jclewis
HI guys do you all know any good free antivirus software than can speed up performance4? I have avg .. but that isnt stopping these viruses from slowing game down and my internet explorer still goes to random porn sites
Ryan
AVG and Kaspersky are pretty good. I've used AVG for 5 years now and it's never let me down. Not sure what happened with you. Reinstalling Windows is always a last resort if you can't remove it. It might not be a virus that is slowing down your PC. What are your system specs? radioman
Norton Internet Security 2010 does a great job at blocking viruses on my Windows 7 laptop, and McAfee Internet Security does a good job on my Vista desktop. These both do great jobs at blocking Viruses from reaching the desktop. Just a heads up. And if you have cable internet, like I do, McAfee is FREE. viometrix
both norton and mcaffee are notorious resource hogs. i use microsoft security essentials and common sense.... i dont get viruses
joshuazh
i have norton, and cpu usage is at 0% unless it uses something else? of course, im always using 2.3 gb of ram
viometrix
it takes up your ram, and if you just montior usage it shows 0%, but every program you open, file you move etc, it scans every part of everything along with files and programs running. and compared to many anti virus out there they are overly intrusive. mkey82
Mind you, there are many malwares you there various AV software just can't remove. You'll have to identify and remove it manually.

heat84
Mind you, there are many malwares you there various AV software just can't remove. You'll have to identify and remove it manually. That's what Malwarebytes is for. I don't even us an anti-virus program myself. I'm just real careful about what I download and run a Malwarebytes scan periodically. But I do get bit once in a blue moon.
GTA3Freak-2001
Even if you use Malwarebytes you still may not fix it all, your best bet is to seek help from one of the many tech forums which offer malware/spyware removal. I've used them to clean many a relative's infected system. BleepingComputers is one I've used and you just give them a HijackThis log and they analyse it for you and give you step by step instructions. Of course the best solution is not letting your system get infected in the first place!

mkey82
your best bet is to seek help from one of the many tech forums which offer malware/spyware removal. Nah, your best bet is to steer clear off various porn/warez/whatnot sites. * don't install various sh*t * don't open/run various odd archive's content * don't open attachments coming from various unknown sources * don't install odd codecs, players, games found all over the web * don't use Internet sodding Explorer, keep your system up to date with critical security updates, backup all of your sh*t, this can't be stressed enough * when a movie asks you to go to some odd site and get sh*t from there, don't * when you dl some archive and it asks you to go to some odd site and look for a password there, don't * when people post links to some software that supposedly fixes all of the worlds ailments, don't download and especially do not run it * don't plug in odd USB keys into your machine * don't plug your USB key into odd machines I'm running two PCs (one XP the other 7) connected via broadband to the net at all times without any AV of FW installed with windows crapware of that sorts disabled, UAC off. I have had one infection in two years only because I was stupid enough to run some odd installer. I knew what I was doing (something very stupid) but I did it anyway and my system got messed up. Also, with major infections general AV software is useless. It will not prevent you from installing it nor will it will be able to remove it. More likely, malware will disable your AV software. At the same time, with properly backed up stuff it's a lot better (less time consuming and more stable) to install your OS from scratch then it is to run amok all over the web looking for a fix and then apply it to your system as there will always be consequences. By far the best AV software out there is free, there are no initial nor monthly fees, but it does require to be updated all the time. And you have to use it for it to work. I agree with most of what you said, except the guy already has an infection which means your advice won't help him with his current problem ... So, with that in mind, which free program are you recommending he run?
mkey82
I would recommend any of the free online scanners, those hurt your system performance the least. McAfee, Kaspery, BitDefender, they all offer the service. But like I said, it's best (sometimes the only possible) solution to look up the problem manually on the web by referencing the issue at hand. Like, if "Antivirus XP 2008" opens up a window prompting you for something, you would do a Google search for "Antivirus XP 2008 removal".
viometrix
i agree with mkey82.... but also in cases like this when an infection is present with a somewhat uneducated computer user, instead of poking around trying to remove an infection that may cause more damage than good, it may be better to just back up the main user folder preserving many things and most if not all personal files and reformat. so far microsoft security essentails proves to be as good as any antivirus out there, its free. but still you have to excersize caution and common sense on the internet. it is the only solution. That_Guy28
One thing that I know by experience, if you have a virus on there already, it doesn't matter HOW good your anti virus software is, IT WON'T COME OFF YOUR COMPUTER!!!! Some very crapy viruses will come off but 95% of the time the only way to get a virus off there is to reinstall Windows. I'm not saying that anti virus software is a waste of money. Anti virus software will help keep the virus from installing but once you get a virus that has done damage to your Windows files and/or made your computer slow the only way to get it back to normal is to reinstall Windows. veloceGT
NOD32 is pretty good, came in this huge box and I was expecting it to take 20mins to install but it was like a tiny web program and I was floored at how light it was. Pretty damn quick and it's not a resource hog. I barely notice its running. Anyways if you want something free I just recommend Super Anti Spyware or Malware Bytes + Some kind of firewall (not windows!)
Hydro_PT
I use AGV, along with Windows Firewall (can't be bother to install another firewall) and Ad-Aware. I also update and scan my PC with Spybot Search & Destroy once in a week. So far I have had no problems at all, been using this method for the last 3 years maybe, and all is fine. Before I used McAfee, but that thing ate many resources and it wasn't very reliable. Also, a bit of common sense is vital to keep you protected. If you keep visiting weird sites and downloading/installing things you don't know what they are or where they come from, then you have a big change of getting infected. And once you are, the best option is to format the disk and reinstall your OS. A format cleans everything, no virus or malware can survive. TruXter
I wouldn't use ccleaner even if it would swear to make avg worth a dang. CCLeaner = garbage AVG= garbage Avast = Garbage Kasperskey= garbage nod32 = garbage A squared free= good Malware bites = excellent Super Anti Spyware (stupid name cheesy site looks like "stop sign") root kit finder a squared Hijack Free, is like HJT. Not much online support not for newbs = good MVPS Hosts does a ton more than just block advertisements. Blocks many many bad websites and servers. and a once a month some times once a week scan from bitdefender online free scan. it removes stuff for free. I do not run an anti virus. To me it's like wearing 700 lbs of armor so i can feel safe.. meanwhile 50% of viruses will attache themselves to your antivirus so it can't be removed by the antivirus.
