macorules94
In IV when crashing into a car in the back, the back of the car you crashed into is really good crash timing. But then the front of your car isn't really that crashed. And don't get me started on crashing into cars on the side. All it does is some scratches. I expect to see things like this: Edited March 31, 2010 by macorules94
King Of Monra
You mean things like this? But I do agree, there should be more damage when you crash hard.
macorules94
When I'm speeding down a highway, and I crash into a car coming from another road, I expect ^^ that damage on both cars. Not just one lil scratch
Mark
You'd have to compromise on the driveability of vehicles though. Having a perfectly handling completely wrecked vehicle would be even more wrong than hard as nails cars, in my opinion. If you expect to be able to see a car driven into a concrete wall at 40mph to look like a wreck, you're pretty much gonna have to expect it to run like a wreck. Or not even run at all for that matter. That'll get boring quickly. Maybe a 2-tier setting?
ikt
It's possible, but it's not fun anymore for casual players. I have once made a personal handling mod that wrecks all cars evenly. They don't drive after the initial impact. Vid here: But still isn't satisfying as other games.
The_Mario_Man
It would be cool, but you'd have to sacrifice the ability to drive a lot of these things. I'll bet none of the cars in your examples will ever be driven again. It would have to be the same way in-game, meaning you probably won't be able to plow through oncoming with trucks for as long. But if you're a competent driver it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
K^2
Burnout Paradise has very nice crash physics, but it only has several cars that it processes with that quality at any one time, so I don't know how well this would run in GTA. There is also a matter of car chases becoming very short for most people if crash physics becomes more realistic. I think I'd be happy with it, but there will be a lot of people complaining. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.
The_Mario_Man
Well, crashing is basically the core mechanic of the Burnout games, so it pretty much has to be done well. Plus once a crash is over your car just gets reset, so they're allowed to do more visual damage. It would be nice if damage affected the player more. I recall at one time rolling a car over, and the dent in the roof ended up clipping half-way through Niko's head.
Dear x Sergio
I completely agree with the OP. The destruction of the cars in IV was so pedestrian; you'd have to do the swing-set glitch 3 times to get the damage you would get from a two-car wreck. The wrecks in IV aren't satisfying at all. What's this nonsense about it getting boring with real destruction? It's more lame to realize that your car should be useless after a crash and continue on with it than having it actually be destroyed.
paul
Maybe this would stop players from crashing in every corner. I like this idea
SmC12
Remember it's a game and although the went for the realistic approach, they can't make everything real or else it takes away the purpose of it being a game. If you crashed into a car while speeding down the highway in your Infernus and accidentally lost control and ended up like the picture posted by Piperka (the bottom one) you would be frustrated every time you crashed your car because the physics would be too realistic. The fact that you can drive head on to another car at about 50 mph and get away with 1 or 2 scratches makes the game what GTA is, it's not a driving simulator, it's GTA (a game different from many other games that are trying to be too realistic, NFS for example) so people who didn't use cheats would have to drive all the way to a Pay 'n' Spray everytime they crashed because their car would be smoking and the wheels would be falling off etc. I think GTA IV's car physics are just right for the type of game it is. Algonquin Bridge
There's always a delicate balance between realism and playability. Implementing these crash physics would tip it too far in favour of realism. Remember, it's just a game. Not a simulator.

Mute Giant
As some have pointed out, vehicle destruction have to be ajusted to playability. Smaller collitions should not do much to your car, but when it comes to extremes, like when you hit a truck front to front on the highway or the car fall from a tall bridge, the vehicle should be smashed up real bad, just like in those photoes. Another element I want to see introduced to the crash-physics is the ability to smash a vehicle into pieces. Like if something hit the top of your car the roof will come of. Or if you drive a heavy vehicle real fast and hit a the side of a bus, you drive right through it leaving it in two pieces. Also if a vehicle explodes i'd like to see it seperated sometimes
Hove Beach
It's great in IV, so please don't squeak. It's good that they doesn't push it too far in my meaning...
New Liberty State
The only thing I hated about crashes in IV was the lack of SRS Airbags on modern cars. And Niko´s head sticks out his head out of a crushed Landstalker roof wtf? lol And car explosion sometimes get annoying after a time, Why not in rear end crashes, the car could ignite on fire and *insert protagonist name here* die from the burns and smoke inhalation? Really I hope the next game have this 3 features implemented (one is a bug fix) Edited April 1, 2010 by New Liberty State
SmC12
Actually, since i downloaded BoGT i have noticed that sometimes random car crashes on the streets result in the car catching fire and exploding. I have been seeing more of this recently and thought it was a nice little addition to the game. I was once speeding down the highway in Algonquin and crashed into the back of a taxi, the taxi caught fire and after a while it exploded, whithout any weapons being used whatsoever. Wolfmight
well one thing is for sure. They need an optional seatbelt you can choose to put on. maybe set it to auto or manual in the cellphone lol, but it takes an extra second to put on each time and saves you from flying out the window. Airbags is also a good idea for some new cars. I always think it's hilarious how the grenades affect cars in GTAIV sometimes, squeezing a tire halfway towards the middle and still working. The definitely need to bring back the Rhino omg. I missed it so much in GTAIV. The annihilator can't wreck cars worth sh111. I was replying to this in my last post: Why not in rear end crashes, the car could ignite on fire and *insert protagonist name here* die from the burns and smoke inhalation? In GTA IV it was extremely rare for an NPC's car to catch fire by crashing into it, but in BoGT this doesn't just happen when the player crashes into a car, it also happens with random AI crashes as well, so what i'm saying is that BoGT was an improvement on these features which means they will probably improve them in V as well. DjMiikkii
You also have to realize that any more realism in damage and the car would not be drivable!
