Guys have you tried turning your clip capture on? for me it minimized the exagerated object pop-ins when its on. pop-ins is still there but its better compaired if its off. just try it.

can someone tell me what this command line does?

-reservedApp 0

I might be wrong, but I believe it determines whether the application runs in reserved memory pool for applications set aside by the OS, or not. I think it may or may not govern whether the application runs in reserved memory space or not?!

Perhaps Rockstar has the answer for this?

John

Thanks for the answer John, didn't make much sense though, can you dumb it down and briefly explain the benefits of doing this, if possible. happy.gif

I think on XP, Vista and 7 x86 without the commandline GTA IV will allocate 2GB of RAM and run within this reserved space.

(and I think it is 4GB on x64 systems).

Setting the commandline ReservedApp to 0 may either let you specify how much RAM it sets aside by using the memrestrict command, or it just sets aside what it can find and take!?

Only Rockstar knows the real answer wink.gif

John

Alright thanks.

Not sure if i need to use it or not.Have vista 64, 4 gig ram, and a 1 gig vid card. whatsthat.gif

just out of curiousity, anyone here "not" experiencing texture popping? As in the textures actually appears smoothly in your EFLC.

I hope there's a fix, but at the same time I think it's pretty clear this was an intentional move on R*'s part. I'm just not sure why it was made at this juncture as the performance of the game definitely has improved over the course of the patches, and if the only reason they did this was because they changed the shadows engine, then that's a pretty poor decision in my opinion. If improving the shadows meant creating texture pop-in, doesn't seem to be a trade-off worth making. Hopefully either 1) a solution is found, or 2) another patch is released to offset this.

What part is the stutter?

Here is another video which shows the problem more clearly.

vid2

Again all I saw was you hit your brakes when all the cars stopped at the intersection.

Clearly you can see the lag/stutter as the car is moving around the middle part of the video. Maybe you're used to that sort of lag if you cannot spot it?

Must be. LOL

When the front end dives down and the back wheels smoke, it's not lag.

Now I see lag on my machine sometimes, when I have other processes running starting and stopping. like updates for adobe, vista updates and so on.

^You do not notice all the other traffic 'stutter by' in the background? This has been confirmed by R* as "probably a frame buffering issue" and is being investigated by Ati.

I don't experience any texture pop in at all and I have Detail Distance and View Distance set to 80. Previously I had both set to 40 and still had no issues. I can ride / drive fast with no issues at all.

Nah I watched just the vehicle you where using. sorry. My bad.

I really thought you were saying that each time you stopped, it was lag.

Did my best not to scream... Again, my bad .

can the texture popping be a video card driver issue?

On that statement. I have noticed that since I installed the latest Nvidia video drivers

(gtaiv unrelated.... maybe)

When I play hd flash videos and select full screen, the video freezes.

There may be an issue with Nvidia drivers.

Might... i stress Might....

be related to some of the weird texture issue I get when walking in doors and in deep sunken allyways

and the distorted trees

when i have game video settings higher than default.

Hello guys, I am running a dual-boot system (XP + 7) and when installed on the Win 7 EFLC + the patch the same sh*tty problem appeared. But when I installed it on the Xp the game was smooth and there were no textute popping, even it was running slightly better. Till now its ok, hope it will continue doing so.

I've got an i7 920 @ 3.8 GHz and a Radeon 4870 X2. Sure it's not the best card out there today but when GTA IV PC came out, it was pretty big deal. You guys STILL haven't been able to get the other 1GB of FREE RAM (2x 1GB GDDR5) available since this card is basically crossfired.

C'mon Rockstar, I paid full retail for a standalone copy of EFLC even though I own the GTA IV PC boxed copy, AND I own a launch date copy of GTA IV (PS3).

That's an SLI issues and nothing to do with Rockstar. SLI doesn't combine vram, so really you all ways have the vram on one card not both.

Of course SLI/Crossfire doesn't combine VRAM, and I'm no coder but I think autodetecting systems with SLI/Crossfire enabled through software and splitting texture load on both banks of memory wouldn't be that hard to do from THEIR end.

It's up to ROCKSTAR to make Crossfire/SLI systems work because it is THEIR software that's having trouble accessing the hardware.

That would be impossible because of the way sli and crossfire works. Only ATi and Nvidia would be able to make a system that does something like that. But they won't and the reason why is because that would most likely negatively effect performance since a HUGE amount of data will be constantly swapped back and forth over the pci express bus. And it's simply not fast enough to handle something like that.

lmao, SO WHY ARE THESE MULTI GPU SINGLE BOARD CARDS BEING PRODUCED IF NO ONE CAN MAKE USE OF THE EXTRA MEMORY?

