I really don't know why you are having so much trouble. I called today and got my Halo 2 key reset. Only thing they asked was for the key to make sure it was in the database.

LOL nice troll ... I mean nice try.

Call again and they will clear it up for you on how it's done.

Are you actually trying to say that I'm lying? I've had it reset 3 times now without a problem. I'm sure the same can be done with the GTA key. Not like it matters though since the Halo 2 key works with GTA as well.

You are so full of BS and I don't think you know what you are talking about.

I think that may have been true (using a Halo2 key for GTA4) before GFWL 3.0, but it's not true now.

If you try to register GTA4 with a legitimate EFLC key it fails. I've tried to.

If you try to register EFLC with a legitimate GTA4 key it fails. I did this by accident.

I'm pretty sure that GTA4/EFLC with the current GFWL 3.1.99 you must use the key that came with that game, not some other key from some other game.

Have you tried to register GTA4 v1.0.6.0 or EFLC v 1.1.1.0 using the current GFWL with your Halo2 key? I don't think so.

Actually, yes I have.

I'm not talking about the Rockstar activation process. I'm talking about the prompt for a key when you sign in to LIVE. It works perfectly fine, I've tried it twice now. If you don't want to believe me, fine. Go out and buy yourself a copy of HALO 2 and try it for yourself.

Thank you to those who helped.

Don't want to mention names or you

And to the usual trolls, you have been

Quite entertaining. Thanks for the laughs.

Now I go play my game.

Ps. After cpu upgrades and added ram the

The securom DRM has a 5 activation limit and it comes with a revoke tool so you can get back an activation.

Do you have a source for this figure, as I understood the Securom didn't have any activation limit and the revoke license thing was to be used only to make user Securom has left your PC in the state it found it.

Do you have a source for this figure, as I understood the Securom didn't have any activation limit

The closest confirmation I can find of activations limits is in the securom FAQ :-

Q: I get the error message: 'Too many activations on different PCs or too many reactivations on the same PC have been performed...'

A: Please run the revoke tool from the following website and execute it on the PC where you have activated 'Grand Theft Auto IV' before:

Revoke Tool. Unfortunately, we are unable to increase your activation limit. Please contact the Rockstar Games Support via the official support website http://www.rockstargames.com/support/ regarding your request

https://support.securom.com/pop_gtaiv.html

So there is clearly a numerical limit to how many activations you can have with GTA 4 after all if we had unlimiited activations why would we ever run out of them ?. I was unable to find a specific quote from Rockstar about how many times you can activate the game due to securom. I believe the 5 activations comes from other games that use the same method of protection and have a 5 simultaneous activation limit.

and the revoke license thing was to be used only to make user Securom has left your PC in the state it found it.

Nope the revoke tool is there to revoke activations when you run the revoke tool it clearly states that it is contacting the authentication server with the intention of removing one of the activations. Now it may also remove securom from your PC I can't remember but it's main job is to free up one of your activations so you don't run out.

Something I find odd, is: How are people running out of activations? I mean are people giving there copy to friends to install on their PC or what?-lol. It doesn't make sense, because who has 15 or more PC's(besides offices).? If you have to re-install your OS that much, or un-install/re-install the game that much, as to use 15 activations, you either have a serious Virus issue, or a serious PC problem.? If you must change out your hard drive or something, you can always "back up" your game to an external hard drive, they are really cheap now a days, and then you can simply run the game from that. I used to do that exclusively(spelling?) on my old desktop that had a small hard drive size and had no problems running games that way.(that right there would save an activation) and can be used if you had to re-install your OS, since the external hard drives can be disconnected while the OS is installing, and thus will not be affected by the re-install. I have two external hard drives that I have used with XP(started with this), Vista, and 7, and they still work great without problems-these are different PC's too. There is an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"-which basically means if the game is working right, why un-install/change it.? The only reason I see to un-install games anyway, is if the game is not working right, other than that, just keep it installed, and there won't be a need to worry about activation limits. the above saying also applies to re-installing the OS, why do people see the need to re-install/re-format the OS, unless you have a virus(es) or a serious PC problem.? Those are the only two valid reasons that it actually makes sense to re-install the OS, unless you change out the hard drive and have to install the OS on the new one. It just doesn't make sense. Just Curious about this.? confused.gif

There is NOTHING odd about running out of activations, it can easily be done just by doing day to day stuff on your PC. I do not do an annual reinstall but I have guesstimated I have about 7 GFWL activations left on one of my copies of GTA 4 and that is only because I BOUGHT a second copy. If I didn't have 2 copies of GTA 4 I could have easily hit the activation limits by now just via normal use. Here is a summary of how the activations got wasted :-

1 activation on windows XP

1 activation on Vista (was running a dual booting PC)

1 activation on windows XP on a second PC upstairs

1 activation to install GTA 4 to Win 7 RC beta

1 activation to install GTA 4 to Win 7 Retail (no you couldn't upgrade from the beta it had to be a fresh install).

