Please Help! Black Lines In Gta IV

This my first post here so please be patient with me for my less then satisfactory spelling and the fact i havn't got my head round this bb code stuff yet.

 

I'm a big fan of GTA. I have all the 3D GTA's that came in a PC version. I haven't had that many problems with IV but this one is giving me a real headache (literally). I know its most likely my video card causing the problem. Signs and cars have these weird black line on them that move as you get closer until they dissapear when you are really close. They way they kind of move and spin is really giving me a sore head. I'll try and upload the pictures somewhere so you can get a good look at the problem. They will be in PDF if thats ok. If anyone can get back to me soon i'd really apreciate it. Also, i have a toshiba notebook so the ati drivers of their website don't work. Some people had a similar problem with ati cards and that was fixed with catalyst 10.3. Toshiba dont have those drivers for my model. I have a ati mobility raedon 3000 and something. If anyone thinks drivers are the problem please give me a link or url to a site where they can be downloaded. My not-so-detailed specs are: Toshiba satelite a300 1bz with a ati mobility raedon 3420 (i think, CCC didn't install corectly and wont launch so i cant guarantee). I did a complete uninstall of all ati drivers with driver sweeper before deleting the two ati folders at C:\progfiles and the one at C:\. Because of the nature of the prob i dont have an error code. I'm using the official retial russian version my friend got me abroad. Obviously it has an english launguage pack installed. I have version 1.0.0.4/1.0.5.0. I use vista for gaming as seven causes real bad lag.

I'm guessing you're running the game on bare minimum and this issue may be arising from low shadow quality and/or reflection resolution.

Lovely, I know its not a gaming machine but so what? it runs the game fine on MEDIUM settings WITHOUT lag. I may only get 10 to 15 FPS but its better than nothing. I'm real atatched to it know (i know its sad but...). Also, your link to the specs of my laptop are wrong IT DOES NOT GET 0.0 HRS BATTERY LIFE. And back to your suggestion about shadows, I put them on on low and they looked real bad, then on medium they looked real bad, then on high they started to cause stuttering so i turned them OFF. I appreciate your swift reply as you probably have better things on. All i'm really asking for is a fix. I'm gonna buy myself an xbox at christmas (sad again... but whatever) but untill then i wanna get this fixed. Also, all that lovely information at the overclocking website was TOTALY USELESS to me as I DONT UNDERSTAND A WORD OFF IT!!! I WILL NEVER ADMIT DEFEAT SO DON'T TELL ME IT CAN'T BE FIXED, JUST SAY YOU DON'T KNOW HOW BUT NVER SAY ANYTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE (except microsoft making a totally flawless OS). IM VERY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT FINDING A FIX FOR THIS!!!

 

So my shadows are off, I have probably mis-took what you said but... I also put on the blur mode by pressing p but it made no difference. If anyone has any more suggestions please feel free. I tried posting some pics in a .rar format to megaupload but i keep getting an error. i'll keep trying though...

Also, its a MOBILITY RAEDON 3420 with 128mb memory. Maybe I'm being nieve thinking I'll get perfect gaming on this card. But its worked fine so far except for this. I can get 100% maxed out settings on SA with no probs and no lag and IV (like I Say) med settings with no lag and only this prob.

You're expecting too much from that hardware.GTAIV needs load of VRAM and you don't have much. 128MB is really really low for GTAIV. You can try using memrestrict as suggested in the pinned topic, but generally it's hard to troubleshoot with hardware that doesn't meet the specification.

Hi there, yeh i know. anyhow... here is my comandline. I was surprised after all the reviews on you tube having that real bad no textures problem on decent cards (well they had enough Vram anyway) that i didn't. i couldn't get higher than 1280x720 and my native was 1280x800. I also couldn't get very good veiw distance (about 20). my resource usage was dark red but the game still wrked fine with only the odd lamp post popping up in the middle of no-where. I didn't notice this problem at the time as i was thinking about how to fix the bins comming out of nowhere and the odd road missing problem. When i put in my commandline i noticed the lines problem. I took out the commandline and saw it was still there (i just missed it before) so i did a clean re-install with no commandline and it was still there.

 

And like i say its only temporary till i get the xbox.

 

Do you want a copy of my commandline, even though its probably not doing anything. The game doesn't stutter but i just but the res back down to 1280x720 to fix the lag when i wen't into water.

 

This really is the only problem with it so i was rather shocked.

I tried the merestrict one too, it still didn't fix the problem. I worked out what it is now, the cars in the distance have no textures and they appear as you get closer.
