W2=W1*(1+((1/M)*T))Where:W1=1/d if d>=1      1/ABS(d-2) if d<=0Where:d=A-B

d=difference after game finishedA=Goals Team A scoredB=Goals Team B scoreds=No. of teams left in stage. 2 for final, 32 for group stage etc.T=Time of goalM=Minutes alowed in stage. 90 for group stage, 120 for every other stage.I=Goal importance

I hope people find that at least interesting as I spent the whole of last night thinking that up and I know it isn't perfect but in my honest opinion it measures up well and does what's expected of it.

Czech Republic 4-2 Unites States

And I knew we'd lose when I saw the starting lineup.

I wouldn't really make a big deal of it. We played our reserves on purpose, to see who deserves a spot on the 23-man squad. It would have been good to win, but a loss isn't really surprising.

And, with that said:

Goalkeepers- Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

Defenders- Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Jonathan Spector (West Ham), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA)

Midfielders- Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus), Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca)

Forwards- Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Jozy Altidore (Villarreal) , Herculez Gomez (Pachuca), Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake)

Brian Ching is out, surprisingly. To me, he hasn't really performed that well from what I've seen and I think he's vastly overrated. Good choice from Bob Bradley, imo.

Well Gerrard has had an awful season. And this isn't me being bias as a Chelsea fan but undeniably this year Frankie Lampard has been the far better of the two.

I still can't get over that Terry was striped of the captaincy though, what he did had nothing to do with football, why did he get punished? It makes no sense! It was clearly just suburban mothers getting PO'ed at something that has nothing to do with them. CANCEL YOUR HEAT MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION WOMEN OF BRITIAN!! It's ruining your lives!