1 activation to reinstall the game after patch 1.0.5.0 when the game refused to work

1 activation to install GTA 4 again after a hard disc failure

1 activation to install GTA 4 to the PC again after a Ram failure and I lost my OS through a bit of carelessness.

So that is 8 GFWL activations I have used so far, I still have at least 3 securom activations because where possible I used the revoke tool to revoke an activation. The two I lost were down to hardware failure and nothing I could do about it. In the future I am likely to lose 2 more GFWL activations as well :-

1 activation to install GTA 4 to my PC when I upgrade the cpu and motherboard

1 activation to install GTA 4 when Microsoft releases Windows 8

Now your idea of "backing the game" up will not help you with losing activations and certainly will not let you play on line without re-activating the game. You seem to be confusing activations with re-installing the game, there is no problem with uninstalling and reinstalling the game it has unlimited "uninstalls/reinstalls". The problem is ACTIVATIONS if your game needs to be activated then there is nothing you can do to prevent or preserve them.

It is easy to see how people can run out of activations, as I said the only reason why I haven't is because I have two copies of the game (well three now). It is ridiculous in this day and age for users to have activation limits which they cannot control on the PC. I am not against activation limits and all in all I am reasonably happy with the way securom does the activation limits because I can MANAGE them and ensure I never run out. However there is nothing I can do about GFWL activation limits, one day soon one of my copies of GTA 4 will be nothing more than a coaster simply because GFWL will not let me manage my activations.

Simply put, I am not you and i live a life that you can not fathom.

I will bring close to my light.

Life sucks sometimes and things don't go your way.

Ok I really wanted to leave it there.. That would have been hilarious.

I would suggest you roll back a page or two and see that I have

covered this. Really I can't bother doing all that sometimes myself.

Why read so many posts just to get that one simple answer. Right ?

simply put, to keep you from having to dig a few pages back.

I like a fresh install when I test products.

Didn't know about a live limit.

It's a fine print scam that m$ slipped in there.

Should say that crap in big bold while gfwl games are installed.

I'm talking size 40 or greater font.

I have been flicking through the pages and I am appalled at MicroCrotch and R* for this restriction. I hope TruXter has problem-free gaming from now on, and I hope tat by the time he uses up his activations SOMEBODY would have fixed this issue.

It is indeed VERY EASY to use up 15 activations. Computers can have their disks fail, viruses wipe out the OS, upgrades that render a current installation of GTA IV useless for MP. Heck even GTA IV patches have caused problems!

I only play GTA:SA and I can tell you that I have reinstalled the game over 15 times without the fault being mods or any sort of hack, usually it has been due to virus attacks, hardware failures, and just random failures in the game itself. I have easily reinstalled the game over 40 times total. Also note that I have reinstalled over 15 times due to general problems on ONE, SINGLE machine. It is inevitable that if I installed on other machines, I would have to reinstall on them sooner or later too.

Security measures such as this 15 activation limit are prime examples in the reason why piracy is more and more popular. Recently, Activision spent MILLIONS on developing a system to prevent piracy of Assassins Creed 2, one article reported that Activision literally challenged the pirates to crack the game and be able to use it, not long after, the same news provider reported that the pirates had answered the call with a working crack of the game.

In the world of the legitimate customer, playing A.C.2 required a constant connection to the internet, even on SP. this was because each part of the game was encrypted, and for the PC to read the data it would have to contact a dedicated Activision server to receive the keys of that day. It all sounds good on paper, but the reality is that if there is any fault in the connection, be it a wireless dropping out, or a lightning storm affecting an ISP, customers would be instantly booted off the game without warning. Needless to say, the legitimate customers were furious, and the game found itself being returned in droves and sales plummeting. Meanwhile, the pirates working relentlessly to find a crack that Activision could not patch over. From what I heard, the pirates succeeded, and people are playing AC2 illegally, happily, and are enjoying the game most of them PAID for. Who was hurt in this multi-million anti-piracy flop? The legitimate customer. Who ultimately gained nationwide popularity and more support? The pirates. And who became the 'Sheriff of Nottingham', the bad guy? Activision did.

