Truxter, just buy a new one. Sucks it has to happen, but at least you've posted this grievance so to make everyone in-the-know about this.

God some of you are taking this way too hard. Call them and they will reset it if you ask nicely. It's not that hard to do. I personally love LIVE.

Ok for starts.

I admit, my first GTA game I pirated, but I loved it so much I bought me a copy and a copy for my GF. She never touched, So I gave it to my next girlfriend, She never touched it I gave it to my son. I have bought two copies for pc and one for xbox for my son each release.

This issue is not a Rockstar issue. Pirating it out of spite, is only going to hurt R* and never make a point because m$ doesn't need their percent of my $$.

The reason I lost so many Revocations, is well I betatest a mess load of stuff and I tweak a lot of stuff and I observe many many sites. Not like your regular average user. I have blue screened so many times and cratered hard drives and have just simply had no choice but to format, and well a revoke would not be an option.15 times, is ridiculous. The only way I could feel it fair, is if the disk would vanish after fifteen times. see now I am stuck with one really cool looking drink coaster.

I love the game. The game has only twice been the reason i formatted. and those two times I had just got the game and did not know about the revoke. I changed operating systems maybe 8 times in two weeks. Everyone kept saying this and that o/s was best. Some of you clowns are delirious.

so in the end, the people who created the piece of crap operating system that happens to be the virus farm it is, wobbly un sturdy peice of crap that it is, own the rights and install limits to the disk I brought home for $60 last year.

I wish GTA would come bundled in it's own personal version linux (Xandros is quite tiny) be shipped on a bootable thumb drive. Screw apple and m$ I couldn't tell you which one of them two is worse.

Dude that might be the coolest or worst idea ever.

If they are unique.

I am certain they are all exactly same number.

When I called about my Halo 2 I supplied them the part # on the DVD and that's all they asked for.

I am uncertain. if I call and get the same lil dork, I will scream at him.

If I have to, I will gladly buy another one. That is not a problem.

The only problem is, I know people pirate the game. They are out nothing.

I did not pirate the game, I am out $60

I never finished the game. I get sick of restarting the dang game so it sits on the shelf for a month, then I start again.

That is further proof I did not steal the game, because I can't back up my saves. Mine is completely un modified.

Oh, FYI... I can not save in single player, I can not update to 1.0.6.0 I have tried the xbox link and the game will not launch. I have had to install and uninstall three times to confirm this.

This rejection will not let me sign in to live at all. I will work on a screenshot, or a pic with cell cam if i get black screenshot.

Wow, so when it asks me to revoke I just close and uninstall, so I can only uninstall 15 times then I am f*cked? Why don't someone crack this or something, it really shows you can't keep the game long to show your kids, you "wont" have any reinstalls left. I always f*ck up modding after reading this, it scares me I am never gonna install a mod again. f*ckin' hell

You can always use xliveless, that way you will be able to save games, and update (using the published patch 6 at R's website). Of course no MP, but at least it's something.

Did you contact Rockstar about this ? I am sure they will say that they don't have any control over GFWL, but they COULD just get you a new key, for the sake of treating their customers the way they should be treated...

Did you contact Rockstar about this ?

I called Taketwo before I called gfwl.

Toronto messaged me asking what the situation was

I paraphrased.

Of course I got the message after work, so he/she was gone

by the time I got the message no telling what their work hours are.

I'm not doing anything till after I get a response. Don't want to complicate things.

I don't understand why MS GFWL would limit your installs of the retail disk version of the game. It's possible the issue could be resolved just by speaking to the 'right' person.

It quite clearly says on the back of the retail disk box: "unlimited installs". Point that out to a GFWL representative next time you have an opportunity.

My discussion here does not address the fact that a downloaded version may have a different license, that license may limit the number of installs (although I don't know why it should).

The very principal of GFWL is that if you have a valid game key you could run your game on any computer, you already have to lock the game to your personal Live account and personal e-mail address. What possible difference does it make that you reinstalled it a number of times on the same machine?

I have in the past had my computer hardware fail to the point of having to change out the motherboard. This looks like a different computer to some software, particularly Windows OS, even so I'm able to reauthenticate the Windows OS - I have a valid license and I am the same person that originally licensed it. Why is a game, particularly if managed through GFWL, any different?

I thought that the game key along with my (locked - grr) GFWL account ensured that I could freely play the game I purchased (well, I purchased a license) for forever.

In the case of the "unlimited installs" which is printed on the back of the retail disk box, I would think the publisher is by law obligated to resolve this issue with GFWL. So either R* or Take2 needs to have a conversation with GFWL. Anything less than unlimited installs could be considered to be false advertising or bait-and-switch for which the US laws have specific remedies. I would think the EU laws have similar provisions.

Technical details:

Revoking the SecuRom license does not apparently revoke the GFWL license.