Why not just make 4870 X2 1GB EDITION and that's it? Clearly other software producers can make use of the hardware and others can't. Given the track record of Rockstar's history of GTA IV, I think it's safe to play the "We did a crappy port and our job is only to do damage control, not tweak and enhance PC specific PC hardware" card. Besides, ATI and nVidia's role is hardware design. Not software so why would it be their job for any of this? Their job is only to make sure the hardware works and if it didn't it would've been addressed like the infamous ATI long loading times for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

The way sli and crossfire works is that the stuff in the vram of one gpu is copied in the vram of the other gpu and both gpus work from their own personal copy of pool of vram. That is simply the way it works through the drivers you download from ATi and Nvidia(Yes They DO make software, it's their software that controls their hardware), you can't work around it period. It's impossible. Just get it through your head, no one can change this.

The fact that everything is copied between both gpus is one of the reasons why things speed up. Seeing how you bought a $400+ peace of computer hardware you should at least KNOW how it works. Yes the guys selling it say it's a 2GB card, but they are purposely saying that to get more people to buy the card. Only 1GB is usable. Yeah it should be advertised as a 1GB card, but on the otherhand you should at least know this basic fact about such an expensive purchase.

The point, is that everything was fine when some poeple used patch 4, and some patch 5. We could decide which patch would be the best for our computers. Tha game ran very well. Now, we can't decide if we want this patch 6, or not. Some people like this patch, but those who don't like it, because of texture problems, can't do anything... The EFLC isn't entertaining now for me, rather annoying...I tried everything, nothing changed...and I don't think R* will make a new patch...We have to bow to it...

Yeah, they were only keeping up with the patches because of the EFLC's. Otherwise patch 3 or 4 would've been the last. Maybe they'll do one last patch since so many people are complaining about patch 6.

Midnight Special

I solved my problem. Pop-ins, lag and stuttering. All of them dissapeared. I don't know how it'll work for you but try it:

Create the commandline.txt in EFLC folder if you haven't already.

Put these lines in the commandline.txt

-nomemrestrict

-norestrictions

-percentvidmem 1.0

-availablevidmem 2.5

It worked for me. Don't blame me if it doesn't work for you. Cheers smile.gif

Well I didn't test it for a long period of time to see if it creates any issues like crashes and/or textures messing up, but yes this did solve the pop-in issue for me. Short term at least. Hopefully on extended play it doesn't create any other issues.

ERM!!!

-nomemrestrict = no restrictions for your memory

-norestrictions = is the exact same thing

-percentvidmem 1.0 = sets your video restriction to 100% which is not necessary

-availablevidmem 2.5= sets your video restriction to 250% which totally kills previous setting.

It appears that my texture pop-in has been fixed by adding the 2 command lines R* Toronto provided me with in this very thread. It is clear now that I was wrong in all my assumptions and R* Toronto was right. The problem so many people are having is apparently due to specific hardware configurations and not changes in memory management. I'm truely sorry for reporting this so late but there was so much going on I couldn't find time for it.

@ R* Toronto: Thank you so much for fixing my problem. I'm also sorry for making incorrect assumptions. The OP has now been modified to reflect this fact. Hopefully this thread will help other people solve their issues with the game.

OutOfTimer, which two commandlines are they? Can you tell us? Thank You!

R* Toronto specifically stated these are designed for my hardware configuration only. You have to make your own. That being said, it might be beneficial to know that just those two fixed my problem.

-reservedApp 0

-memrestrict 943718400

this was the command that 'disabled' the pop-in for me. the cons are that my fps dropped and there is stuttering now

What I see with my fix is that there are no cons at all. I have no idea how this is possible but the pop-in is simply gone and that's it. R* Toronto said my game's memory management would be just like it was with Patch 1.0.3.0 and it feels just like it. I would recommend finding a similar solution with perhaps the same command line but only different values.

Glad to hear this has fixed your issues. Unfortunately they are still present on mine.

I do get some pop-in on foot, but to be fair most of it is when driving fast or in a chopper. I've compared it to a few of my old patch 5 videos, and notice the following.

1) Objects in the distance appear to "blur" into view. Now they are rendered instantly which makes it much more noticable.

2) Objects are rendered at a much closer distance to the player model, as opposed to being far away.

The game is playable, but this still not as attractive as under the previous patches, with equivalent graphics settings.

@vabellabel - I believe reservedapp0 means that no memory is allocated to other applications, so this prevents background processes from hogging resrouces.

R* expalined above how to set the memrestrict value, but it is perhaps worth repeating as it has dissapeared into the myriad of pages on the thread. Basically, you choose the amount of vram you want to declare in meg and multiply it by 1024 twice.

So OutofTimer's command is for 900mb (*1024*0124=943718400). Set the value too high and you may get stuttering. Set it too low and you may get increased popin.

I think that's right, just repeating what others have stated elsewhere, but I'm not an expert on this!
