What do you define as petty crime? Because torturing a shoplifter to "make an example" is one of the funniest things I ever heard.

You have to punish the little crimes to make people think twice about commiting the bigger ones. And if that punishment involves torture, so be it. It's unpleasant, no denying that. But it's for the greater good, imagine a clean society, a nice quiet place where the elderly don't have to worry about some lout smashing their windows or where the mentally disturbed aren't driven to suicide by gangs of kids.

Friends Ayman Najafi, 24, and 25-year-old Charlotte Adams were each sentenced to one month in prison followed by deportation and a fine of 1000 dirhams ($296).

 

The British pair was allegedly seen kissing on the mouth in a restaurant, breaching Dubai's strict decency laws.

 

They were also accused of consuming alcohol, a charge to which they pleaded guilty, but said they only kissed on the cheek.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but let me point out that you regularly chime in with assertions that are either ignorant, or not well crafted.

I can see from the writing of others in these threads that many may miss these fine distinctions; those that do not yet possess or are still honing their skills in critical thinking. I only point this out in example.