The GFWL license for this game (GATIV or EFLC) is apparently permanent and locked to me as a person. Again I take that to mean in the common law sense that my license to run the game is for forever so far as that is technically possible.

Yeah more like bold screen of deceit. Because that's what it is, they promise unlimited activations (and it says so explicitly in both IV and EFLC manual) but apparently it's nowhere near unlimited. Hence the deceit.

I find it funny as well that my Gears of War key was used on 2 different LIVE accounts and both still work and can be online at the same time without an issue.

Microsoft has failed at any security when it comes to GFWL. Just demand them to reset your key and go on about your business.

i for one having a higher end machine and being a true gamer's gamer that wants every ounce of performance out my system will often reformatt every 2 - 4 months depending on my usage/abuse of my machine. and their are a great many of us gamers and enthusiasts that will. i have 7 copies og gta iv (i do have many computers too), but of those 7 2 of them are out of GFWL activations even though i revoked every single activation through securom. for me it is a mater of just buying another copy when i need, they are cheap enough.

i have also made back ups of games like this, that if needed can now restore every entry and the associated programs so i do not need to activate anymore, and is in no way imoral or illegal. but that too takes some know how of what files, programs and registry entries to back up. but now i wont lose any more activations either way.

but yes games for windows is greedy like that, and i dont know a way around it after the fact.

can you drop us some info on what file and reg locations mate ? smile.gif

Well I have done every single thing I could think of.

I have installed win7 64 - win7 32

xp, xp64, vista, vista 64

Each time deleted partitions using win-dos 3 and command fdisk

and an actual format c: command.

I even tried using killdisk. To confirm there are no low level rootkits or

crazy bottom end files left behind that win7's crappy formatting couldn't remove.

I am currently on vista ultimate 32 . FAIL.

Time for me to google up some Xliveless

Dang, I don't want to use any third party aps to make it work..

Wait, you can't even start the game or what? You can create an offline account and do that through LIVE, but won't be able to play online.

Just got phone call from gfwl, gave all information I could, so they can have a heads up. I am at work. So I can't do anything useful.

I requested they call at 5pm american central time. They said it would be fine. Told me there might be a two hour window, meaning they could be very busy at exactly five. I'm fine with that. I will be home the whole time anyway.

Sorry if I typoed in this... on cell phone.

Just got off phone again with the gfwl people.

These people are actually quite nice.

I have no idea what was up with the other guy.

Maybe I interrupted his game. if he is not supposed to be gaming, then he should be.

It's fricking gaming company...am I right?

had me take a photo of my game disks, cd key, hand written live email addy.

I still don't have the reciept but they wanted proof of purchase.

SoOOO I did what "whitetigerswt " suggested and took a pic of the back of the case showing the proof of purchase stamp on the barcode.

I suggested it to the tech support guy, he didn't say if it would work or not, I didn't give him the chance. I butted in with "I bought it a year ago."

I am really not out to "stick it to the m$". I just want a better understanding of what I purchased.

If what I purchased is actually limited to 15 installs, then I am disappointing with m$ and disappointing with R* for letting them do that to this game.

Man, what did it all, was i just figured out how to open my new video card at x16 speed when I had a vid driver issue and BSOD.

So I never got to play the game at the fastest my new video card can handle. I was actually quite content with x8

buuuuuuuuuuut the whole idea of even more speed made me root around.

FYI the XFX 750 A motherboard is a beast. but it is 1997 complicated. So many jumpers for o/c and configuration. Not for the newb.

One slight jumper issue and you crash. takes forever to recover unless you remember every single thing you changed.

Well here I am with my machine panting wanting to try it again..

Guess I will go play gtaiii or need for speed carbon.. I never actually finished carbon. oh on that note, nfs undercover has install limits also. Found out in my searches.

Then you'll have to sit down with Bill and explain why you want to play GFWL so bad then write a 2000 word essay on why M$ should rule the gaming world then give them 2 pints of blood ,proof of birth ,and 1 urine sample.

On that note, you can't pass on your games in fair trade anymore.

Well, got a call today saying that my pictures will "probably be accepted" and that they need to run some tests..

Tests? What in the heck is there to test?

But ok. I am good with knowing that there is something being done.

But I am not happy that this is an issue at all.

This stuff only hurts the paying customers and gives the game crackers and pirates an addition to their gaming thrill.

If they bypass this crap, then they have achieved something. Well most likely they will bypass this crap.

We all know they will and we all know they have already. We all know it takes less time to reverse engineer than it does to create.

So we all know who gets hurt in a 15 install cap.

Especially if the cap is created by the same people (well the same company, but different branch) who created the operating system

required for the install. It just seems like they have to much say of what the heck I am doing.

Thank god my internet provider is comcast and they have no plans to put a cap on the limit of bandwidth per month </sarcasm>