Piracy is going to be around forever, to an extent it can be reduced, but it should never cause immense headaches to the legitimate customer.

Ok my last post was pure sarcasm and a touch of reality. I hope you all got that.

Mattatatta.

I know the only solution to piracy is pride.

You know it, we all know it. If it was not for pride, there wouldn't be so many macfags and Itunes would have never made any money.

How did itunes launch? Simple. They sold you small pieces for a tiny price (singles). The price was low enough that you could say (in a snobbish yuppie wanna be british like), "My god man, why are you pirating when the price is so low". Truth is I think that move alone helped with the shutdown of kazza and a few other piracy farms. I mean no one even bothered to pirate, why risk it when the price is so dang good. No telling if apple kicked out some money to riaa to get the ball rolling. Timing sure was good but who knows all of that.

See it would take a huge move on R* to make the cost as low to them as possible so they can ship the products at a price we apreciate.

LOl really and truly . we paid $7 per install.

so if they sold the disk from the beginning at $10 and made it clear that you only get one install (eek that would be a gamble, soooo many newbs want to blame everything on manufactures) and assured you that you can get your account activated to as many installs as you can afford, for $4 for each following install. That pricing would be fair. I could go for that. As long as the cover says YOU GET ONE INSTALL, DO NOT EVER UNINSTALL THIS GAME IT WILL NOT WORK.

Now here is where the pride part comes in.

It has to be a group thing. R* people head to the nods section and find the best mods and modders and put them on missions to build the next game ( that would explain the low price and low risk) meanwhile R*T is busy actually making the crappy mods workable. and that could be the next gta .. lol

Ok that is far fetched. but it's that kind of crap that keeps people from wanting to pirate.

Interaction is a great form of promotion.

You don't steal from people who know you and realize that you are decent person. You just Fn don't.

That beats yuppie pride triple fold.

impossible to make happen though .

and no it's not an R* and m$ thing. It is a m$ thing only. i really got to talk to some really cool people at m$ and what small call I got with Take 2, I pretty much get a good idea who's fault it is. Considering it's gfwl that would not let me sign in till got another key. I was getting ready to crack it. I mean i paid for it. it's mine, until that disk is gone or damaged, it's mine. in that case i will gladly buy another.

This whole 15 installs thing, just hurts the customers.

They all have the whole anti-piracy thing all wrong.

You are dismissing this whole thread with your statements when you haven't been following it. Saying you don't agree with the 15 install limit, yet calling it whining to communicate on the subject, puts you in one of two categories 1. a person with a huge defeatist personality (what can I do about it? I will just submit and accept the ways I can work with it) 2. a troll (I will start an argument and see how I can carry it on). If either, please do me a favor and find another place to do either. I feel quite strongly about a loss of rights.

You can say I don't have rights, but you might forget that I am a consumer. Pleasing the consumer is goal one. Unhappy consumers alert their friends. Sure tards will come along and call them babies or say they are whining, most know those people are just near sited tards and or trouble makers.unhappy consumers tend to shy away when the "new and improved" is brought to market . I know as defeatist your instant impulse is to think that there are millions of new that are willing to take my place. Sure as long as they are not informed. Plus if you have a product would you only want the new? or would you want the new and the return?

Screw anyone who thinks it is ok to have to wait a week for a new key. and screw anyone who thinks that key will be just handed out to anyone and everyone on a regular basis. Why would they even put a cap on it if they intend to just toss them out? On that note, screw anyone who says I can not install from a disk I purchased, it's content onto my personal computer as many times as it takes for me to finally be comfortable. Screw anyone who tells me that it is wrong to not like having a fresh install of an operating system after every upgrade I do to my computer. You have no idea how bad I hate the whole live addition and no chance to re-use my current saves, after my next format and upgrade. Sure they give us some useless Live points that I couldn't give half a wet squirrel fart about, so they have to prevent people from ripping off the system by using someone else's saves. I have been in the liveless thread and the saved games thread I even created my own thread asking for assistance in understanding how to load saves without live. No one responded.

I don't play Grand Theft Auto to live up to m$ standards. I play to see this amazing game that Rockstar games created and that Toronto made available for the pc.

