GTA IV (PS3) - Best Resolution

Yeah, I was researching and found out that 720p is far superior to 1080i since it's progressive and has a better look to it when playing fast paced games such as FPS/Grand Theft Auto. The only thing 1080i would be good for is a slow paced game like Tiger Woods PGA Tour or whatever those games are called.

Just a helpful tip for you all. If you have a 1080p capable TV, go for that as it's the best format of them all, but if you can run 720p, do that. Ignore 1080i.

Yes, you are totally right. For the people who want to know how it works:

Hah, that's the video I was actually referring to tounge2.gif

Thanks for posting that video. It would be really neat to help some of the people with PS3 out to get the most out of their PS3's capabilities.

720p Is the second best format. And if I'm not mistake is IV's native format.

What the hell, people only just found this out??? Of course 720p is better for gaming*!! 1080p is better, but not many games support that properly or well. Oh and the PS3 version of GTA IV runs at 640p and is upscaled to 720p.

*on the consoles, yeah, I can hear you PC fans running to gun down that comment tounge.gif

Yeah, I actually just found that out last night. I've fully re-formatted my PS3 and set my TV at 720p. Hopefully this fixes some of the lag issues that I've been having with GTA. It will look a lot smoother now. Interlaced is garbage. I recommend everyone upgrading to Progressive. Interlaced is what we used to play Vice City/III/ And SA on.

Of course you can get a PC to max out 1080p to my understanding.

Erm, ...yeah, the lag isn't caused by the resolution, the scaling is done outside of the games engine, GTA IV renders at 640p, it's then upscaled by the PS3 to 720p or 1080i, neither have a performance impact on the actual game engine. As for your laughable second comment, there is a big difference between 1080i and 480i/576i that the PS2/Xbox outputted and even then GTA was rendered at 640x440. And yes, a PC connected to a HDTV with decent hardware will handle 1080p on games fine, of course having a monitor with a higher native resolution means you can go even higher.

sh*tty screen quality is caused by resolution. And that does impact the game If I'm not mistaken. I have also fully reformatted my PS3 so I highly doubt that will be a problem.

And I'm sorry I'm not a cyber geek like you. No need to call a comment that I make out because I don't understand laughable.

I'm sorry, just seeing I guess average people try and explain this sort of thing is funny to me, again, the resolution the console displays does not impact the actual game engine, it may impact how you look at the game, but the game is exactly the same, frame rate, etc, in either 720p or 1080i, so any frame rate drops and graphical glicthes in the game would happen on both resolutions as the console is just scaling the sourced content to your chosen resolution. The 360 does the same, you'll notice the 360 claims to run GTA at 1080p, it doesn't, the game renders at 720p on that console and when 1080p is selected, it just scales it larger before outputting to your TV, again, done outside of the game engine.

Your point is that 1080i looks worse for gaming, which is true, as most HD READY TV's and certainly FULL HDTV's are Progressive panels, so feeding them an interlaced source means they have to do an extra job of de-interlacing and depending on the TV, some could do a very bad job of that, and since the game is sourced as progressive, interlacing that and de-interlacing it is obviously a huge waste of time and degrading of the image quality.

No offense taken. Would washing a PS3 disc with water be of any harm?

Speaking of HD.. I just bought a 32" Full 1080p HD LCD for my room biggrin.gif Now I just gotta buy them HD cables. My 360 has component cables that are 720p, and it looks so good. But my PS3 looks a bit blurry with the AV things

The standard AV cable that comes with the PS3 ISN'T a HD Cable, so your PS3 will currently only be 576i if you're using them, upgrade to a HDMI cable for the thing and set it to 1080p, don't worry, the PS3 is smart with these things and auto-adjusts the Game Resolution to match source, for example, mine is set to 1080p so XMB/Blu-ray films, etc are 1080p, but most games will revert the output to 720p automatically.

720p Is if I'm not mistaken is IV's native format.

Yes it is. And it's practically all games native resolution. Using 1080p for gaming now isn't necessarily better as it's still just an upscale. It'll be really nice once computers become more powerful and the price of them go down abit so all gaming developer studios can get them...

Making a game as big as GTA with a 1080p native practically isn't possible now, as it would take up way more space then they have, and also problably be to much for the computers to handle...

But maybe in a couple of years smile.gif

Actually i would suggest people try 1080i over 720p on some tvs for gta 4 because i dont recognize any quality degradation or slow down, or "slow to catch up" imagery people keep taking about with 1080i. i play ps3 gta 4 with an hdmi cable and a samsung hpt5054 720p/1080i tv.........

Yes, the FPS can drop sometimes. Rockstar pushes consoles to their limits with open-world games. They set they traffic density, draw distance, and other variables to levels that a console can usually handle, but sometimes too many things happen at once.

Does the PS3 have an auto select option like the 360?

I've tried 1080I on the 360 and it looked like crap, I let it reset itself and it chose 720p automatically. Much clearer, but anyway - I was just wondering if the PS3 has the auto function. Brother in law has one and all of his games look like crap (I think he is forcing 1080i or p).
