edgepotato
So recently I had upgraded my PC to a AMD Phenom II X4 965 and in an unfortunate turn of events I haven't met the performance I was expecting. Basically I'm making this topic because I've already taken the liberty of consistently upgrading my PC with various new pieces of hardware just to get GTA IV working perfectly and at this point In time I figure it'd be appropriate to ask the people who actually play the game, rather then those who sell computer parts, for advice. My current system specs are as follows - Motherboard - AMD 790GX Video Card - Radeon 4890 HD 1GB Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.39 GHz Performance Rated at: 7.6275 GHz at system requirements lab, I'm assuming that's normal) Ram - 4 GB (DDR 2, I think) OS - Vista 32bit Monitor - 22 Inch, (Resolution Max, which is like 1650 x 1150 or something like that ) Basically I run the game on Medium through and through but need to turn off "Definition" and put "View Distance" and "Detail Distance" down to like 10 - 12 each. Otherwise I'm bombarded with constant microstudder and choppy frame rate, which is still existent even on my questionably pathetic settings. Essentially my question is, what should I do next? I figure I might as well upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit just so I don't only have 3.2 Gig's of my ram measured (Or what ever Vista 32 bit can pick up), but I'd rather not jump to conclusions On what to upgrade, so what do you guys think? It's also worth mentioning that I have in fact reinstalled windows when I got my new processor, I had done it about a month before when I got the new motherboard so I didn't have all that much stuff to worry about reinstalling so I figured I'd just fresh boot windows again just to get the best possible performance. I would like to thank anyone who read my wall of text and appreciate all of your help in advance, thank you.
viometrix
well your first problem is you are running 5 gb of total ram, but use an os that only sees 3.5 gb ram, so you first need too get a 64bit os. second your bios is probably set wrong, on amd chipsets that can have a profound effect even more so than intel chipsets. so please upload a bios template and ill tell you what to change, and get windows 7 x64. with those 2 things you should be good to go. (and if im correct your 32 win 7 key will allow you to install it in 64 bit, but i could be wrong) if you have to buy a new one get an oem copy and save a boat load of money. also to note i am a gamer and a tech. if you have any problems after these two things there are others here better with the game settings and tricks. edgepotato
How does one go about getting a "Bios Template"? It's notable that when I was at my local computer store I was there with the buddy that installed it (The Processor) and he went on the AMD website and got the newest BIOS support for my Processor, so I dunno if that randomly had a profound effect on the motherboard or not. GTA3Freak-2001
Something isn't right if you get the issues you mention, just look at my specs(in my sig) and know that with vanilla GTA IV I get quite playable above 30 frame rates most of the time. No microstutter but I did have it majorily when I played it in unpatched form, are you running the game patched at all? I had no trouble once I installed the 3rd patch and up. Astrixone
I can give you a help Download CPU-Z and check if you use all of your 4 cores. If it says 2 than the other 2 are disabled in BIOS. I had that problem and as soon as i solved it i could feel the difference. I got the II X4 955 so its not that different from your CPU. edgepotato
I downloaded and ran CPU-Z and It says I have 4 Cores running. It's also nice because it showed me that the rest of my hardware is running appropriately which makes this little issue I'm having that much more interesting, if you ask me. As well, I am currently up to date in terms of patches. The windows live thing lets me sign in and play without a hitch in regards to it harassing me about updating. GTA3Freak and Astrixone, if you don't mind my asking what Operating Systems do you guys have? Because if you both happen to have 64 bit versions of Windows then I'll be pretty much sold on the need to upgrade asap. If not then I guess I have some software issues to deal with. (I sincerely hope that its not the later)