I am under the impression that this place is in no way a reflection of what it used to be. People helped each other, flaming threads was not an option, more people actually solved their own issues instead of just straight up saying the game is broke and sucks. Where my thread here differs from the rest, is i enjoy the game, the game is wonderful, the game is the best there is. But the bundled garbage that m$ convinced them to bundle is a huge hamper and diminishes the quality.

Online play would amaze you if you try samp or mtavc. There is no need for m$. There is an online mass of people who play grand theft auto from GTAIII to GTASA without the use of m$ servers or live.

The moment Rockstar releases a patch that allows us to host our own games and sends out their version of xliveless, I have three parts computers I will snap together for a 24-7 game server. 8mbs up.

Ok I have typed enough. Say your one line sentence in retort so this thread can be buried and you can feel as if you have done something justifiable.

Whatever, it's clear you have no idea what you are talking about when you resort to name calling.

I don't see why you would have to wait and entire week for a new key, or why you would need a new one anyway when they can simply reset the key over the phone. I'm not saying they didn't give you one, because it's very possible you were on the phone with some moron over at M$ who didn't know what he/she was doing. I can't have that many activations left on my key, so when it runs out I'll give them a call and see what happens. With it being the same activation server for most LIVE games, including Halo 2, and Gears of War they should just reset it for you. The halo 2 key has been reset 3 times now and works like a charm. As long as you have proof that it was your game there shouldn't be a problem with it.

If you want to get mad about a system, look no further than Ubifail... I mean Ubisoft. The new activation scheme over there is going to require you to be online AT ALL TIMES to even play the damn games. That is more ridiculous than having to call and get a key reset.

No matter what us PC players do, developers are going to keep trying different methods to stop piracy (Which they will continue failing at). Piracy wins everytime, and will continue to do so.

Piracy does not always win. no one pirates itunes garbage.

And yes I know very well what I have had to go through. that is pretty much what this thread is.

if I need a reminder, I can just open this thread. It states and explains exactly what I went through.

I have no idea why I am responding to a flamer. I guess I am giving you the benefit of doubt.

Considering your rude remarks, it is much more than you deserve.

If you do not like the thread, your problem is solved with just one click. I again request you figure

out what click I am suggesting.

What I posted are true happenings, they are here to inform people of what is before them.

If you do not like it, move along. When it is your turn, you do not have to come back and apologize.

but true suggestions on how to better this issue are more than welcome.

why???? because it isn't worth it to pirate itunes.

Yeah buying three copies of the same game seems wrong on a lot of levels. You get f*cked by the company, and still continue to pay them. How is that justifiable? Whether or not the game is cheap now is irrelevant. Rockstar is incredibly retarded for adopting such a system.

Oh and guys, pirated copy != lost sale.

You are correct.

but I am quite certain the 15 install cap, is all m$. it's the allure of gfwl that put the cap on us. clearly m$ gets a % of the sales.

gfwl was the death of the pc version launch. the whole negativity on launch was started with gfwl, it just snowballed from there.

You really need to read what people say before spouting off at the mouth. You still have replied about why iTunes was brought into this conversation.

I never said the 15 install limit worked or that I liked it, it's there to 'prevent' piracy, and it fails on all levels while doing so. They have it in place so you can't just pass around your key and have your friends use it, because yes it can be done and you can be online at the same time. That combined with the fact that the Halo 2 keys will pass GFWL activation make the limit complete BS, but it can still be reset with a phone call was my point.

TruXter, nobody is arguing with you, I simply asked you what iTunes was brought into this topic for, and you completely ignored the comment. You say it isn't worth it to pirate itunes.

What exactly did you mean by that? iTunes itself is free, some Apps are free, but with a jailbroken device you can find most any app you want cracked online. The same goes for music. Any music file can be imported to iTunes and your iPod, so what exactly did you mean?

Nobody is flaming you or trolling you, I asked a simple question and you ignored it and resorted to name calling and ignoring everything being asked. Seems you are the troll to me.

just the fact that this thread has gone 6 pages shows that some people have far to much time and too many useless off topic things to say. Truxter i am glad your game is working again, now we all know what to do (by the way pm me the phone number, i have 2 keys i need to reactivate) otherwise this thread should be locked.

lol, it's in the first post. don't call take two, you can hear the palm to face when you call.

crap no it isn't will get it and put in first post and pm it to you

You have to post in here the day you call, and the day you get the new keys.

would help solve a little issue of people saying tehy will be reset with a click or not.
